View Full Version : NeoGeo CD speed

I know that the Neo Geo CD only have a 1x (single speed) CD-ROM drive. Is this the only reason why the loading is so slow? Would it be possible to modify one of these machines and insert a faster CD-ROM drive?
From what I've read its not only a drive issue but a ram one as well. And you could theoreticly put a faster drive in it, but you have to change a lot of things to get it to work right.

That's pretty much your answer right there, AFAIK.

One of the Neo CD systems is 2x...
Forget which...

Nope the CDz has more ram not a faster drive. It did help but not by much.

Not double speed...? I checked out a bunch of sites, they said it was 2x, but it seems this was just an unconfirmed rumor...huh...here's what Wikipedia said:
Popular rumor suggests that SNK made several changes to the CD hardware to end up with the CDZ, most prominent is the rumor that they increased the CD-ROM drive speed from 1x to 2x. The truth of the matter is that the CDZ system was internally identical to the outgoing model, save for the fact that it had a larger amount of internal system memory, creating more temporary storage memory within the system and thus reducing load times by minimizing the need to read from game discs for level information. Despite the reduced the load times, they weren't reduced enough to make a notable difference. In addition to this, the console has a design flaw that causes it to overheat after certain periods of time, breaking the console in the process and making it hard to repair.

I still want one though...
Guess you'll have to settle for emulation then...

You can use a dreamcast (with emulation) to play NeoGeo CD games. I haven't tried it, but I read that the speed was much better. (games might have glitches since the 2 emulators are still being worked on)

NEVER, but NEVER change the cd driver from your Neo Geo CD, i know, it´s a very slow machine and i hate that stupid monkey with the "loading" bar, but you could broke the console forever...think about that, unless you have another machine and you want to try...

Are these newer emulators? I tried something a year or so ago and I could never get the darn thing to work. I've also got something which claims to be a PS2/Neo CD emulator but again I never got it to work.

There are 2 emulators currently being worked on. I haven't tried them myself (don't have any NeoGeo CD games), but as I understand it they're really close to fullspeed. The loading times for the games are much better running on the Dreamcast.
As always www.dcemulation.com is the best place to find out more about this kind of thing, and the direct links to the projects are:

There is even an AES emulator that just sprung up as well!! But that one seems to be in the early stages.

the latest emulator which I've heard works the best is neo4all beta4. I'm still using beta2 which has a couple of things not right with it which i've been informed have been fixed for beta4. from the same team is neo4all/aes which I haven't checked out. Its a fork from the cd emu code and apparantely runs quite well. The problem with this is that large games have to have prefetch info and they've only done this for a handful of games so far (including SVC Chaos and Art of Fighting)

I always have to scratch my head at this...either the console's using a hardware hack to allow it to get the game to load more data, or the games themselves were programmed with the ability to load more data in mind...but now that I think about it, that doesn't really make sense as you only have the same amount of data for a level in a CD game. Must be a sort of prefetch.
Hmmm, I thought the CDz had a 2X cdrom drive. I did a search and some places claim it's a single while others maintain it's a double.
Regardless I had one and had no problem with the load times during the games I had. Loading up took a little while (30-60 seconds) but after that it was perfect...at least on the games i had.

I've tried Neo4all and the load times are almost non existant. I've only tried some of the smaller games but still I didn't notice any load times!
