View Full Version : Games with "controller test"

I just picked up a used SNES controller last night and to test it I poped in Space Megaforce as this game has a test option to test the controllers. This is very handy to test that the buttons are working properly.
Another game that I know of is Ordyne for TG16. I have used this test to find out where my duo controllers are having issues and whatnot.
Question: Is there any other games for other consoles that have a similar style test? These games would be well worth having just to test your controllers and I'd like to find other games with them for various consoles across the board. Thanks!

I think Gyromite (NES) had a controller test option...

That is handy, I never knew there were games with test options in them. I'll have to pick some up. Thanks for the info.

7800 Ninja Golf has a hidden joystick test. :)

This is a bitchin' idea for a topic. It would be handy to know games with controller test menus.
Super Monkey Ball on GC has a test for the main analog stick. F-Zero GX also has a test of some sort.

Gauntlet 4 for Genesis, as I recall.

This is something that should be standard for all modern systems.
I'd like to have something like this for PS1/PS2, even if it's homebrew.

What good does this function? It doesnt take long to test if a controller works or not without any controller test :)

You talk a lot of bollocks. Next time try contributing to a thread instead of scoffing at it. If you can't resist, don't type anything at all - I'd prefer silence to your useless banter.

Uh.. lol? I ask a serious question and you say im bullshitting? Wierd..
If this thread is just to gather a list of games with controller test, fine, but I still wonder if this function does something spesial or if you can just test the controller normaly.

Not all games use all buttons, some use them only sparingly, and you might not be able to easily diagnose things like jittery or stuck buttons and the like. That's why a genuine controller test is so much more convenient.

Ye, thats true :) It would be cool if all consoles had a own cart/disc with just controller/hardware test.
For NES controllers i usualy use Chip & Dale when I test. That game uses all the buttons.

Well as I stated in the first post, I bought a USED controller, and rather than find a game that utilizes every single button, I used a game that has a specific test option that registers the button functionality in a quick simple test. The test in Space Megaforce shows every button on the screen and lights up when pressed. If it doesn't light up, the button is not regestering. Simple. I would like to know of a PS/PS2 game with such a test as I would rather not find a game that uses all 10 buttons, both analog sticks and the d-pad to test a controller. Honestly how many games use the select button....
Had I had any problems following the test of the SNES controller I simply would have returned it for an exchange/refund. Fast simple easy.

It looks like someone thought that my post was negative ment, but it was not. It was a serious question. I just wondered if a controllertest did something diffrent than just find a game that uses all buttons. But I got the answer now, thanks for that :)
We Love Katamari have some kind of controller test if Im not mistaken. When you play tutorial you see the buttons you push, or maybe I'm thinking of another game..

There is a controller test disc for Dreamcast, i presume it's a homebrew thing. however most will run a burned CD just fine.

I can remember that ren and stimpy on the genesis had a controller test in it.

The drivers I use for an Xbox controller connected to my PC includes a setup app (used for programming it) that allows you to test everything on the controller, including both rumble motors. It even tests the pressure sensitivity of the buttons (which hardly any games use), not just the triggers: when you press a button gradually, the light that comes on fades into view instead of coming on right away.
There's also the Windows "game controllers" item under Control Panel. This should allow you to check to see if the controller works if you have a different controller connected such as a Dual Shock. It won't let you test the rumble, but for buttons, D-pad, and at least one analog stick it would suffice.
I would assume that if the controller works on a PC it would work on a console.

I've tried Q-bert on NES, as far as I remember, it only tests it so you can decide which way to control qbert (diagonally or right left up down on your pad) I'll have to try it again
I hate testing controllers. What are really a paid are NES advantages, not only do you have 2 big a and b buttons that get stuck a lot, you have the two Turbos and switches, slow motion, start select, and THEN you gotta switch it to 2nd player to test that! @_@

Kendo Rage (SNES) does. For some reason I keep thinking Run Saber or Super Valis IV has one, but I'm not 100% sure on those 2.

It's not a post about "I use this game to test my controllers."
I think it's a thread about hidden or not programmed controller tests. Anyone care to summarize which controller tests can be confirmed and how to access them?
I love controller tests, rather than using games to test. I'm a big fan of the 2600 test cart by Paul Slocum:

If only it could test Genesis and other 9 pin controllers too.

Here is how to access the option menu in Ordyne. (I just copied this from Gamefaqs.
Secret Test Mode
At the title screen, hold down Run while pressing Select six times, then release. Hold down I, II, Up and Left, then press Run. Press Select and Run simultaneously to reach each part of the Secret Test Mode. You can access a Sound Test, select your starting stage and your starting number of ships, among other things.
The "among other things" is test for the controllers. It shows the numbers 1-5 as in the 5 slots for the turbo tap. then below that is the controller lay out to test your controllers.

I'm just bumping this as I had found a controller test in:
Contra: Hard Corps for the Sega Genesis.
It works for 6 button controllers and also checks the mode button. It also allows for the checking of the player two controller.
Its is contained in the options menu.

Looney Tunes B-Ball for SNES had a test menu.
(though it would also tell you if you sucessfully entered a code for one of the many secret power-ups)

I don't understand why its useful for digital controllers either, but it comes in very useful for analog devices, like adjusting the analog sticks on Atari 5200 controllers after repairs and so on.

I suppose the screen calibration test is an offshoot of this.

Although it isn't specifically a test option, the single player pause menu in GoldenEye has a screen that easily lets you test all buttons. I figured I would mention this since it is what I use and I didn't see any N64 games with test menu's mentioned.
