For me, it has to be the Shinobi series. Excluding that piece of crap Shinobi for the PS2. The music in Shinobi, II, and III for the Arcade/Genesis were so memorable, catchy, and just awesome. Some of my favorites are the 1st level in III, and the waterfall level in II.

Shining Force III had some great music.

Suikoden III had an awesome opening theme song. Thank god it wasn't J-pop.

SFIII:3rd Strike. I really love the hip-hop opening theme.

Sonic Adventure. Every single music in this game are just awesome.

Sagat's, Bison's, and Ryu's theme songs in SFII are great.

I have many more. But, these will do for now. How about you guys?

chronotrigger is freaking great too, all that music rocks on that game.
super load runner for the Famicom disk, Y? it's extremley catchy and get's stuck in my head everytime i play it!
FinalFAntasy series, ESPECIALLY VII casue it's my fav FF of all time.
castlevania 1,2 for the Famicom disk, and the japanese version of 3, the music on it is quite a bit superiour to the NES versions, and still freakin' Awesome!

You're right, as most of the other "songs" in this game were of the atmospheric kind. The music in that stage is AMAZING. Too bad it hasn't been used as much as some other music in the series. The castle entrance song in SotN is another fantastic opener.

Never have I heard such a thrilling soundtrack from a shmup, especially with all the generic techno stuff I've been hearing in them lately (I.E., all of Caves shmups...). It has a rich blend of jazz to a few of the tracks as well. An extremely well done sound track, great game too BTW.
