The original MechAssault has to be on the list. My fave mech game of all time because of the online play alone. I've wasted countless Saturday nights on that game. Simple, yet fun and addictive gameplay makes it great.

Steel Batalion earns a spot in the top ten just for the ridiculously huge controller.
MechWarrior 2 is also a classic.

Zone of the Enders: The Second Runner is probably my favorite mech game. I've only played a few mech games, but I liked that the best. Most mech games with camera systems like the one in the Armored Core series I was never able to get into. I could never keep the camera level. The ZOE games never had that problem and I enjoyed them a lot more.
I've never played any of the pc mech games so I can't say anything about them.

You could probably even make a case for Xenogears or Xenosaga here. Maybe even Cyberbots?
In any case, number one should be Steel Battalion.
No other game put such big, brass ones out there to make such a detailed/authentic (authentic?) mech sim.
Mechwarrior 2 should rightfully be second place, but SB's gotta get the nod for any true fan of the genre.

Here are some others:
Slave Zero (DC)
Transformers (PS2)
RAD - Robot Alchemical Drive (PS2)
S.L.A.I. - Steel Lancer Arena International (PS2)
GunGriffon Blaze (PS2)
GunMetal (XBX)
Murakumo - Renegade Mech Pursuit (XBX)
GunGriffon: Allied Strike (XBX)
Robotech: Invasion (XBX)
Robotech: Battlecry (PS2/GCN/XBX)
Heavy Gear (PC)
Heavy Gear II (PC)
Personally, I'll take the MechWarrior series on either the PC or XBox any day. Mech Commander was cool too for the strategy side. I need to play Front Mission 4 and Ring of Red. I have both, but never got around to playing them.

Transformers aren't mechs.
From the original post:
i've always have a soft spot for big robots you can control...
I love it when people have nothing to contribute to a thread but criticism as to another person's response, especially when that person didn't even bother to read the original post.
If a Transformer is not a "big robot" that you can control, WTF is it?

Space Griffon vf9 and Ring Of Red would be in there... I dont play alott of mech games I guess.
Oh and If you never played Space Griffon Give it a chance the graphics arent too pretty but its like a mech combat version of Wing Commander "storyline, charater interaction, twisting plot" all that shizzle. Little cheesy I guess but...

As other have said, the Gun Griffon games need to be on there, and I think R. A. D. does count as well. Battletech for Genny is missing as well. There were a couple of other mech games for Genesis as well though their names escape me.
As for which games I'd pick personally, I'd have to go with Zone of the Enders: Anubis/2nd Runner, Gun Griffon 1/2, Front Mission 3, and Mechwarrior 2 + Ghost Bear's Legacy.
So if Ring of Red really any good? I'd only heard lackluster things about it.
