I'll play:
Consoles:
SNES: Christmas present back in 92. My sister also got one, which I later took.
Playstation: Christmas 97. Saw Final Fantasy VII, knew I had to own that system. PS1 combo was a birthday present a few years back.
N64: Following year for Christmas. Had to have Ocarina of Time. Too bad I ended up with a gray cart version. I also have another N64 which is located in a Pokemon Snap Station taken from Blockbuster, when I worked there.
Dreamcast: Originally a Christmas gift, that I returned because I though Sonic Adventure sucked. Later re-bought for RE: CV.
Playstation 2: Bought on launch day. Then I purchased a progressive scan model when they were released. Recieved a white import system from Christmas one year.
Gamecube: Bought on launch day. Gift from my mom.
Xbox: Purchased after Christmas due to the fact I asked for one, but didn't get it.
NES: Given to me by Oobgarm. Toploader.
Genesis: Given to me by Gamestop. Nasty system, that I cleaned up. Model 1.
Sega CD: Given to me by a assistant manager at another Gamestop who had a crush on me.
Saturn: Purchased off Oobgarm in order to play Albert Odyssey.
Handhelds:
Gamegear: Christmas gift....
Gameboy Color: Birthday present one year. Purchased with Link's Awakening DX.
Gameboy Advance: Purchased pink system when it was released. Given a white one by my sister who "didn't want it."
GBA SP: Bought close to launch.
DS: Last year's Christmas present from my parents.
PSP: Bought at launch.
Neo Geo Pocket: Bought somewhere in a bundle....
Gameboy: Adopted it after it was abandoned at Gamestop.

Hmm... interesting topic, let's see...
NES (original toaster): given to me by my neighbor in Jan. 89
NES (top loader): Christmas 93 from the parents
Sega Genesis: Christmas 94, once again from the parents
PS1 (original): Christmas 97, parents... subsequently stolen during my freshman year of college
Atari 2600: flea market, sometime in summer 99
PS1 (redesigned version): around Sept. 2000 when it was released... my friend fried it trying to put in a mod chip later on
SNES: flea market, summer 2001 I think
N64: used at EB, summer 2001 also
Gamecube: used at EB, summer 2002
PS2: I think Gamestop online, got a free copy of Vice City with it, summer 2003
I think that's about it.

Ok, here's how it went for me... some of these are approximations and guesses
Atari 2600 - Was my Grandma's - give to me in 1992/93 age 3/4
NES - Was my Grandma's - given to me in 1992 age 3/4
Apple IIE - This never belonged to me, but Dad brought it home from 1990-93
Tandy PC with Windows 3.1, 4 MB of ram, and 78 mhz processor - parents bought brand new from Radio Shack for around $1500 I think around '93 or '94... My main concern was "Will it play solitaire?!" (age 4)
Game Gear - brand new from Mom and Dad, Christmas of prolly 95 or 96... guess it was older than I thought at the time - I just looked it up and it was released in 90! I had no clue... anyway, I love this thing!
N64 - the Christmas right after it was released, brand new from Mom and Dad...
PSX - bought used for myself from eBay around 2002
HP Pavilion desktop computer 1.3 ghZ, 256 MB's of ram... upgraded... brand new from mom and dad, Christmas 2002
GBA - bought used for myself from EB Games around 2002/2003
Sega Genesis - bought for myself used from eBay... have since picked up several used... got my first one approximately 2002/2003
Gamecube - bought new for myself sometime just before the price drop to $100... I paid $150... I think approximately 2002/2003...
SNES - bought used for myself from eBay, around 2003
GBA SP - Christmas 2004 brand new from Mom and Dad...
Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop - brand new, customized to my liking, paid for by Grandma and Grandpa for this Christmas... I got it in November...
That's about it... I'm sure I'm missing lots, but those are the big highlights...

My timeline: (i'm 23 years old now)
NES -Christmas 1988
Game Boy B&W - October 1992, dad bought me one from Montgomery Ward
Super Nintendo -Christmas 1992
Sega Master System - Summer 1993 from a TRU sidewalk clearance sale
Genesis 2 -Christmas 1993
Sony Playstation - Christmas 1995
Sega 32X -Christmas 1996, killed off my Genesis 2
Nintendo 64 -Christmas 1997
Sega Saturn -My Birthday 1998, several months after its death.
Sega Genesis model 1 - January 2000 4 years after the 32X curse, bought a set from Funcoland for 15 bucks.
Sega CD -Spring 2000, it's a long story. In 1998, my friend and I swapped Genesis and SNES for sometime. The Sega CD in which we thought was broken was included. I was curious that if it really did work so I put another AC adapter in, and voila! it worked.
Turbografx 16 - October 2000 traded my import copy of Dragon Ball Z Ultimate Battle 22 for a set.
Sega Dreamcast -Christmas 2000
Game Boy Advance - June 2001, one of the first to get one.
Playstation 2 - Bought it ON September 10, 2001 a day before you know what....February 5, 2005, that same PS2 went under the knife for its passport to Japanese gaming.
Neo Geo Pocket Color -sometime in 2002
Nintendo Gamecube -Summer 2002, sold this past spring
Neo Geo AES and Neo Geo CD -October 2002
XBox -January 2003, no longer had one as of this past May
Sachen QBoy - Fall 2003. actually a Famicom clone. the controller ports were screwing up
PC Engine Duo -January 2004. sadly it died within a matter of months. Not even a force such as "omnedon" could save it. R.I.P., it's ok, you did your best!
Game Gear -sometime in 2004, member "Ghouls N'Ghosts" sold me one for 15
Super Famicom System - April 2005, my SFC system, accompanied with a boxed Rockman 7, made its pilgrimage from Osaka, Japan to Prince George, Virginia.
PC Engine Duo-R -May 2005, $175 + my basic Turbografx 16 got me back on the Turbo/PC Engine saddle thanks to D-Lite.
And that's it. 8-)

This is a good question but I probably have no clue for most of my systems...
Atari 2600--My parents probably gave me my first one. I eventually sold it and when I got one again, I bought it off a guy I found on the internet (probably my first internet console buy).
Atari 5200--Probably bought it new when it first came out but I'm not sure where that may have been at.
Atari Lynx--Can't recall.
Atari Jaguar--I think I may have bought it from a mail order place, possibly Chips & Bits. Are they still around?
ColecoVision--My sister-in-law gave me hers, I bought another at a flea market. Both were within the last 5-7 years, I think.
Sega Genesis--Online auction (not Ebay)
Sega Saturn--Ebay
Sega Dreamcast--Probably eBay but not positive.
PS1--Can't recall where I got my original model, got a PSOne via eBay.
PS2--Not positive but probably Wal-Mart
XBox--Would you believe I honestly can't remember? I'd guess Wal-Mart there, too, though.
Super Nintendo--K-Mart
Nintendo 64--Online trade
GameCube--Wal-Mart
Nintendo DS--Wal-Mart

Cool thread!
Lets see here:
Atari 2600 - My dad bought it in late 1983 during the crash cheap to play Space Invaders. That was pretty much as far as his gaming career went, although he kicked ass with that game.
NES - I bought in about 1989 with money saved for months at a Baseball card show. Super-good deal with the system and five games -- Centipede, Super Mario 1, Duck Hunt, and two others I don't remember but still own. Got a great deal on it. (I was 8, it was a TON of money at the time at $50.00 I believe.)
SNES - 1995 (I think). Christmas gift as I really, really wanted Donkey Kong Country. Got the Mario set and Donkey Kong Country seperately. Was SORELY disappointed by Mario World. Still kinda am (sorry folks!)
Jaguar - 1996 from online. I had never thought it came out.
N64 - 1997 (?) from God-knows-where. Some sort of used place. Bought for Earthbound 64.
Neo Geo Pocket - Bought on the day before they got pulled, I forget when that was. I had wanted one all along and didn't have the money. I was worried that they would get very expensive after they got pulled, so I purchased one right away. Looking back, I way overpaid... but it was WAY worth it.
Dreamcast - My birthday in 2001, I think. It was when they were $99.99, and I got the Super Smash Pack version for $119.99 at Best Buy. I still have that exact console.
Xbox - early 2004. Had wanted one for a while. Bought the Halo version.
GameCube 1 - December 2004 with Mario Kart, large memory card and extra controller for $99.99.
GameBoy Advance - (player), mid 2005. Had ONE GameBoy Advance game at the time, didn't pick up more for a long time... and it wasn't a game you'd usually buy a system for - Extreme Ghostbusters.
Nintend DS - November 2005. Had four games for it before I bought it, and by the end of the week I bought it on, I had about 16. Quickest growing game library I've ever had.

1st of each type only:
-Atari 2600, Santa, Christmas 1981, gift
So we do have something in common! That was a milestone Christmas. My parents, through their generosity, screwed my wallet for life (and theirs until I was old enough to get a job).

First SNES - Bought it on September 9th 1995 for $209. All my own birthday and pocket money went into it's purchase. Came with Super Mario All-Stars and bonus controller. Sold it less than two years later.
Now for the stuff I still own:
Nintendo 64 - Bought from Southside Video Games (one of few privately owned game stores in my city that has since shut down) on August 30th 1997 for $189. Traded my SNES and 5 games for $150 value towards it.
Atari Lynx - Bought preowned at a Cash Converters for $40 back in November 1997.
Game Boy Color - Christmas present 1998.
Sega Game Gear - Grandfather found it in my cousin's rubbish bin, gave it to me and said: "here you work it".
Game Boy Advance - Birthday present (August 28th 2001).
Atari 2600 Jr. - Acquaintance at school and his friends were trying to smash a Pac-Man cart by dropping a concrete bench on top of it. It didn't break! I told that I'd have it, and he told me there was a console and games to go with it. Next day he brought it to school and gave it to me for free. About 2 years later, after we'd left school, I'd heard that he was trying to contact me because he wanted it back. Fortunately, the friends of mine that he contacted didn't give him my number or address. :D
Nintendo GameCube - Bought on the Australian May 17th 2002 launch day along with Wave Race, Star Wars, Mem Card and extra controller for like, $500 or something. Biggest mistake ever.
Second SNES - Found in complete (box/manual/sealed bags) in EB for $20. Yellowed, but in excellent condition.
NTSC Nintendo 64 - November 2002, bought it for $60 at Cash Converters. Included Majora's Mask (with holo label), Pokemon Stadium 2 (not for resale cart) and Banjo-Tooie.
First NES - $20 at Cashies in December 2002. Got Bionic Commando with it - UGH!
Sony PlayStation 2 - Bought for $395 in December 2002. Came with World Rally Championship.
First Sega Dreamcast - Bought for $120 at Cashies in January 2003. Kept randomly resetting. Turned out it was FULL of cigarette ash. Disassembled entirely and completed sanitised. Worked perfectly ever since. Bought Sega Rally 2 with it.
First Sega Saturn - $40 at Cashies in Feb 2003 (model 2). Bought Hi-Octane (awful) and Sega Rally (awesome) with it.
Sega Mega Drive II + Sega Mega CD II combo set - June 2003, $50 perfect condition, boxed (looked unused). Included Road Avenger.
Sega Master System II - July 2003, free off a family friend with 7 games.
Microsoft Xbox - Birthday present (Aug 28th 2003)

Second NES - Mint unused, $5 at Good Sammy's (April 2004)
Sega Master System - console only, $3 at Good Sammy's (Sept 2004)

Super Famicom - console only, $20 from Good Sammy's (Nov 2004)
Second Sega Game Gear - bought as a replacement from original GG which died. $75 off eBay. Then it broke pretty quickly but I cannabalised it for parts and got my old one working again. Probably one of my worst purchases however.

Atari 7800 - $5 from Sunday Markets (April 2005)

I guess '02 was my busiest year getting game systems. Since then it's become more concentration of getting games for those systems. I plan on continuing to get older consules as they become available at the pawn shops and thrift stores, but til then I may start buying some new game consules and get a few games (All new to support current makers).
Back in late 2004 Cash Converters thought Dreamcasts prices crashed so they sold them for $10 each so got 2 extras incase one breaks down in the future.

Odyssey 200: Christmas gift.
Atari VCS: Christmas gift.
ColecoVision: Varied over the years. Mostly garage sales.
Atari 7800: Purchased it myself. Would not have done so, if Joust for the CV had been completed and released back in 1983.
Atari 5200: Garage sale (village-wide). Only One I've ever seen so far.
Genesis: Given to me if I could get it to work properly. Did, but I returned it; the 16-Bit era does not appeal to me.

Gameboy Color: Second-hand store, for $4.00. Have yet to find a really GOOD game for it.

NES - The first one was an action set (with SMB/Duck Hunt, 2 controllers, and a Zapper) given to me as a birthday present in 1989. I remember that my mom bought it at the Montgomery Ward at Mall 205. It was sold in the mid 90s with all the games I owned at the time.
My current NES, also a toaster, was given to me last November by a friend as a late birthday gift.
Genesis - I bought a Sega Genesis 2 in April 2004 from fellow DP'er y-bot along with 2 6-button controllers, Sonic The Hedgehog, Golden Axe II, Monopoly, and Altered Beast for around $20 or so. y-bot lives in the Portland area and I bought everything in person. To this day, he's the only DP'er I've met in person, and he's a pretty cool guy.
Super NES - I got it for my 11'th birthday in 1993, brand new and bundled with Super Mario World and 2 controllers. I believe she got it at a Fred Meyer. I still own it, and it hasn't yellowed! :)
Nintendo 64 - Bought this from a friend of mine in early 2004 along with several games, including Goldeneye, Pokemon Stadium and a handful of wrestling titles. The wrestling games got traded off later, since I had no interest in any of them.
PlayStation 2 - For my birthday in 2000, my dad gave me a $400 Toys R' Us gift card to purchase a PS2 when it launched, along with some games. However, I never got around to preordering the console at TRU and missed out on getting it at launch. In early 2001, I heard that PS2's were back in stock, and so my mom and I headed out to the Clackamas TRU and got one, along with Crazy Taxi, and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, Simpsons Wrestling, and Final Fantasy 8 for the PlayStation.
Gamecube - I bought a Jet Black console with one controller in February 2004 for $70 used at a CD/Game Exchange. I also bought a copy of the Zelda Collector's Edition for $20 used at a GameStop the same day.
Game Boy Advance My first GBA was silver and purchased at a CD/Game Exchange in the summer of 2004 for $35, along with R-Type DX for the GBC for $6. In early 2005, I sold it and got a new GBA SP for $79.99 at a Best Buy.

An excelent thread that I some how missed for quite a few months.
Atari2600: (Heavy Sixer) It was in the house already when I was born in 1980.
Atari 7800: Replaced the dead 2600 sometime around 1986 i'd venture to guess.
NES: Birthday present in 87..88?? from my Grandpa.
GameGear: Xmas present sometime in the early 90's.
Sega Genesis: High School Promotion present in spring of 94.
N64: Either birthday or Xmas present somewhere around 96
PlayStation: Xmas present from an Ex-Girlfriend and her mom in 99. I got it, FF VIII and Bio Freaks...
PS2: Got it just after it became easier to get, so April 01.
NGPC: Just before the launch of the GBA, instead of the GBA because I decided I didn't want a GBA.
GBA: Got at launch, because i'm crazy.
GB Color: Bought it complete boxed off my manager for 20 bucks just after I got my GBA.
GameCube: Got it on Launch in Nov 01.
XBox: Bought numerous ones at launch and sold them off, got mine Jan 02.
GBAsp: Got it 2 days after Launch, returned the next day and then got a new one due to a dead D-pad.
3DO: Got it from a friend who got it for 2 bucks in summer 02.
Atari Jaguar: A different friend gave it to me just after I got the 3DO.
Dreamcast: Spring 04 just before my Indy game shop closed its doors for good.
PlayStation Debugger: I got my first one in Summer 04 at CGE thanks to DarthVader.
**Toss in a few more PlayStation Debuggers and a Neo Geo AES that i've been babysitting since CGE.**
Nintendo DS: Got it at launch.
Sony PSP: 1 Year anniversary Present, in April 06.
That should be about it... not counting the DC, Cube, PS2, GBA, and DS's that ive given to friends as presents and such and the various NGPC's and DC's that I've gotten in lots for specific games, that were sold off as fast as possible.
