Who could resist?! Mario on the Megadrive .. and with added bonus that it comes in one of those cool dinky boxes, like the Sunsoft Japanese titles ...

They even had the cheek to whack the official Sega logo on there!

I could have sworn that I've seen that game at a local game store. Its not there anymore, but that thing looks really familliar.
I don't know how it would of ended up in Canada though.
Nice find 8-)

Is this the same game as the rom found on Sega-16.com?

Dunno, never really gone in for ROMs ... doesn't feel right. Of course, that doesn't really make sense when I am more than happy to buy dodgy Russian pirate carts, but I don't claim to be logical!

Hehe ... at least the Russian mafia are good for something, eh!

Could someone translate the russian text at the back of the box? Will be interesting to know what it says. Heh.

You do know that this game is not licensed by Sega, and so it is probably pirated...

Well, pirate carts were certainly a lot more common in Canada than the US, but I don't recall ever seeing one with Russian text.

Well, the only words I can make out is "Super Mario," but your probably already knew that much, lol. I can't read Russain, but I can usually pronounce Cyrillic. Funny story...the first foreign language I ever tried learning was Russian using my dad's (actually, his dad's) old Russian text book back when I was 10. I gave up quite quickly, but I still crack open that book every few years. Many of my Grandad's notes are still in it.

Is this a remake of a Mario game, a hack of another game with Mario srpites, or a "pirate original" all new Mario game?

It looks like the second or third choice, considering one of the box pics.

If this is the pirated homebrew game that plays kinda like a tacky version of Chip and Dale's Rescue Rangers, I've already played it. It's not good at all, and I don't think it's worth much, but hey, as long as you're happy with your personal find, that's all that matters. Congratulations.

How does it play?

Like Chip & Dale's Rescue Rangers. Jumping on enemies will hurt you (?) and you can hide in boxes. It's a hack, kind of like Sonic 4 for the SNES (itself a hack of Speedy Gonzales.)

Nice find, vroom. I recently got a hold of a pirate B&W Gameboy cart for precisely the same reason i.e. - it had a Sonic hack on it. The cognitive dissonance is irresistable.

The really sad thing about my local game market is that we're a very provincial lot. So the game store customers are largely clueless as to the existence of international game piracy, shoddy hacks, etc. and some, but not all, of the local merchants are perfectly willing to exploit You can imagine how these kind of conversations go: Customer: "Omg! A Mario game for the Genesis?! I thought he was just on the Nintendo." Shady dealer: "Um...yeah. Ultra rare title. Limited release. I'll let it go for $65 since it's loose."...unbeknownst to the buyer that the streets of Akihabara are littered with this junk.

There's another cart that exists called "Super 1998 Mario 2" that is essentially Sonic Jam 6 (http://shit.sclassic.net/index.php/Sonic_Jam_6) before it was hacked to put Sonic in it. I have yet to find anything more than these pictures (http://ntsc-uk.domino.org/showthread.php?t=31528&page=2&pp=10), and I'm pretty sure the cart hasn't been dumped yet. The play control is quite horrid in this one (speaking from experience with my own SJ6 cart), but nonetheless it's interesting.

Yeah, I played through the whole ROM. It looks like a hack of some Japanese Chip n' Dale game, because during the credits it's in Japanese and it says "CHIP N' DALE" and stuff.

Yeah, I know that guy. He also posts here - albeit very occasionally. He has an almost complete jp Megadrive collection 8-)

Plus a bunch of interesting pirates like the ones in that thread, and some more..

Did you also notice that the "Luigi" on the box is just Mario painted green? He still has the "M" on his hat and everything LMAO.

I LOOOVE Pirated games for this reason alone, the often hilarious attempts to make it look remotely like the real thing

Lol, I did a piece (http://www.sega-16.com/Feature-%20HHB%20Super%20Mario%20World.htm) on this game for my site a few months back. Had some potential, but jeez...

I remember hearing about a Mario game for Genesis... What really differs it from other mario games (Other than it being for a SEGA console) Is, Instead of jumping on enemies to kill them, You throw boxes at them.
