Revolution's Big Secret
Miyamoto says there's still more to show.
by Matt Casamassina
December 2, 2005 - Nintendo bigwigs including Shigeru Miyamoto spoke at Japan's Digital Interactive Entertainment Conference today and while no specifics on games or hardware were revealed, some intriguing Revolution gossip was spun all the same, according to the website kotaku.com.

The site reports that Miyamoto again talked about the possibilities of the Revolution controller, and referred to the peripheral's nunchuck-style analog add-on. Most interesting, though, was what Miyamoto didn't talk about. The Nintendo legend flat-out stated that there's more to be revealed about the Revolution controller.
"There's another secret [about the Revolution controller]," he stated. "But I'm not going to go into that here. That'll be for a later date."

The news is in line with Nintendo of Europe demi-god Jim Merrick's recent statements that not everything about the Revolution controller has been shown.

Readers can expect full disclosure on the peripheral, the console, and its games at the Electronics Entertainment Expo 2006, which kicks off in Los Angeles next May.

i'm kinda bored of all the hint dropping and teasing but Nintendo really needs to tease the public and get them anticipating. Their US console sales are crap compared to Microsoft and Sony so they NEED the public to get interested in the system. Its like a slow striptease, keep the people mentally aroused until the final peice of clothing is gone. Right now Nintendo seems to have begun to take off the first long black satin glove.

thats some wierd mental pics their dj. But my favorite peace of info is what he said in this month issue of game informer (i balieve) that the controller is the main accesory, and that any add on would be really cheaply made so they can add them in with games. This means if needed each game can have a totally different controller. This sound really cool to me. :D

My question is:

Will this thing work at all with a HDTV?

Does it work like a light gun? Not one of my lightguns works with my HDTV. Is this controller going to, or is it all internal tilting sensors coupled with wireless tech?

Miyamoto's gonna come out and say "You don't need to plug it into the console!" and everybody's gonna be like "what"

This is exactly what i was afraid they were going to do.

I must admit i feel better knowing they would (possbly) include it in with the games...but the possibility of having a truckload of various add-ons just to play games frightens and angers me.

Yup. Can anyone here name one controller add on that did something specific that more than a few games for a system took advantage of? Hell, even the Zapper for the NES which had TONS manufactured was used in like 10 games.

I was excited about the Revolution when I thought it would be the cheap man's game system, and the Revolution would be about cost. A $100 new system with $20-30 games. Now, knowing that if I ever get one I'll be flailing around to play...

Wel, my next console purchase will definitely be an Xbox 360, probably in about 2009.

now that games are more mainstream i think that putting your cards on the table and letting media attention sell your stuff for you does more, i.e halo 2 or GTA. the frenzy for twilight princess reached new heights after the E3 demo was released it's just common sense that hardware is the same.

360 is already out and sony has a shindig coming up in January, can nintendo really wait for E3 to show the goods and share the stage with twilight?

Ed Oscuro

Hell, even the Zapper for the NES which had TONS manufactured was used in like 10 games.
The Zapper isn't contained in the actual dogbone controller itself, though.

Just think about that.

EVERY game can introduce a little lightgun sequence. Lack of market penetration will not be an issue with this device.

Oh, and on that count...NES lightgun games? Lots of 'em. 16 unique zapper games show up in the DP game list, and that's not including hybrid titles like Bayou Billy. Most of these likely have Zapper support. 17 unique titles show up for the SMS, actually (one's Dynamite Duke, though, not quite sure how that works), and again, most probably use the SMS lightgun.

First off, sure I'm being quick to judge. But I know what I like, and that controller is definitely not something that I like. And it never will be.

Sorry Nintendo fans. I'll glow about my DS for a while still, I'll have a lot of fun playing my GameCube, which is my most played system at the moment. But I don't think I will have any interest in the Revolution, completely because of the controller.

I'm not necessarily saying lightgun sequences are what I want to have happen with this thing. But even if it was 16 light gun games, there were how many games released for the NES? That becomes what... 2% of the titles for the system? (The NES has around 800 games, right?)

My biggest concern is just that they'll FORCE everything to use some freaky thing that doesn't work very well for EVERY one of my games.

Sound like the DS Stylus? That's exactly what I'm talking about. Wario Touched was bording on great and horrible at the same time. The fact that you can beat an entire stage by blowing one long constant breath into the mic is lame, and so is having NO minigames that use ANY controller or buttons.

And that's what I forsee happening with the revolution. 50 games that all feel like a demo of "look what our controller can do" and charging full price for every one of them.

!!Then!! They'll re-release thousnads of games with updated controller support and charge double price for THEM too.

yes sylentwulf NINTENDO IS GOIN TO release thousands of games... (psx) I can't tell where the sarcasm from multiplex gamers (if I may coin a term) begins and where it doesn't. Its like as if you've reached into a bag of random worries and grabbed a huge squishy handfull (like gummy worms) and are now swinging your arm around like a helicopter and they're flying all over the place. A few other posts I've seen too!

Well Nintendo WON't F*ck up because the other companies are doomed to mediocrity (at least in the sense of gaming that doesn't evolve extra dimensionally) and I feel sorry for the people who won't enjoy new Nintendo games and who can only (bitch) basically Nintendo makes games for people who deserve to enjoy them, and you only understand it if you deserve too so props because someones in a blunt mood today. :evil laugh:

2600 Paddle controllers, but they are probably the exception. You could argue the addition of the Dual Shock to the PSX as well...

I dunno, both Sony and Nintendo haven't really shown much yet. But Nintendo obviously has more to prove. And 360 isn't quite there yet. So it's wait and see then hope for price drops for me...

Aren't you being a little quick to judge? We don't know much about either ps3 or revolution yet...
I am basing my judgement on:
1) how screwed over i felt by n64's piss ass games and completely shitty controller. (If anyone can explain the REASON WHY THERE IS THREE PRONGS, i will give you all my meseta. I don't want an explanation of how to use it. I want to know why it fucking exists.)
2) How dissapointed I am by the lack of good games on the gamecube, and the dissapointing controller. Ever since I did a small modification to the cube controllers by replacing the yellow sticks with grey ones, life has been better , as i no longer become angered by just looking at the controller....but still. The hole in the centre of wired controllers is a bit uncomfortable and the wired controller gives off a rickety feeling .Yay for wavebirds... I've upped my cube time quite a bit with modded wavebirds.
3) The absolutely wonky DS controls(stylus? um no thanks vladimir. In soviet russia, the DS sucks you.) And dissapointing lack of titles that interest me. I'll admit that the ds games are "unique" and "innovative" BUT I DO NOT WANT TO PLAY THEM. 3 titles worth my money on ds i see...2 currently on the market.... CV and Nanostray....

3 strikes, N, and you're slowly unveiling another wonky system with a fucked up, nonsensical controller. Yer' OUT!

I don't know who I will go with as my flagship this generation, but it sure as hell won't be nintendo.

Whoa, mayday, mayday, fanboy alert!

Normally I don't respond to people that start flipping out and going ballistic, but I'm assuming you read me wrong. The "thousands of games" was an exageration that I thought was fairly obvious. But tell me that you don't see them re-releaseing tons of their classics (ala gba) with "updated support" with said controller, and charging more than they do for their standard classic games they plan on allowing for download.

Thanx for focusing on that one part of my post and completely ignoring the rest of 100% valid concerns with nintendos new system that I mentioned though. I'm sure NOONE complained about the early DS games being very "demo like" and charging full price for very short and simplistic games.

Thank god you told me the other systems were doomed to failure though, I almost was going to consider buying one of them. Now I know I should just buy the revolution because it will be the Rox0rz.

let me make this point. dont judge to quick even if you "know what you like". Considering how the nintendo ds turned out to be a great handheld after everyone was making jokes about it and saying it would be a flop. Although the revolution may be the biggest risk nintedo has taken it might surprise us all again and show why nintendo has lasted so long (or it could possibly flop).

I say stay neutral and wait for it to come out before deciding

HELL NO I didn't read any of his posts at all. Only the fist line of what was written by him and I thought it was quite funny so I just added it to the beginning of my post that I had already written before I realized he had written anything anyway. Because it exemplified the chracterization that I don't care to explain to him like as he has so needlessly done of me which is obviously in what his entire new post is about.

So there it is, I come here to make an original statement and and throw in a funny odd quote from someone whom I'm only indirectly speaking of, while he comes off as passive aggressive and goes on a tirade qouting someone entirely and directly and can only mirror all he writes based what was written by others in an ill mistaken manner that has no originality.

The original post I've made that he goes on and on about wasn't even about him at all. I JUST THREW IN his HILARIOUS quote about the thousands of games that will be made in the future. So he thought my post was focused all around him. Nows he's gone and quoted my entire post backflipping out nicely like I assumed would be.

And as I did before, I've STILL managed only to read just the very first line of his post (this time I assume it was entirly based on me) But I won't thank him for all the nice attention he's giving me because I don't care about attention not here. So I'll put him on ignore. Moving on.

I tried the DS and i didnt care for its control setup. Granted, I was playing the Metroid game and...well, i'm not a fan of having to use a D-pad to move around in a 3D space....but thats another story.

Now as far as this Revolution....it's not so much about the actual system itself and more about how Nintendo is going to handle/treat the fans with this numerous accessory idea. Sure, none of us know for sure how many accessories Nintendo will make, but nothing in thier video gaming past has made me believe that any of thier "accessories" won't be limited and compatible with a handful of games.

The paddle controllers would be the exception. The Driving / Keyboard / Childrens controllers that were released for it though fell into the usual mold.

I would argue against the Dual Shock, just because Sony started packing them in with the system. Whatever you get in the box when you buy the console is what developers seem to support the most, and when those Dual Shocks started coming, developers changed to that.

Sorry, but that's just not how it works. I'm generally agnostic when it comes to following trends, but yes I do have opinions about what I like to play. And I like controllers that are relatively standard, sorry.

I also was a person who liked the idea of the stylus with the DS. I have a Pocket PC. I'm the guy who constantly bitches that they didn't put Palm OS on it and really make the system into a killer ap without any games.

But how I play games is lying down when I'm relaxing. I rarely point at the TV. And if moving my arms will be a required part of playing a game, I know that I'll be skipping it. Sorry.

That's a good way of putting it. I like that and I've not said anything about the controllers for the next generation except to go out on a limb and say the PS3 "rang" looks esxeptional. Maybe I'll have some criticism to share for nintendo soon too when we at least know what the system is going to even be called.

Shhhhsh What, you're saying no one still jokes about the DS :( Well aww ok heres one.

You with the DS, what's that you say? DS is selling so great is it, oh? Sure, Nintendo knows how to engineer a system that doesn't flop. Just so long as you know they... hehe, keep em designed after a Brick!

I even avoided them for 2 years, until recently I bought one and I can't seem to put it away.
