First off, I have to rant and say that I am 100% against any kind of this activity in an MMO. Buying money offline, or essentially paying anything extra to recieve in-game MMO benefits is plain wrong.

Somewhere in the latest issue of Gamepro magazine was an ad for some powerlevelling and money buying company. I don't remember the name of the company, although I did read it about three times just to make sure I was reading what I thought I was reading. Sure enough, smack dab in the middle of one of the biggest magazines about games had an ad promoting all of this crap. I simply could not believe they were endorsing something not just morally wrong but even illegal . Surely they know nearly all user end license agreements prohibit any kind of this activity. More than just that, though, many people will use the services based only on that ad. "Oh it's not wrong, Gampro had an ad for it!" as I strangle their pimply little pale necks. I'm simply disguisted that games where no one can have an advantage due to non-game reasons could be so horribly corrupted and endorsed by main-stream media.

There won't be any big parent support for this kind of cause. The ad didn't feature naked women or swear words so they could care less. Now if they want to shut little Timmy up about his hard times in Everquest they can just buy him a few thousand platt for Christmas. I know fellow moral MMOers know this rant and probably sick and tired of it, but when it goes this far I can't help but post about it.
rant = over

You don't have to agree with it, but it's not illegal.

Bubba: What'cha in for?
Botter: Powerleveling to 60 in 24 hours in WoW!

No, violating an EULA might cost you your account, but the cops won't be showing up.

On a personal level, I don't even see this as cheating. If you want to buy a billion in-game gold for real-world money, knock yourself out. Want someone to powerlevel you, go crazy. Whatever enhances your enjoyment of the game. Hell, someone gave me a sword in Guild Wars, did I break the rules by accepting it. Or how about all the stuff I gave away? Am I a criminal?

Not illegal, but still disturbing. We'll have to wait for more cases of virtual theft to appear before some laws get put in place...I imagine some developers would want rules such as those that apply for gambling, because the whole point of some games (i.e. EVE Online) is to grab stuff that isn't yours.
