View Full Version : What game blew you away within the first 5 minutes?

Hey all!

I realise that this topic (or something like it!) has probably been covered before but I couldn't find anything on it so I thought I'd ask it again!

What game have you played and were truly blown away within the first 5 minutes? I don't mean a game that you played and thought 'this is pretty cool.' I mean a game that really meant something to you, something that maybe changed your view of games.

Personally, I would have to go with Metroid Prime. That game looked like it was going to be a first person Tomb Raider (if we were lucky!) It turned out to be something really different. The opening sequence perfectly captures the proceeding atmosphere of the game. The music is impeccable, the graphics are gorgeous and the controls make the wanting control system of a console pad really work. I played this game for 5 minutes and I knew I was playing something special...

So what would you pick?

I would have to go with Call of Duty or RE4.

First of all, the graphics in both just blew my mind. I had never felt so into a game solely because the graphics taking me there. Those two are just amazing graphically.

Also, the gameplay. You weren't just going through a level shooting nazis, and you weren't just going through a mansion looking for clues. In CoD you would be asked to sometimes retreat, or blow up a certain target, give covering fire, etc. In RE4 you were asked to preform combos, like in a fighting game, to sometimes take down and enemy.

These two games were just a pleasure to play, and a much needed boost to get me back into gaming. Good deal.

The game in your avatar, Metroid Prime Hunters DS, I couldn't (and still can't) how good the control is.

What flaming? The game's shit. :-P

Seriously though. Please don't flame any post. It'd be nice if for once people didn't feel the urge to disagree. Just post what you love!

The first whole lotta minutes in both SF's is just story. I didn't think boy waking up from getting hit too hard in sword practice and boy going to school were all that mind blowing hehe :)

I'd have to say in the current Gen, Katamari Damacy! I had read about it, and it sounded neat, and for $20 I thought why not. Hell within the FIRST minute (just the opening cinema) i was blown away!

I gotta say I was dreading the training mission. I kept thinking when is this gonna end I wanna play and then you get ambused. As one of the comrades said there is no better training than fighting a real enemy. That just blew me away. The 1st and 2nd Russian missions are mindblowing and you just want to keep playing.

Off the top of my head, definitely Tempest 2000 (on Jaguar), Jet Grind Radio, Rez, Radiant Silvergun. . .I'd have to agree with Metroid Prime as well. The intro was pretty thrilling.

For me I will have to say the original John Madden Football
for the genesis. I was revolutionary in terms of gameplay and visuals. There is a little bit of maddens artistry in all of todays sports games. It took football from the sideview this is the best we can do to total immersion into the game.
The minute after I saw and played the 1st quarter I knew it was special. I don't think there is a true football player today that played that game when it first came out wacth the kickoff and didn't feel there was something big here.If it wasn't for that madden game sports gaming would not be where it is today.

Even though now I have personal issues with the direction of ea I must give them props and credit. Just think about how many ideas from madden are integrated in todays games

Let's see here.

Genny: Vectorman and Earthworm Jim. Two game that really changed platformers for me. The Humour in EWJ blew my mind (I consider it one of the only games I truely find funny) and Vectorman had great graphics, and superb game play.

Saturn: More than any other Panzer Saga and Shining Force III really drove me wild. Two of the greatest RPG's ever made.

Dreamcast: Seeing Soul Calibur and thinging tomyslef "Welcome to the next level"

Gamecube: Metroid was wild, but he first Prince of Persia showed my what a 3d Platformer could be. And to rewind time?! WOW!

Most recently; RE4. The first 5 minutes were an amazing roller coaster of emotions. I remember poping in the game disc, watching the cutscene, geting used to the basic controls, then walking forward 10''...then it happened...

I WALKED THROUGH A TREE!!! I was incredible pissed that this game I'd just spent $49.95 had such a f****** obvious flaw! It set the bar incredibly low for the rest of the game! After ranting for 3 minutes, I picked the controller back up, met my first ganado, and fell madly in love with my tree-walking-through game.

Lol, actually I onw quite a few systems, Gamecube not the best of them. What I meant to say is its good, for a Gamecube game. LOL j/k.

Burnout 3:Takedown
I was outstanded by the crashing. Its so much fun to just pile into the other cars.

Sonic Adventure
Wonderful, actually one of the first 3D games I played. The first TRUE 3D game. (I don't count games like Sonic 3D Blast, that wasn't very 3D)

Also, quite a few other games I just can't think of.

Sonic Adventure. I was blown away by the graphics and gameplay.

Best Gaming Moment I have had: when you beat the game with everybody and then play as super sonic and the creature destroys the city and pops out of the building. I actually said wow out loud during that cut scene.

Shenmue

I was not only blown away by the 1st 5 minutes, but I would stop playing during the day, and just feel as if I had experienced something.

Not many games out there are detective games, which is what this game is, you are a detective gathering clues.

Also Burnout 3. Enough said on that one.

Dead or Alive 2. Wow, wow is all I can say.

Virtua Fighter 4: evo. I preordered thinking it would just be vf4 with a couple new characters, but they revamped the way a bunch of characters move and fight.

Crazy Taxi (Dreamcast)

Bought that one at EBGames on the 16th of August 2003.

I was Blown away by it... Practically when i put it in the machine.. Weeks later i was still playing it constantly.

I don't play it like mad anymore, although i still enjoy the crazy taxi series.. It took me four whole months before it stopped being my favorite game..

Halo 2. One of the first cinemas where the Master Chief rides a bomb in the stratosphere...goddamn. I looked at that and said, when I get an LCD TV, I need to watch that shit. Sent chills down my back.

Also, when I played Donkey Kong Country on my very own SNES for the first time. I can still remember it. That's where it all started. Goooooooood shit.

Resident Evil: Code Veronica - Absolutely astounded me, convinced me to get a DC and got me back into gaming after a majot lull.

Awesome topic. I have several games that can be listed, but I will attempt to keep my list short.

1. Super Mario Brothers - The original. This is the game that got me addicted to video games completely. I was so amazed by the game. To this day I still go back and play through as it is still completely fun for me.

2. Fire Pro Wrestling D - I had never played an import wrestling game before I bought this, and man was it an awesome experience. This is (to me) the single greatest wrestling game ever made.

3. Metal Gear Solid 1 - I had already been a huge fan of the NES Metal Gears, and when I played this I was hooked the very first second that the intro began playing. The movie-like storytelling of the game was something pretty much new at the time, and for sure was unrivaled for a long time.

4. Metroid Prime 1 - WOW! What a game. I personally hate fps games. But, when I rented this a couple of months ago for the first time, it blew me away. The graphics, the music, the massive mythology that was created just for this game, it all made it such an experience. I was so excited when EB was doing a special on the game about a month ago where they were selling used copies for $5 X_x

5. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - Now, I have been a huge Zelda fan since the very first one on the NES, but I for some reason just didn't want to play this game. The graphics just didn't look right for Zelda. 2D is what it should be. So, on a whim, I bought a used copy at EB about a year ago for about $8 or so. And I popped it in....I became addictedto it. What an awesome game it is. You can tell that they really took the time to make an awesome game.

Oh yeah, there's one I forgot.

I love the music, and the gameplay is great. And you're always trying to beat your old record so the replay value is high. Its the best non-racing car game I've played.

Shenmue
Forgot about that too. LOL

I haven't played the first one, but I got the second one. I was amazed.

It's so much fun collecting capsule toys, and the storyline is great. Its full of mystery's, like you don't even know why the game's called Shenmue till near the end of the second game. And even then you don't fully understand it. This game does a real thing to your mind and it will keep you guessing for years.

Final Fantasy VII (PS1)
The opening sequence was truly outstanding, and made me realise that games would never be the same anymore.

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)
Although FF7 had impressed me a lot, after finishing the game I realised that it was mostly a standard (albeit extremely high quality) console RPG with "merely" updated graphics. Then Zelda came along, and showed how next-gen games are truly meant to be made and played. Even today, I still consider this to be all-round the best game of all time.

Metroid Prime (GC)
What can I say that hasn't already been mentioned? Seeing Samus in beautiful 3D for the first time is simply one of the most memorable moments in video-game history. Just pure class from start to finish, and the only game of this generation that truly fulfilled me as a gamer. Amazing.

True true, but then again, I was "blown" by the graphics LOL And remember the short scene in SF1? The one that explains the story? That was pretty neat... Anyways, forgot to mention SF3, which kicked ass and I'm yet to beat it... Man.... Looks awesome to its time... Great game... Nothing else can be said about it.

I'll list a few biggies:

Revenge of Shinobi (MD)
My first game and it was amazing - those fireballs that appear after you kill a villain were great at the time.

Gunstar Heroes (MD)
Brilliant!

Radiant Silvergun (Saturn)
Brilliant^6

Metroid Prime (GC)

God of War (PS2)

Well while my list may be varied, I also have neglected to
put in so so many games due to the fact they usually take
more then 5 minutes to get me sucked in!

Sonic the Hedgehog - SMS and MD
what can I say at the time there was nothing quite like it
the pure speed and enjoyment of insanely good design.

Soliel/Crusaders of Centy - MD-GEN
While this may seem an oddity here, at the time I was
completly hooked with this title, amazingly simple, but
has not aged well at all

CoD- PC
The first time i played this I kept shooting my own allies!
as was how emerresed you where in the action and sound
that you just shot everything in your sight before it shot you!

Crazy Taxi - DC
This showed Sega's ability to make an awsome game into
a next gen graphic and sound bonanza

Shenmue - DC
Same reasons as above!

Metal Gear Solid 3 - PS2
Auite new i know but wow since my life got so busy and
complicated I really didnt have much time for games, I
was buying lots but playing them very little as my intrest
was waining, then BAM this game came along and Id have
to say that the game had me hooked in 5 minutes and it
only got better every 5 Mins!

There have been MANY games in the past that blew me away, dating from 1980 to present, but I'll list the latest game that has done that for me:

Kirby for the DS.

Damn, a classic platformer, in 2d (beautiful 2d) that plays great without even touching a control pad! Just amazing. Easily my favorite game of the year.

Mike Tyson's Punch Out - NES

When I played this game I was blown away to say the least.

Super Metroid - SNES

The great graphics, awesome music and everthing I loved about the original Metroid's gameplay was here.

Mario 64 - N64

Running around in 3D with perfect controlls, and solid graphics.

Zelda:OoT - N64

Zelda hit 3D perfectly, the game felt epic from the start.

Resident Evil - PS1

My first horror game and still my all time favorite RE.

Altered Beast - Genesis

Going from the NES to arcade perfect gaphics on the Genesis. Altered Beast was a show piece back in the day.

Soul Calibur - DC

Wow, the last great leap in graphics for me. The fighting was fast and the contols were great.

GTA3 - PS2

Freedom, finally all out freedom in a console game. The first time I drove the car into Portland my jaw hit the floor.

These games really had a huge impact on me when I first played them. They put me in awe.

Pac-Man- 2600 blew me away as to how they could make that pile of crap since it looked nothing like the arcade.

F.E.A.R.- PC
Everyone needs to try this game- grab the demo and see for yourself.

When I first heard about MAME I said what's this program?
Why is it called MAME? Is it violent? Then I said holy crap my favorite (or a few of them back then anyway) arcade games emulated and I can play them for free! What the heck is emulation anyway I said and I now have every working MAME Rom and many others. While not a game it still blew me away with what it could do.

To try to cut down my list a little, I'm going to limit it to only games that I wasn't expecting to be great, but after 5 minutes turned into 5 hours, I realized I loved them.

Headhunter (DC) - I bought this when I went to Europe because I wanted some import Dreamcast games and thought it would be cool to buy them there. This and Planet Ring were the only two I bought, and I was really looking for Rez and Shenmue II, so I wasn't too thrilled. When I finally decided to play it, I spent a day playing the first disk all the way through. Still one of my favorite titles.

Feel the Magic (DS) - I bought it because it was cheap and made by Sega, and I try to support them whenever possible. But I got it before I had a DS and wasn't too thrilled to get to play it. I've now probably played it more than any other DS game I own.

Pac Pix (DS) - I literally accidentally bought this game, and it turned out to be like a childhood fantasy come alive. While it isn't that deep, I'm really glad I got it.

Robotron 64 (N64) - I like Robotron and I like classic updates that put new spins on games... but I was very nervous about a 3D Robotron. I thought it worked like magic, and played it all day.

Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis (Xbox) - I sat around playing this game, expecting to not like it and then sell it off, and I ended up loving it! My first 5 minutes turned into 6 hours in one night, which never, EVER happens to me with games. A great simulator!

Roller Coaster Tycoon (PC) - I love roller coasters. I love Sim City. I expected this game to really disappoint. Boy was I wrong.
