Ouch, that second pic is really bad. Please tell me that's the line that started 24 hours before the 360 went on sale.
What does Japan have against the Xbox anyway?

Probably that its made by an American company. Either that or there isnt enough stupid "JOB" based games.

Well...compare it to games Japan loves.
Japan:
Nintendogs
Feel the Magic
Katamari Damacy
America:

I see on the gumball machine they are still using the same idiotic ad campaign "jump in" if Microsoft is dumb enough to use the same ads (that look like Nike ads not video game ads) in Japan that might have something to do with the lack of people.

probably the same reason i dont like the xbox, theres little to no original or innovative software. the library lacks "niche" appeal. admittedly it is a decent peice of hardware but no game that really warrants imidiate purchase (dont give me that halo bull).

The only game genre Xbox is lacking in is RPG's, which is okay by me since I can't stand 'em. Other than that though, the Xbox has TONS of great exclusive games to offer.

i'm not even talking rpgs, i havent bought many this gen. to give you an example of stuff not found on the xbox (that i like anyways) i'll list some titles for the ps2 and game cube that i like (they also seem to be bigger titles in the japanese market).
Cubivore (GC)
Katamari Damacy (PS2)
Ikaruga (GC/DC)
Gitaroo Man (PS2)
Castle Shikigami 2 (PS2)
Animal Crossing (GC)
Space Channel 5 (PS2/DC)
Guilty Gear series *i know theres a xbox release but i feel they play best on the ps2 controller*
Metal slug *see guilty gear*
King of Fighters *see guilty gear*
these are niche market titles

Like you said, all of those games are available on both consoles (except for Metal Slug 3 which is Xbox exclusive) but only the Xbox versions feature Live play, which give the games way more re-play value IMO. There is also KoF '94 Re-bout and Samurai Showdown V coming out soon on Xbox too, which will also be system exclusives.
Who uses stock controllers to play fighters anyway?
djbeatmongrel
12-11-2005, 09:06 PM
i am not sure about the japanese market but i know for myself online play really isnt a big draw nor do i like buying extra controllers for fighters exclusively.
but do you get what i am saying with the niche titles, overall the xbox doesnt have much.
also all those games i listed (that are xbox titles as well) have ps2 releases over in japan so i think just being able to have that on a different platform keeps them from buying an xbox.

Maybe they want to spend their money on something that would actually be worth buying at this point in time instead of a system with a library full of downgraded current-gen ports I don't know just a guess.
Edit: Oops I mean those dumb Japs obviously hate America and only play stupid games that nobody likes. I love the Xbox 360 and also America!

Lol well I do have to say I agree fully with what you said :)
but I dunno one of the biggest draws of the 360 for me is the marketplace games. but it's still not enough for me to go for it.

I remember their TGS showreel...highlighting all the same games as the US showreel...FPS, Sports, etc...smart move.

Maybe I am mixing up my events, but there was a recent show in Japan where the 360 was show and the only U.S. release shown was Gears of War?(and people were impressed)
Seriously....... I think MS is actually going to try in Japan this time.

This really isn't that ridiculous. The discounts are only being offered when you sign a AOL service contract. Stores like Best Buy do this all the time. They'll give you several-hundred dollars cash back if you sign up with MSN or AOL when you buy a computer there. They're just doing the same thing in Japan with the 360's.

It doesn't matter what kind they are. The hardware is irrelevant. The bottom line is that the company gives the retailer x-ammount of dollars for every ISP contract they get signed for them. All the Japanese retailers are doing is applying that money towards the 360 purchase.
It's just a promotion for some stores to move the consoles quicker. It's not like stores are already trying to dump their entire 360 stock to make room for the PS3. The 360's sold in Japan without the ISP service contracts are still being sold at standard retail prices.

point is most retailers don't do promotions like these for brand new products. the only reason the retailers are doing this is because the 360 isn't selling very well. I think we're all clear it is not a price drop.

A long, long time ago in 1999 Best Buy was running some "deal" with MSN where if you signed up for 2-years or something you would get $200 to spend on anything you want in the store.
Working there at the time i can say that I personally witnessed people using that $200 on the (then) newly released Dreamcast.

if i were some japanese dude i would hop on this offer dispite the crappy ISP promo behind it....i mean for $150 up front and some modification you would have a beyond cutting edge computer with multiple dual core p4's ....but thats the kind of person i am, to tweak something to get it to do something other than its origonal purpose...you know its just a matter of time any way...
I bet majority of that crowd is there just for the girls, by majority I mean everyone except that guys wife.
I personally never had any interest in the XBOX, so I'm with the Japanese on this one.

Here's an AP story on the Xbox 360's Japanese launch with some actual numbers:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10449175/
The key paragraphs:
"Microsoft sold 62,135 machines over the weekend, or just 39 percent of the 159,000 consoles it is estimated to have shipped to stores, according to data from market researcher Enterbrain Inc.
"The figures indicate a slower start than the original Xbox, which failed in Japan. The first Xbox sold about 123,000 units in the first three days of its launch in 2002, according to Tokyo-based Enterbrain."

I think your chances of playing "Duke Nukem Forever" are better than scoring with those chicks.
But some humor, knowing Japanese, and lots of saki might help those odds. :P

A SLOWER start than the original xbox. There isn't a word strong enough to describe OUCH. Yes, I'm sure the main reason it's not selling (again) is because it's american made. But as otehrs have stated, the xbox is built for americans.
I still don't have an xbox, and can still only think of 3-4 games I would buy if I HAD one. I have no interest in sports titles, I'd rather play ANY FPS with a mouse on a computer, and racing games can be done on any system.
That leaves panzer dragoon orta, some fighting games, Fable, neverwinter nights (Was it NWN or another game I'm thinking of?)
I've made this post in the past, and I'll still stick to it:
The system with the most RPG's wins. Just check the number of RPG's on nintendo consoles versus their sales numbers.

I think that's a misapprehension of the evidence...the 360 has some famous Japanese developers making RPGs for it, I don't really see a gap there.
What seems obvious is that the nation has some very strong insular tendencies. I guess you can't blame them as their economy is still somewhere in the sewers, but it's still dismaying (if not outright disgusting) to see such a casual dismissal of what will be a great system.

The biggest reason, IMO, the Xbox was never a success in Japan is the same reason it WAS a success in the US...
Halo.
Bottom line is that the Japanese will never care about FPS. No FPS, no matter how good it is, is a system-seller there. What sells systems in Japan is:
Final Fantasy
Dragon Quest
Metal Gear
Mario
Zelda
MS Gundam games
Gran Turismo
Resident Evil
Simulations (dating sims, densha de go, etc...)
Mah Jong Games
The Japanese went crazy for Steel Battalion (Tekki), but a $200 game can only move so much hardware....
Splinter Cell never caught on over there because it doesn't have the story elements that MGS does.
Microsoft largely relied on Halo to get Xboxes into homes in the United States, in Japan they can't do that, and they can't rely on Live either, because that also won't get them anywhere. They need Square/Enix, Koei, Konami, Capcom, Treasure, Namco, and Sega, because those are the companies that are making the games that the Japanese customer is interested in.
