Wow, That artwork looks real good. Has this been posted? If it has I'll delete this thread.

thats no proto.
its a sample cartridge that was sent to stores for previewing purposes.

similar ones were released for romancing saga 3 and seiken densetsu 3.(i just own the latter)

rare, but not one of a kind.

I believe this Chrono Trigger cart play only up untill the Dino Laier and that stuff is different and left out compared with the final.

the first few sold for insane ammounts but I think its settled down now. As the above poster said its more a store demo cart than a proto.

I kindof wish for a translation of this, too bad it hasn't happened.

It's a demo with 4 playable sections:
New Game until Frog joins
The Trial
Factory Ruins
Magus Castle first section

It was available a few months before CT released, and is based on a beta version. If you use Pro Action Replay codes you can access a lot of things that got cut in the final game - 3 dungeons (Singing Mountain, Zeal, Forest Ruins), a hovercraft version of the Epoch, remixes of several songs, some different enemies, and a bunch of other stuff.

Yeah, I've been looking for one of those ever since I saw one guy wanting $800 for his (which was roughly 2 years ago). I like RPGs, and I've been keeping track of these whenever they pop up on eBay... Saw one on Yahoo Japan go for about $320 US once, it had some sort of prismatic cards with it. That was the most I'd ever seen one actually sell for.

the going rate for these on YJ is around $70-$100.
iirc i got my sd3 mint in box for $30, but that was 2 years ago.
by the time american and european bidders became aware of these samples, prices began to rise on YJ aswell.

theres another japanese chrono trigger out there, the shounen jump version.
from what i've heard, its even rarer than the sample, but dont take my word for it.

What about the real prototype of Secret of Mana, which sold on Ebay last week:

Does anybody know anything about that? Secret of Mana is easily one of Squares best games, and it is definitely one of the best RPGs on the SNES.
