Looking back, how is Super Mario World 1 really?

Maybe I don't get it... I played it for a while and I thought it was good, but not great. I I bought it recently for my nephew's GBA and decided that I was going to really force myself to play it for a long time, preferably to beat it... and I find it good, but definitely not great.

Truthfully, I much more enjoyed Super Mario Bros 1. [Edit - Also if done correctly I enjoy 3D more - like Banjo-Kazooie 1 = masterpiece.] For me, Mario World 1 falls into the category of a good game, but not great.

So I'm wondering, seeing as how Mario World is often one of the games brought up as the best of all time, do you agree? Why or why not?

One of the best videogames EVER.

In my opinion, it took the great stuff that was developed in Super Mario Brothers 3 and added a little too much to it. I played it for a long time in the store, and it never interested me. Platformers need to have simple controls, but a wide variety of enemies and tricks to figure out in my opinion to be great. SMW had too much.

That's not to say that I didn't beat the game (it was a pack-in for my SNES). I did. But I've never gone back to it.

Donkey Kong Country was the best platformer on the system -- actually, probably DKC2 -- in my opinion, and that's the series that got me to beg for a SNES from my parents.

Whenever Super Mario 64 comes up as "Best Mario Ever" (or something to that extent), I always cringe and think of Super Mario World - my choice for Best Mario Ever.

Great levels, design, colors, ideas, gameplay, etc. If you just want to play through the game normally, you can. If you want to find a shortcut and get through the game very quickly, you can. If you want to explore and find all 96 exits, you can. Lots of options.

Super Mario World is easily one of the greatest 2D platform games ever created. I know that I play it from start to finish - hitting all the exits - at least once every other year or so.

Great game. Classic 2D platforming at it's best.

Yeah, easily my favorite Mario game, with SMB2 (Japanese) in 2nd place. Mario World and Castlevania SotN are definitely some of the best of the genre.

It's an excellent game, but I prefer SMW2:Yoshi's Island a little more.

Yep, 2d running and jumping at its best. The world is expansive and rich. Mario is just the right size and has near-perfect handling and speed. One thing that isn't mentioned often: The final battle. It's actually really cool.

I recently stuck Super Mario World into my SNES (for the first time in 3 or 4 months) and, as always, I couldn't put the controller down. Looking back, I would say that it is very good. :)

I love the game and all its charm, tho I have a slight tilt to smb3.

Been playing Yoshi's Island again lately...I forgot how great this game is. It's an almost perfect sequel in my mind, in that it offers alot of new ideas yet still keeps the feel of the original. I almost want to say Yoshi's Island is better, but I can't remember anything later in the game (I'm on world4) so I'll hold that judgement untill I finish it.

I like how it merges the SMB2(usa) enemies too. Though I think SMW had the ninjas.

It set the standard for 2D platforming, and even after hundreds of games tried to be like Mario World, most of them can't even compare.

There are a few SNES platformers I like better than Mario World though. Super Metroid, Kirby Super Star, and Yoshi's Island most notably. I'd also say the DKC games are comparable. EVO, too.

To me, this is the pinnacle of Mario gaming. It has everything. I enjoyed it back in 1992, I continued to pop it in form time to time in the 90’s and even bought the GBA version a while back. I play it, my wife plays, hell; even my 60-year-old mother-in-law plays it. Mario 64? BAH!!!! This is the best Mario to be found. It is just as great of a game as it was 13 years ago.

Man, has it really been that long?

Hey, where's the poll option "I dont know, Never played it"?

That's me, No SNES, and I have never tried this on an emulator, though I am sure I will play it someday.

DigitalSpace

Imo, it's still the best platformer ever made.

Hey, where's the poll option "I dont know, Never played it"?

You're missing out. Play it ASAP.

I have only played it sparingly on other peoples SNES's but I have it now so I may pop it in. Seems as though others enjoy it a bit :D

I might go as far as to say that if someone doesn't like SMW, they don't like games very much at all. SMW and SMW2 are as good as it gets.... I bought my SNES in college specifically to play it. (This was a time when I was mostly a PC gamer)

SMW is my favorite Mario platform game. Although The Addams Family edges it out in terms of my favorite platformer of all time though :)

During the time I thought SMW was beyond awesome, the age of 16 bit wowed me to no end and I thought it was the greatest Mario game ever. Now looking back and replaying both recently I honestly think the 16bit ver of SMB3 on All Stars is MUCH better.

Awexome game. I like the exploration aspect of this game. Many of the levels had two exits, which meant that I would have to explore each stage very carefully in order to find all of the exits. It also had a save feature so that I wouldn't have to play the whole thing in one sitting. Awexome game.

Great game, but a step down from SMB3. It was a showcase for the SNES and thus, the designers had to put much emphasis on graphics. Riding a dino is cool, I guess. But what happened to all the funky ideas from SMB3? SMB3 expanded on the Mushroom Kingdom that we were introduced to in SMB1, but in SMW, the Mushroom Kingdom was gone. Mario looks almost out of place in a world that is pretty much normal (outside of the enemies of course).

I'd like to see another Super Mario BROS. game. It's been 15 years.

No he doesn't, check the Super Mario 64 thread, and then compare it with this one.

One of the top games ever made. Though it doesn't reach the pinacle of 2D platformers, which is Yoshi's Island. I always wished it was a bit longer (though with all these new hacks showing up, my wishes may have come true).

I first played Super Mario World three years ago. I was a Sega fangirl growing up, but SMW was one of the games that made the SNES a personal favorite. At first, I thought it added gratitious elements (the power up mechanics, Yoshi, expanded map) to Super Mario Bros. 3, but as I got deeper into it, I realized that everything was intergrated very well, and that the extras made the game feel richer. I also liked that it had longer levels and numerous secrets to discover, and that the control was so tight. It's become one of my favorite platformers.

o, halo thar

For me, SMW was...well, I saw a friend playing it some back in the day and was pretty legitimately blown away, but now I can't really seem to get into it. I'll have to spend more time.

SMW II: Yoshi's Island is a good deal of fun, though. Too bad my battery's dead.

One the best Mario titles made, before Yoshi's Island. Took the improvements from SMB3 to the next level, literally.
