OK ....
I know there're 4 "versions".
1] "TIE Fighter" -- DOS
2] "TIE Fighter" -- Windows
3] "TIE Fighter: Collector's CD-ROM -- DOS
4] "TIE Fighter: Collector's CD-ROM -- Windows
I've read, but not too clearly, that the graphics are spectacular for #1, but #2, #3 & #4 are said to use the same graphics engine as "X-Wing" which is said to be not too good.
Any help?
Later!

3 and 4 use the X Wing vs Tie Fighter graphics engine, so they actually look a good bit better (texture support, higher resolutions, etc and whatnot) whereas 1 and 2 used a slightly upgraded version of the XWing engine (basically the same core engine but with gourad shading).
If you don't care for the textures in 3 and 4, I believe it's relatively easy to disable them and go with the classic gourad shaded look.
I recall the game running like shit on my SLC33 w/ gourad shading on, so i always had to go with flat shading until i upgraded to a 6x86- P133+, heh. Why I stuck with Cyrix after the SLC33 is anyone's guess. :)

I thought the version with the upgraded graphics engine was only included with the X-Wing vs Tie Fighter Collector's Edition (or some name like that), and that the Collector's Edition just included the expansion packs.

Yea, I didn't really know either until I took a chance on the $10 jewel case version at Walmart one day. Still gotta pick up the XWing rerelease as well. Even though it's inferior in virtually every way to Tie Fighter, I still have many, many, MANY great memories of playing it until the wee hours in the morning with the gravis gamepad (seriously, how the fuck did I do that? That gamepad was crap!), always trying to complete all of those damned objectives.
Random tangent - the name "Asskicker" wouldn't fit, so my friends and I would wind up flying with "Asskicke", which yielded a pretty cool pilot picture :)

That's what I mean ....
#1 & #2 look & play better than "X-Wing", but #3 & #4 use the "X-Wing" "GamePlay Engine" -- if you will -- which is said to reek.
This from the review of "TIE Fighter: Collector's CD-ROM" from "MobyGames" ....
"The new CD version uses the appalling "X-Wing VS. TIE Fighter" engine, which does take something away from the original way things worked."
"TIE Fighter: Collector's CD-ROM" MobyGames Review (http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/star-wars-tie-fighter-collectors-cd-rom/reviews/reviewerId,2746/)
So "TIE Fighter: Collector's CD-ROM" looks better but plays worse ....
Is that it?

No, only 1 and 2 use the upgraded X Wing engine. 3 and 4 use the X Wing vs Tie Fighter engine. I didn't find the gameplay to be any worse in the XvT engine releases, for what it's worth, especially since you can run the Windows version just fine in WindowsXP without having to resort to DOSbox or any similar products.

Ya mean "TIE Fighter: Collector's CD-ROM" -- Windows will run in XP?
If that's what ya mean that sure is a relief since the thought of maybe having to play through "DOS Box" was kinda off-putting.
