I am involved in planning a video game tournament at my University. I wanted some suggestions for games. So far we have done tournaments for Halo 2, Smash Bros. Melee, and Mario Power Tennis.
Thanks.

DOA3/Ultimate, TEKKEN 5, Virtua Fighter 4 Evo. Pretty much any fighting game is a great choice for tourny play.
DOA is for Everyone. It's easy to learn and amazingly fun to play.
Tekken is for Button mashers and mid-level fighters
Virtua Fighter 4 EVO is the pinnacle of fighting games and takes a true master to throughly enjoy.
If you want to go old school then i suggest you do things proper with a Baseball Stars tourny. God that would be a blast.

F-Zero, for the love of God! Seems you've got some GC stuff in there anyway. If you don't have F-Zero, then Extreme-G should suffice.

Yeah, I would add in Mario Kart Double Dash. Since you have some GC stuff in the mix already.

If you've got the hardware, then kick it old school and do some Atari 2600 Warlords. Seriously. You'd be surprised how heated and a four-player Warlords match can get. Additionally, it would be nice for you to throw a game in there that basically anybody - not just the hardcore gamers - can pick up and start playing without the need for a steep learning curb a la Halo.

Super Monkey Ball 1 & 2(minigames monkey fight, monkey race, monkey dogfight, monkey target to name a few)are AWSOME FOR TOURNEYS. It is great for anyone, as I have ran several tourneys and it is always a hit.

You're so way off it's not even funny.
High level players in any fighting game are going to kick the ass of anyone who sucks. The only difference is how much broken shit there's gonna be in the game for them to win with. To this end, DOA is no good for tourneys(though I can't speak on the new one). On the reverse of the spectrum, VF4 is good, assuming anyone actually enters.
I mean, if you want people to actually enter the tourney, you have to pick and choose. Personally I'd consider the following:
Street Fighter 2 Turbo
F-zero GX
Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike
Guilty Gear XX #Reloaded
Mario Kart(personally I prefer 64)
Starfox Assault

Oh i'm so not in the mood to get into this arguement again.
DOA IS NOT BROKEN. Yes the reversals and enviroment moves are very powerful, HOWEVER a skilled player varies their moves enough that they don't get caught in a common reversal by a novice (DOA3's reversal system was way to easy and i'll not dispute that, DOAU is much better)
The problem is that it's a vastly different fighting experience then what most true fighter fans are use to.
The thing i love about DOA and the reason why i've used it for tourneys before, is that it's a very easy system to learn and it's very easy for new players to get into. If you're a vet and you get whipped by a newbie it's because you don't know how to fight not because the system is broken.
I agree that no one but the most hardcore of hardcore would enter into a VF4 tourney without packing some serious skills but that's why i presented 3 choices.
It's a spectrium. DOA at the casual end and VF4 is at the upper end with the Hardcore crowd.
I will say this though, you're right the Guitly Gear is a great choice.

I gotta toss my vote in with Atari Warlords too. ANYONE can pick it up and play it. You don't need to know how to fiddle with a bazillion buttons. It's not a sports game or a fighter. It's player friendly. Novices, expects, everyone can play it without worrying that they're gonna get royally schooled.

I say buy Atari Anthology. Lots of stuff in there that could make an awesome tourney. (If you have the real thing, use it.) Which ones? IMO,
-Combat
-Warlords (another "yes" vote)
-Sky Diver
-Air-Sea Battle
-Outlaw
-And, of course, PONG.
A lot of these are pick-up-and-play games. Shouldn't take too long to introduce even casual gamers to them.

I like the suggestions. A lot of them were ones that I had been considering myself. Id like to try Warlords, but we would like to have more than one system, and I only own one (unless I use a 5200 with adapter). I am afraid the old system might turn people away, though.
For a tournament, there always has to be a clear winner, the games cant take too long, and other such considerations. For a university of this size we should be attracting more players than we have been.

Button mashers have no place in Tekken.
They'll get destroyed quick.
As it stands, in the tournament scene.
The most popular(attendance wise) 3D fighting game is Tekken 5. Tekken Tag Tournament still has a strong base as well.
We will see how SC3 does this year... and VF scene is pretty much nonexistant in the US compared to Japan. There are small clusters of players though. But no where near the scale of Tekken/Soul Calibur players.

Here's what I recommend, based on personal tourney experiences:
Street Fighter II Turbo
Mortal Kombat II
Tennis 2K2 (DC)
Bomberman Online (DC)
Soul Calibur 2
Halo
Power Stone 2 (DC)

Also don't forget you could always run Smash Bros Melee again. It is without question THE most popular fighting game out there for tournaments.

Personally my favorite party shooter is Timesplitters 2 for the GameCube. It's great because you can create your own levels and place turrets in random places. The levels get pretty massive and you can create team match games. It's so customizable it's crazy! Plus you can play as a monkey!! Come on!!! Awesome game here for a consule party. To settle everyone down, try Super Monkey Ball 1 or 2! Otherwise, just be like everyone else and do Halo... But PC games are the best choice when you get over 8 players. Do something like Total Annhiliation, Starcraft, Quake/Unreal Arena games, or one of the many realistic war games. LAN party anyone?

Kung Fu Chaos - Xbox
It is easy to learn and quirky to play. I haven't played it 4 players but it was pretty good 2 player.
And the more the merrier in fighting games.
This game won't be at the optimum for multiplayer unless you do some single player first.
Sems like everyone else has named the usual suspects: Halo SC, Tekken, etc
Have fun with your tourney :)
I might be joining a Halo 2 tourney this friday at a local college my cuz attends.
That is assuming i have 5 dollars by then :-/
