I was considering painting my genesis model 2 and possibly a controller, probably something like a burnt orange or a bright blue. I really have no clue as to go about this as far as what kind of paint to use.

If anyone could be of help, it would be greatly appreciated. The reason i'm doing this is because I need a project to work on when I'm on winter vacation. And if it comes out well enough, i'll charge my friends ripoff prices to paint their systems for them, hehehe

Try Krylon Fusion, it's made specifically for plastics. I've used it on a few things and it works pretty well.

Or, paint for plastic models should work well, too.

I second those two. The Krylon Fusion is great. I lightly sanded the plastic before I sprayed, it came out grrrreat.

I painted my yellowed SNES (ironically) orange, using Krylon Fusion, and it turned out fine. I didnt sand, either.

I wasn't sure where else to post this.

I used enamel spray paint from a hardware shop. I probably just need to lacquer it now.

Edit:
Here it is finished with a matt lacquer.

WOW! Very nice!

I have question for you. Was the plastic black, and you just painted it blue? Or did you prime it white, then color it blue?

I had a black Dell laptop that I painted green and it didn't come out as bright as I wanted it too. So I primed it white, then painted it green and it was alot brighter.

Just wondering for future reference.

Fibblewith that looks good. Really good.

A lot more well done then the one i painted! Same color, But i didn't paint the buttons (Or the area where the buttons are) and i just left the oval dome black.

I should probably have used primer but I just painted straight onto the black plastic after lightly scuffing it with some fine sandpaper. I masked over the bits that are still black.

The buttons on the PAL Mega Drive 2 are red. I took them off before I painted it.

I forgot about that. But how did you take them off?

I've always used automotive primer and automotive paint for consoles, but all the custom paintjobs i have were done using hand painted acrylic...

I like to use vinyl color. It's kinda like paint but its not. But I heard krylon fusion works well too.

I'm going to be painting my Genny tonight, and I am curious as to how easy the buttons can be removed, as well as how exactly to do it.

Also, what's the easiest way to keep the cart slot from catching any of that paint? Same goes for the black ring as seen in the pic above.

Thanks!

To begin with you need to dissassemble everything, don't try painting your console without taking it apart. Buttons and slider switches usually are pressed out from the inside by squeezing a pair of clips together, study them for a moment and you'll figure it out quickly. Genesis systems have their cartridge slot doors held in place by a retainer assembly, it unscrews and is removable. (don't loose the dust door springs!)

I usually use blue painter's tape to mask off areas and haven't had any problems yet. Good luck and post pictures once you're done!

Thanks for the tips! I'll definitely post pictures when it's done. I'll probably airbrush it with some extra goodies once I'm satisfied with the base color. I'll be sure to post pictures or a video somewhere when it's done. Thanks again. Also, can you PM me about a hardmod? I've seen you mention them, and you seem the most knowledgable about the inner workings.
