i for one like thier games

i like apex and the terminator games - the new path of neo looks pretty cool too (havent tried it)

but all in all i think atari has lost alot of .. umph in the games world.

it seems to me like the only games that sell are the OLD classic compilations.

i took a look at the companies financials and this year each quater was bad except for this last one.

what is it about atari games that people dont like OR do people actualy like atari games and they just have bad management.

i never hear anyone talking about this or that game by atari (except for the OLD classic compilations and most recently the new path of neo game)

do you guys feel that atari will go the way of 3do? Or does it look like they are bounceing back with a vengence ?

I remember when the jaguar came out and some of the games looked 8 bit. From there I said good bye to atari.

That's a hard question to answer because Atari is just really a name that gets passed around more than a joint at a Phish concert. If the original company was still intact then that would be one thing. Whenever I see the Atari name on a game now, I just roll my eyes (that's not Atari!). Atari ceased to be Atari IMHO when Jack Tramiel got his hands on it.

But I liked the stuff they made back in the good ole' days. I get frustrated thinking about Atari because I feel like it could have been so much better. If the powers that were knew how to run a game company, all of those great Activision games would have been great first party games because those guys never would have left. Certainly Atari could have done a lot of things differently, but they were blazing the trail so they had no one else's experience to learn from. A lockout chip on the Atari would have done wonders for the company, but how were they to know? Nintendo learned from Atari's mistake.

But I digress...

Well the "Real" Atari I liked alot, though they didn't take enough risks in the marketplace with their equipment and had very poor marketing.

Now that Infogrames is Atari, I don't really like them as a company. Its just a company trying to use a name that people know. I guess it could be worse, EA could have bought the Atari name.

The real Atari died in mid-1984. After that, it was just plain pathetic. The above post says it perfectly well in the first few sentences.

The "old" Atari did: Arcade Games (TEMPEST!!), the Atari 2600, The Atari 5200, and the computer lines. Maybe they stretched themselves too thin.

so you guys think atari will continue on the same road they have been on - mediocre rep and sales ?

does anyone have a feeling they will gain any respect ?

does anyone know if they have any "new" games in development - games not based on movies

This actually is a very, very slight pet peeve of mine...people congratulating Publisher X for a job well done. "Activision listened to the users and improved Tenchu a lot!"

I also liked the "Real" Atari back in the day, some of the early Infogrames/Atari games were good, then it seems as of the last 2 or so years they've fade'd away IMO.

Remember "In House of Melburn"? or whatever they were? Really good racers!

I'll leave it at that

You're right. Californian Atari went bankrupt circa 1995. I call that "losing". LOL So that company is DEAD.

The company calling itself "atari" today is not atari - It is Infogrames - French.

Sega has lost a lot of "umph" too but at least the company is still alive!

Atari never went bankrupt.

Atari Corp. was sold in the mid 90's to JTS, but it didn't go bankrupt.

"Remember "In House of Melburn"? or whatever they were? Really good racers!"

What are you talking about? In House of Melburn? Do you mean Melbourne House, the developer of such Infogrames titles as Test Drive Le Mans?

"Well the "Real" Atari I liked alot, though they didn't take enough risks in the marketplace with their equipment and had very poor marketing."

Care to explain the poor marketing comment? Atari advertised heavily in the early 80's with a lot of great tv and print ads. Atari's marketing was great if you ask me up until the launch of the 7800 and such during the second half of the 1980's.

I personally see Atari gaining ground, Infogrames has a lot of captiol behind them and look at where Atari is now as opposed to five years ago, they have a lot more games coming out.

i don't know about infogrames

if you look at the insider transactions (stocks) infrogames keeps buying and selling stock making it look bad

I think of Atari as the company that made the 2600.

But i know that the name "Atari" that is used today is just a name and probably used simply because its supposed to "remind" people of some type of past heritage.

Not that Infogrames is some kind of upstart company...they've been around awhile too.

For what it's worth, I really liked the recent Godzilla games. But yeah, it's just a nostalgia kick nowadays. Atari has been dead for years. We just still like to fondle the corpse. ;)

However, I do thank Infogrames for those shiny Atari stickers they put into some of their games; I've got one on my DS,and I just love the confused looks on some people's faces.
