I've been around the block I can honestly say now.

Started with Phantasy Star Online on dreamcast then went to Everquest, Ultima Online, Runescape, Dark Age of Camelot, World of Warcraft, City of Heroes/Villians, Everquest 2, and most recently Eve Online.

The original Phantasy Star Online for Dreamcast was great, cause well, you could steal peoples weapoins and money, hehe. It got bad once the hackers took over.

Everquest, was and still is good. Too bad they have got rid of player looting on PvP. A viable option for classic nostalgic gameplay, and the game still has charm.

Ultima Online, is dead, so, great while it lasted right...

Runescape, is still the best free MMO out there imo. I would rather play it than Guild Wars. Mainly cause you can kill people and steal their stuff, hehe.

Dark Age of Camelot, ok I didn't play this long. I only played the demo and well. It bored me to tears.

World of Warcraft, Oh man. I loved this game at first. No load times, dcent PvP "not great", coool bosses. What can be said? It was fun while it lasted, but at level 40 it started getting real boring. There are many broken elements to this game now that i've been there and done that. The biggest being server downtime, login errors, and most of all grouping. It's just too damn hard to group and the community isn't the best.

City of Heroes/Villains, good game. Good community. Good idea. Bad execution. Missions get boring and there just isn't a whole lot to do. Oh well, nice try. PvP was fun in a deathmatch way.

Everquest 2, great game. The lore makes everquest 2 shine. Missions are interesting, community is great, and options are pretty vast. If only they added PvP then it would be close to being the best, as it stands its one of the best choices out there imo. But.....Unfortunately there is a much better game.......

Eve Online, wow. What can be said? From missions, to community, to complete package execution this game has it all! Great community, great gameplay, massive scope, and PvP, oh PvP, only the best PvP implemented in an online game ever....Factions, federations, corporations.....you screw with one you better know what your doing or you pay the price, but the option is there to screw with whoever you want and thats what makes it the mutts nuts. Steal someones ship, cargo, or just blast them away. Attack a spacestation and get blown away, or maybe not ;). This is not a game it's a space symphony. and intense fights turn into a beautiful orchetrations of decimal points. I love this game. Wait, no, I am this game. It has balls.

Another cool thing is Eve Online plays itself while you are offline. No grinding, just skill teachings and some take a looooong time, but they level up even if you aren't online. Ingenious. Brilliant I say.

Anyway maybe some new MMO players out there will benefit from my journeys and gather something from my post. Then again maybe not. I just wanted to at least state my opinion on where I stand after playing almost all of them.

I kind of like Project Entropia, for the simple fact you are playing with and can earn real money. I started playing it after I read about a guy who bought a space station in the game for $250,00. I tried it out for a bit but since I have high speed lite it lags to much and had to quit till I upgrade. The best part it is free.

But I will always love UO. It was my first mmorpg and rocks.

PSO still lives, and if you haven't played is since Dreamcast, you're missing out on Episode II, and now, Episode IV.

http://www.psobb.com/index.php software is free, 9 bucks a month.

Nothing tops Motor City Online...it's a shame it's dead :( I'd kill an army of infants if it ment that someone would code up a functional Motor City Online server emulator instead of wasting time on stuff like Everquest, Star Wars Galaxy, and World of Warcraft server emulators :(

Neocron 2 would be totally ace if it had more people playing it...for shame. That game is flippin' rad, but with the population the way it is right now, the early game is just a sewer grind with very little emphasis on teamwork and any meaningful missions (unless you sign up with a bunch of friends).

Asheron's Call 2 was pretty awesome too, but it suffered from lack of population as well (which especially hurt it since there were no NPCs, the entire game was player-based). It'll be sad to see the plug pulled on it this month.

so yea, Motor City Online, RIP :(

WoW is the current "best" MMOG, but only from levels 1-60. You can only create so many new characters and repeatedly play through the first 40-60 levels before the novelty wears off. In my opinion, the main detriment to this game is that you level so fast and quests are so easy, that there is no time to get to know other players. People join your group for a specific quest or dungeon then "gotta go". Guilds are basically big chat rooms. This is the anti-EverQuest.

EverQuest was the best only when it was the only viable choice. They have activated old accounts for 21 days, so give it a try and see just how terrible it really is compared to games like WoW. I am not referring to the graphics, either (which coincidentally still run like ass even though they are using a circa-1997 Turok game engine). I spent 4 years of my life with this game and I don't regret it, but this game is R.I.P.

I'm surprised you never tried Final Fantasy XI. It is by far the most polished and complete MMORPG I have ever played. Unfortunately, it is only really fun if you have a static party of friends to play with. Pick-up groups are an absolutely horrible experience.

Keep an eye out for Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, designed by the man with The Vision(tm), Brad McQuaid.

I consider WoW to be the single worst MMO ever created. All WoW does, is simply take existing MMO gameplay concepts, and then water them down, homogenize it some more, and create a very bland yet easy to play game for the masses. It's essentially an MMO made for the lowest common denominator.

Myself and my guild await Vanguard, which should be quite a blast. Couple of my guys are in beta now actually. Designed by the people responsible for Everquest and it's first 2 expansions. (Kunark and Velious) I cannot wait.

well im not a real WoW fan, but did manage to get 2 level 20 characters up in Guild Wars,it just seemed like a more user freindly game even if it was a bit short.

WOW has 1 concept that keeps it on top........it's fun! From 1-60 the first time I had a blast then after leveling a few alts I got bored. It's wierd but that's the game. It's still a "must try" MMO if you are into these games at all.

1 classic great little game that nobody mentioned is Anarchy Online. It's still a great playing game if you want to get away from the fantasy setting. Try it out since the basic game is totally free.

I'm just getting back into EQ2. It's another top MMO worth playing.

My UO account is still active but probably not for long. If you like an item based game or like collecting items then UO is for you. They still have the best housing system in any MMO.

COH/COV is done well but wasn't my cup of tea. Same with EVE which is a good game just not my style (your avatar is a ship not a person)

Vanguard is the next big MMO if they don't screw it up.
DDO is also going to be big but it's a group only game so you will be forced to group to do anything (not solo friendly).

GO to http://mmorpg.com to check all these games out.

I still play UO after all these years. Not as often as I used too, but still get a craving for it every now and then. WOW I hear is one of the best out there. I have yet to try it myself however. Never got into Everquest... Tried it for a few hours and just never went back. Other then that I still find myself attached to many MUDS. ;)

I was shooting a noob outside a space station today with my snowball launcher and he got excited and decided to fire back with real ammo, lol. Concord shot him down and I got his loot, of course that flagged me for him to kill me for the next 15 minutes, but since I stole his guns I didn't think he had much chance.

Not my fault, I was just trying to say Merry Christmas. :hmm:

I'm loving this game to no end. To anyone who has never played it, listen to this "http://www.eve-online.com/download/music/Ambient009.mp3" mp3 of one of the in-game orchestrations. It gives a bit of the vibe of the game.

Here's a link with all the mp3 music from the game. http://www.eve-online.com/download/music/

I also really like this one: http://www.eve-online.com/download/music/Ambient021.mp3

The only MMOG I've played is Guildwars, which I dumped maybe 30hrs into. It was an interesting game and quite fun, but it just got boring to me because it didn't seem fast enough. The graphics are real nice, the gameplay is great, the story line is decent. There's hundreds of skills to learn but you can only have 8 available during gameplay, which you can switch out while in town.

The only 2 I've played is PSO on DC, and FFXI. FFXI is well done, but the problem with it is that you have to rely on groups to do EVERYTHING. You also need 4-6 hours of straight play to really accomplish anything.

I dunno if this has been posted here, but just the sheer fact that stuff like this is possible in this game is an amazing testament to the nearly flawless game design.

Bah, thats the only link I had to it and its dead, and the entire site is dead. Anyways, a year long infiltration coornation into the largest corporation in the game results in the largest MMO in-game heist, resulting in the loss of 30 billion ISK, or about $16,500 USD of ingame assets. It's absolutely amazing that the game allows for such events to occur and really makes me want to check out EVE.
