View Full Version : Is the arcade alley forum necessary any more?

Now that we have the forum split, is it really necessary to have the specialized arcade forum? Classic arcade game topics are less likely to get bumped down since we have classic and modern forums, and the thing is so far down the page I always forget to check it anyway.

Yes, it is a totally separate entity.

Absolutely we need it.
Arcade machines are a different beast from consoles and thus deserving of their own section.

It's getting very, very little traffic.

I like it along with the tech forum and proto forum, but I don't see them really being used properly. I still see people posting obvious arcade and tech related comments in the main forums. Either these need to be deleted or more posts need to moved into them.

What harm is it causing, keeping it around?

Goblin is right in that we don't have enough arcade (and tech, and proto) posts made in the correct specific places. Sometimes, I still suspect many people aren't even aware of the Arcade Alley and that's why they neglect it. More arcade-specific threads SHOULD get sent over there - and I'd gladly do it - but it's the responsibility of the moderator of the forum that a thread originated in to move it OUT. I can't move it IN.
That said, both classic AND modern arcade games are discussed there, so the classic games forum doesn't completely parallel it. Further, given that it's a more specialized forum, it cannot be expected to enjoy the high traffic of the "major" forums - especially at a site where the majority of members are into console games moreso than arcade games.
Admittedly, I've gotten to like the smaller community that the Arcade Alley has become. Even in the classic games forum, I know that an arcade-specific post I make is going to drop off or be missed by the people I want to see it the most - the Arcade Alley crowd.

As usual, I'm with Mr. Ninja 100%.

I never go into the Arcade forum, so I can't really say that it is important or not. But I'm not into Arcades (anymore) so I can't really say whether or not it is needed.
I couldn't imagine the prototype forum having more traffic than the arcade forum, so I don't think thats an issue.

Perhaps the answer here is to move it up next to Classic and Modern Gaming.

That's a great idea PDF
I would definitly visit it alot more, basically i have 3 tabs open one for classic, modern and off topic but that would definitly give me a reason to post in the arcade antics forum

Do people really visit individual "forums"? :?
Geezus christ just use 'view posts since last visit' and see all posts in one nice homogenous blob. That's the way I dig it. I have zero idea what 'forums' exist except one. "DP" LOL

An arcade forum is necessary, maybe it don´t have a lot of traffic, but...what will you do? close it? move all the topics??...bad idea...

Why would moving all the topics be a bad idea? It's not like they'd be lost.

In a world of "Nintendo is Going to Die by Sony's Hands in the Next-Gen" and "HOW RARE IS MY NES SCORE?!", the arcade topics would be lost in the modern and classic gaming forums.

I really hope the arcade alley stays put. Arcade machines are a completely different animal than classic console/computer games. I only wish it was a little more lively, but it's better than being inundated with topics. Quality over quantity.
And also, if there was a merge, what about newer arcade games? Would those go in the modern gaming forum?

I hope the arcade alley stays put. At times I've been a little disappointed that it's got as little traffic as it does, but it makes sense to me to keep those posts separate from the classic/modern gaming posts. Many of the posts in the arcade alley are technical in nature, so it's more of a dedicated area where people looking to get or share arcade knowledge can do to. I fought to get it opened and I'll fight to keep it open.

Yeah, um, that's speculation made by the original poster and I fail to see how repeating it addresses anything. It also makes very little sense as a response to what I wrote, especially given that I've pointed out why I think the topics would disappear in BOTH forums, classic or not.
I'm not quite sure what your agenda here is, but you seem pretty strongly against a forum that you have absolutely nothing to contribute to. Still, you're entitled to your view on the matter; but if you don't have anything constructive to add, then you might as well just let the rest of the posters fill in their positive reasons for keeping the place alive. As it is now, you're posts aren't making much of a case against anything and you're coming off as a kill-joy.

I'm coming off as a killjoy merely because I don't see the problem with enfolding the arcade forum into the current Modern and Classic gaming forums? Ooookay. This thread asked if people felt it should be kept around or not, not "post here if you want to keep it only."
And I don't feel it's speculation, I quoted it because I agree with it, that with the current forum divisions, things wouldn't get bumped off the pages so quick, which you appeared to be implying by your line about all the fanboy topics.

I say keep it. It seems to attract a good quality of conversation IMO. Yeah, logically it should all fall under "classic gaming", but I don't see a reason to kill a perfectly good forum, even if it is a little less travelled.

I'm sure that whatever I have to say on the matter will be of no consuquence to anyone, but...
The whole argument that the arcade forum can be folded into the other gaming forums is just plain silly. The exact same argument could be made about the import forum and the prototype forum. In fact I would argue that there is a stronger case for getting rid of those forums than the arcade forum. Import and prototype topics would be right at home in the modern and classic gaming forums, and I don't really see why they need to have their own forums. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that we should get rid of either of them. But I don't see how you can argue for eliminating the Arcade Alley forum without using the same argument on the other forums I just mentioned.
I am not an arcade guy, but I completely see why there is a seperate forum for arcade topics, and I feel it should stay that way. Furthermore, I agree with whoever said that the Arcade forum should be brought up with the other VG forums. It can switch places with the OT forum, which certainly doesn't need to be grouped with VG forums. That's a change that I would like to see. I like a "How many times do you wipe after you shit?" thread as much as anyone else, but it isn't why any of us are here. Well, almost any of us.

are less likely to is, by its grammar, speculation. There is no other way to grammatically interpret that sentence.

Speaking of exposure.. that reminds me. I'm going to move this over into the Classic gaming forum, where more of the "type of people who have something to contribute" to the arcade forum will be more likely to see this thread and contribute to it as well; there are lots of people that don't visit off topic. I'll leave a shadow topic in here, as well, so it can be followed.

I agree (But I don't like the fact Classic and Modern gaming were made into seperate forums!)
