It was released in homebrew communities. I don't think it was ever to be released officially.

Homebrew only.

It was released on a demo disc in Europe I believe. If not, it was done and completed for one.
The ports that were made by individuals do not include the original game, as it isn't legal to put those data sets on them. If you get one with the original game included, it was an update someone else did, not the person who coded the engine.

The game was being ported but got cancelled before it was released. The version available for the longest time was built off of the leaked version of the cancelled game, but now there's DCQuake (http://dcquake.sourceforge.net/) and QuakeDC (http://quakedev.dcemulation.com/downloads.htm) available that were ported over from the original source code (and support mods, so download Zerstorer!)

are you sure it was ever supposed to be an official release? i know they put out quake iii arena, and i dont think the DC was around for the original quake..
edit: quake 2 was out before the DC was even released so i dont see why they would have had plans to put out the original

if u use a cdr in your dreamcast it will screw the laser so eventually your breaking your dreamcast.

so.....how do you get the game on your DC if you don't use a cdr? Is using an emulator for DC complicated? How is this done?
Sulmona,,you may be right but It seems like I remember it being a special surprise on the monthly disc but I guess it was canceled... lol... that reminds me of the limited edition Dc Xmas' Nights one level demo that was going to be built on the sa engine as a xmas' surprise from sonic team ..whhh memories... Can you imagine how rare an item like that would be today?

 How often is it that we hear this. Playing DC games that were ripped and redistrubuted on a CD-R as backups cause your DC laser to work harder than it was meant to (since the data isn't built on a GD-ROM as the program intended it to be) but the majority of the homebrew releases cause no more damage than a commercial DC game does. Using ANY disc in ANY disc based system slowly breaks it down (same as using ANY cartridge in ANY cartridge based system). Again, most of the homebrew community knows how to write stuff where it won't be a problem. The only homebrew release I've seen any problems with was an older build of Doom DC.

LOL LOL LOL
Really? Dan Lossen will be very surprised to hear that!
Dreamcasts were MADE TO READ CD-Rs! If you use one in your system it will do no more damage than a GD-ROM. In other words, no damage at all.

Using a CD-R does not break your system. If that were true then mine should have died years ago.

It wasn't ever intended to be an "official" release, as far as I know. It was only supposed to be on a demo, and then... well... ;)

Thanks everyone, and yes I've explained this time and time again...
Sega built in MIL-CD compatibility because it was a FEATURE for developers to use to test their games immediately. Unfortunately or fortunately, depending on how you look at it, the hacker community got ahold of that knowledge and suddenly everyone started sailing the seven seas.
Of course, it allowed for the independant scene, which is why we've seen Bleem, Feet of Fury, Maqiupai, Inhabitants and (on Thursday) Cool Herders. So it wasn't all bad, and it means that in 2006 there could be more than a dozen new games released for it. It just wasn't good for Sega.
But, as mentioned, the burning out thing was a thing that Sega made up to stop piracy. The Dreamcast laser moves around more for some pirated copies, but as any disc based drive is intended to do, this doesn't harm it any more than doing anything else with it.
My main Dreamcast has logged HUNDREDS of hours playing almost strictly CDs. It has never, ever had a problem with it. I know many, many people who have systems with similiar amounts of logged CD time on them (developers, thank you very much) and I have never, ever heard of one dying.

Well id released the original source code which is how the games were ported over. I believe when you download the homebrew versions (i think there are many) you only get the shareware levels included but if you own the full game and/or any mods you can also use those.
Never thought id or someone else was going to release this commercially or on a demo disc. Its great to hear they were thinking of xmas nights though

 Right. Oddly enough, it hasn't happened to me yet, or to anyone I know, ever. I never understood the logic of this rumor, how could *reading* a disc cause a laser to screw up? It either works, or it doesn't.
