Vibration paks have been around for a good long while now, and because
I only just today bought a Rumble pack for my N64 and a pack for my D.C
I was wondering...
What games use this feature to greatest effect?
and
Are there any games that are rendered unplayable "without" force feedback?
I lived with Dual shock for many years (read: Parents system=PS/2) and
nothing really jumped out at me as inovative or integral to gameplay dynamics.

my experience is that every rumble pack just sux, like oooh yeah it vibrates when i fall to ground in DoA2, as if this was spectacular. it doesn't give u a better feel and it isn't realistic in any way, i wouldn't know any game that really needs it or even makes good use of it.
the only good feedback things, are force feedback wheels and joysticks, ever played colin mc rae with force feedback wheel? AWESOME

I think the vibration works best in FPSs. If you're getting pegged from somewhere you feel it and I believe you react a bit quicker.
I also like it in driving games. You get a bit of a feel for how you're taking the corner - if it starts vibrating it's not as smooth as it could be.
In other games it's just there and isn't really integral to how I play. IMO anyway.

Slightly on topic: I don't think it fits for anything. I bought a PSX controller with that rumble feature and thought it was crap. Opened up the gamepad itself and ripped out the vibrating motors first day I had it, haven't missed them since.

I REALLY like it. It helps on driving and FPS games (as mentioned) it also makes some games almost unplayable without it.
A lot of survival horror games give your heart rate/pulse/danger warnings when you are low on health. With no other on screen health meter, you're dead without the vibration.
It's not like you're paying extra for it with the new consoles, they all have it built in, I've never even considered shutting it off in game because I like it :)

Good point SylentWulf: the pulsing when you're low in health is cool too.
Reminded me of the other place it's been used that I enjoy: In Tiger Woods 2003 there are 'game breaker' shots (I forget the real name). The screen narrows to a widescreen format and you hear and feel your heart pulsing. Makes it feel more like a pressure shot that way IMO.

Metal Gear Solid on PlayStation had some very effective vibration feedback in it that was critical to the game.
BTW: Force feedback as in the thread title is not what these controllers have, it's vibration only. FF would require that the sticks be coupled to the actuators and press back against you.

Some games like Metroid Prime (GC) and Zelda uses rumble feature to hint you a secret nearby. But I use the Wavebird and I don't miss the rumble feature.

On my PS2, the vibration function died for player 1 port within a week. The controller works fine, it just won't vibrate. It rumbles when plugged into port 2, but 99 percent of games won't let you play from port 2. Anyone have any suggestions how to fix port 1?

I was going to say it, but you beat me to it. True force feedback would be really cool, in some games such as racing. What we have, with Dual Shock etc., is like attaching a vibrator to your game pad. I find it pretty damn annoying and turn it off almost all the time.
