Regardless of your personal preferences, 2005 is another great year to be a PlayStation 2 owner. In the five years since it first appeared in stores, Sony's gargantuan system has lead the gaming pack like no other console in history. More than 90 million users around the world have hopped onto the PS2 bandwagon, and the number of devotees continues to grow day after day after day.

This year's lineup of games is among the strongest ever. Capcom has set the standard for this season's third party support with two of the best games of the year in Resident Evil 4 and Devil May Cry 3, while Atari, Square Enix, and Namco have fired off some terrific games of their own. Yearly favorites like SmackDown and SOCOM have impressed us as well, while Sony's own first party offerings like God of War and Shadow of the Colossus have helped set new expectations on a system that still has a lot of life left in it.

Don't forget Soul Calibur 3 as well

What blows me away is the amount of RPGs that have been released in the past few months alone.

In the past month or two we've seen;

Digital Devil Saga 2
Dragon Quest VIII
Magna Carta
Makai Kingdom
Radiata Stories
Shining Force Neo
Shining Tears
Stella Deus
Suikoden Tactics
Wild Arms: Alter Code F
...and a few others I'm sure I missed.

I'll still be playing them all by the time next holiday season comes around.

I just got done with a grueling day at Gamestop. I cannot believe how many games the PS2 has that are great to offer. Although on other platforms, Lego Star Wars is sold out and is being asked for alot, as well as Soul Calibur III is sold out too. Rachet and Clank Deadlocked is doing great as well. The system has a shitload to offer.

...that's right, and more are scheduled for the next 6 months: Shadow Hearts From the New World, Wild Arms 4, Suikoden V, Tales of Legendia, Kingdom hearts II, FF 7 Dirge of Cerberus, Atelier Iris 2, Grandia III, .hack GU.

MANY choices, lots of offerings, it is almost too much. The PS2 will end up with around 110 RPgs alone. Amazing to what extent this console dominated the last 5 years. I hope for the players sake and game prices sake that the Xbox 360 (and maybe even the Revolution) will reduce the gap to the PS3.

Exactly what ive been thinking.

Hell for the first time in 20 years im not worried about getting a next gen console :)

It would take AT LEAST 5 years for me to acquire and PLAY all of the great PSone and PS2 games I still have yet to experience.

I share this sentiment but in a broader sense. Like many of us I have all 3 current systems and I haven't plyaed all the great games available. We'll be years into the 360's, PS3's & Revolution's life cycle before I need to get another system.
