what is needed to play imports on a US Saturn? Serious question.

Thanks in advance.

One of the easiest ways to play imports on your US Saturn, is find a 5 in 1 Action Replay cart (which has your convertor, Memory Cart, 4MB RAM Cart, and 1MB RAM Cart in one whole package) the 5th is the Action Replay, but I honestly wouldnt worry about the cheat feature, since Saturn games never really worked right with GameShark or Action Replay...

Reason why I wouldnt recommend a 4 in 1 because they usually have one of those features missing...

ST Key + chip for copies

An St-Key is not the way to go as it is not a memory card. Get an Action replay 4-1 plus which is a memory card, RAM card and allows the play of import games.

Another option would be to install a region switch on your unit. This is simply a mater of soldering wires across jumpers. You should proably have no problem finding more info on google.

To play copies you don't need a chip and I don't even know if one exists. All you have to do is adjust the laser which is also documented on other sites and findablke on google.

They definitely do exist, as it's quite difficult to trick a Saturn into playing CDRs without it. It does some multi-step disc authentication nonsense that's almost impossible to fool via swap tricking (on a v2 console, at least).

Action Replay 4+1 plus a mod chip for a 21 pin Saturn is the way to go. Saturn mod chips are easy to find and require 1 solder wire to be soldered to a chip. That's it. You can solder the wire going to the powersupply for good measure but you don't have to :)

Would this work or does it have to be a 4 in 1?

Yeah, adjust the laser. Huh? Only thing I've ever heard about that is it's a good way to mess up your Saturn.

That's not true at all. The swap trick on an SS in very easy. The laser just moves to the opposite edge of the CD, verifies that it is legit, and then moves back. All you have to do is swap discs right after verification. You don't even need something to hold the door sensor down.

Because on that site its $29 but I can get it on ebay for $18 from a seller I have done business with before.

You have to tape a door switch on the inside of the Saturn, otherwise it just stops the disc as soon as you open the door. And I've heard the swap trick can be done on the v1 Saturn (oval buttons), but in my experience, it's pretty much impossible to time it right on the v2 (round buttons).

The best way is to chip your Saturn to play backups. The mod is the easiest one out there if you have a model 2 and only costs $16. After that just rip the iso off your disc and use a simple program to convert the region code. Then just burn a backup with the converted iso.It sounds like a lot but its really easy once you get it down and it keeps your original import in its case where its safe.

http://www.racketboy.com/retro/2005/02/modify-saturn-to-read-cd-rw-media.html is a link to a site that talks about adjusting the laser. I am knowledgable about the saturn, but don't care much for the hacking of them. I installed a switch so i can play import games and thats about all I care to know. Respect the people who worked hard to make great games and buy the real thing.

the modchip wont work with all v2 Saturns. Mine's one of them

about that link:
"At 5/20/2005 9:49 PM, Anonymous said…

Is that with or without a modchip?

At 5/22/2005 6:25 PM, racketboy said…

Yeah, you'll need a modchip"

it only tweaks the laser to read RWs better

The easiest way that I play imports is just buy a Japanese Saturn. It looks cool having twin Saturns! My JP one is the grey model 1(oval buttons/access light) and my US is the model 2(round buttons).

The truth is that I have heard that the 4-1, 5-1, aftermarket memory cart, can corrupt the cartridge slot. The boards are of larger size when compared to the offical (sega) memory cart. I have a friend who has two Saturns with bad cart slots due to the use of a Performance mem cart and the other from use of a action replay cart.

The alternative--install a region toggel switch if you are into hacking your consoles. My personal preferance is to keep my consoles stock, but you may choose to modify should it suit you better. Info on where to solder the jumpers can be easily located via google.

yeah- mod chips on 64 pin saturns wont work even if they are model 2...

Lan-kwei sells a modchip that can do imports too supposeably... the instructions look like a hassle though

I asked about this too awhile back in the technical forum. I have a "chipped" model 2 that plays CD-Rs just fine; as well as JAP games. What I've been wondering though.. is if my modded NTSC/US Saturn will play PAL games (barring any output signal problems on a US TV). I haven't got a straight answer on that yet.

I have a few PAL games that came in lots that I bought. Most of them are versions of games that are more rare and expensive to find in NTSC form; but I'm too lazy to dig up my Saturns, and try them out.

BTW.. I have an ST Key I've been trying to sell lately with no luck. I used it on my Model 1 Saturn to play JAP games.. but now I have a white JAP model 2.. so it's unecessary.

Most PAL games will play fine on an NTSC saturn with an NTSC TV.

it's not that bad on the v2... all you got to do is listen for the correct verification movement from the drive.. the v1 is a tad easier as you can just use the lights to your advantage, but the v2 has the sound :D

the adjustment of the laser is so it will play cdrw not cdr.And yes you need a mod chip to play either(unless you use the swap method).Look inside your Saturn to verify it is the proper model for the mod chip and if it is get one from racketboy. Then when you burn a backup of your game you can convert the region code to North America. The original can be from any country including a pal game.

TWINKLE STAR SPRITES!!! Probably the best version of this fantastic competitive shootie!

Ok its actually published by ADK but the franchise was made famous on the Neo Geo. And SNK Playmore currently owns the rights to this franchise.
