Found one at a thrift store boxed for $15, is this worth buying?

I would say yes but not exclusively as a gaming machine. It's a very interesting and fun computer, though.

(/waits patiently for Altairboy, the resident ST guru, to chime in...)

That price seems very good to me, especially if it is new in the box with all the accessories. I think the STe includes both an internal floppy drive and an RF video output, so that would be a couple of headaches you would avoid with this particular model (other models require special monitors or a separate external disk drive). However, the STe came out later in the life cycle of the ST line; as such, it includes some additional hardware and a newer OS which may make it incompatible with some older software. On the other hand, there is some newer software which requires (or is enhanced for) the STe. I've read the STe uses a different type of controller port (the older STs had the same ports as the 6502-based Atari computers and the 2600).

If I saw one in decent condition for that price, I'd probably pick it up. But I was an owner of a 520 ST back during its heyday.

If it's got the same cartridge slot as the earlier ST models, then it is a different type of slot that is not compatible with the older 6502-based Atari computers. I don't remember it being used much for software delivery anyway, mostly it was for hardware add-ons. Software was distributed mainly on 3.5" floppies.

If you buy it and don't want it, I'll buy it off of you :) I still need one of those.

I have an 1040STe,
and the Steinberg Synth Works is on cart (& disk)
Remember, the ST is BEST for midi (Fatboy Slim and such are still using it).
Go for it, and make some noizzzee!!
