Are most people on this site more console game based? How many people play computer games too? Don't see many posts about computer games.

This may bring a better response over in the Video Game Forum, so I'm magically transporting it over there.

For the record, I play a lot of computer based games and not just console based. Games like Baldur's Gate and Ultima Online are my favorites, but I am also trying to build up a nice Abandonware/ old DOS games collection. I'm also waiting to get my hands on Sim City 4, but that will be a while yet.

:D

I'm playing Septerra Core and Planescape: Torment right now, but there aren't many PC games that I'm interested in.

Usually, I wait until computer games are dirt cheap before picking them up. I'm currently trying to find one of those $10 Lucasarts reissues of Grim Fandango.

I can't stand computer games, plain and simple.

The only computer games I DO play are MMORPG's (AC2 right now) and Sim games (Warcraft, Starcraft, Simcity) Games that HAVE to be point and click.

I do play UT2K3 too :)

I moved in August and still haven't hooked up my "gaming rig" (such as it is, P3 500 O_O ). This hasn't stopped me from picking up highly recommended and cheap comp games, though (I'm on the Kid Fenris plan)--I just picked up Moonbase Commander for $5.00 (+S&H) from ebgames online (along with a pile of Dreamcast controllers). I've also bought the X-Com collection and Unreal Gold Pack, for example. They wait patiently. One of these days I'll be gaming like it's 1999.

I do....got about a hundred of them. I like some of the old DOS turn based strategy, as well a FPSs and a few RPGs, and some other games. They're just not really collectible or hard to get for the most part, so I never bother to talk about em.

I like computer games but I have a awful time using a keyboard and mouse to control it. I do have a game pad but I like my consoles better.

I play some computer games, but, strangely enough, not on my 2GHz machine. Most of the PC games I play are old DOS titles on floppies that I play in my Tandy 1000HX.

yeah i do play computer games a lot, see i am studying computer science , got a 150mbit connection @university and my athlon 1,9 with GF4 @home, so i am able to play every game i can get ;)

but i mostly play rpgs and mp-shooter (q3,cs,ut,flashpoint....), didn't really get into playing online-rpgs, tried neocron, uo, diablo2 and some others but i didn't have more fun online then i had offline playing diablo2, baldurs gate, gothic ... so i stopped because of the costs of online playing ;)

i also play a lot of old adventures (indiana jones, day of the tentacle, monkey island, simon the sorcerer ....)

Yes, I'm bi.

...

That is, I play both PC and console games. Unfortunately, I haven't liked the direction PC games have gone in recent years, so my time is spent 95/5 in favor of consoles. The next two PC games I hope to play are Wizardry 8 and Deus Ex 2. None of the popular FPS series interest me anymore, which makes me sad. I'm quite the old-school FPS fan, but the new ones suck IMO. Too realistic and "simmy." :/

i have a LOAD of old pc games in a box here- once in a while, i'll go back to and play a few hours of DOS or windows stuff. never did finish daggerfall, anvil of dawn, battlespire, team 47 goman, system shock (man, this is a great game that should have been ported/enhanced for a home system), and a few others. i still have get medieval!, enemy zero, and sys shock installed on my pc, lol...

also, if you're into the older stuff, www.theunderdogs.org is a great download site... :D

I'm a recent convert to console, taking a break from computers so to speak.

Essentaily I was a console fan (but didn't have one) in the pre crash days. Finally got a home system in 1986, the SMS. Moved out couple years later, and took the SMS with me. Eventually got a genny, and then got the SEGACD on release day. After about a year of being frustrated with my SEGACD (don't like FMV games... >:( ) I saw DOOM running on a computer.

DOOM represented the realization of what I'd always fantasized about in games, that I would be able to go "in" to the game, and go where I wished. I sold ALL of my console stuff. Bought a state of the art 486. I knew nothing about computers, and dove in head first. That was 1994 I guess.

During my time being a computer geek I shunned all things console. SHUNNED. Looked down upon. I learned how to build computers, and to set up LANS. I built a LAN in my home so the whole family could play Quake together, on the LAN, and online. My wife and I, and eventually my kids became deadly with the mouse. I taught myself everything I could learn to make my computers do whatever I wished them to do.

Fast forward to 2002. I started getting bored with computer games. Nothing could hold my interest. I got into emulation. Then my brother in law got me and the wife an IntelliVision. It didn't work right, so I dove in, and managed to fix it. Using online guides, and my computer electronics experience, I found I had an affinity for figuring out which part of the console was faulty. It was a lot like computer troubleshooting.

I liked playing the IntelliVision so much, I thought, this needs an Atari 2600 next to it. Once I had that, a ColecoVision seemed like a good idea. I would imagine the rest of you can see where this has lead. :-D I now have ALL of the major consoles, up to modern.

I learned to fix my own used decks and controllers, and I now have a part time business doing it for local game stores. They keep me in parts, and keep their eyes open in finding me things I want for my collection. My soldering skills have improved greatly, all of my hardware works perfectly (and is region modded where possible), and to top it all off, I make a profit doing it all. I spend some money on my collection, but the income from repairs, and repaired finds on Ebay keep me in a positive cash flow.

So, am I computer gamer, or a console gamer? Well, my distant past is all console. My recent past was exclusively computer. I am now, simply, an adult gamer, with no serious prejudices or compunctions against one or the other. PC's have far superior control for RTS and FPS's, and noone will ever convince me otherwise (Halo on the XBOX had me WISHING I could have mouse PLEEEEEASE!). Platformy games (Like Super Mario Sunshine) rock with good analog controllers, and have no equivalent on the PC. They just don't make games like Crazy Taxi for the PC. If you want to be able to play the best games ever made, you have to free yourself from the specific platforms. I've done it, and it's pleased me to no end. I can play games I missed the first time around, and I can see what so cool about new ideas like Rez. Total gaming freedom.

One thing I have found, is that I seem to be the exception. I love this place (DP Forum) to learn about all things console. I'm also a member of the forums of Ars technica for years with a postcount in the thousands. I find the twain rarely meet. Old console discussions at the computer forum don't go far, and only grow when discussing emu. Computer stuff here at DP doesn't go far, and it seems the computer skill level here is on "basic user" end primarily, with only a few who know how to use newsgroups, build machines, and troubleshoot complex computer issues. When I meet console gamers in person (thru business contacts and through this forum) I find the vast majority don't like their computers much, and prefer consoles. Almost no computer geeks among them. When I mention my console habit in the computer "community" I get those looks (that I'm guilty of having shot just a few years ago) that say 'oh yeah..that's nice' but you know they really believe comp games to be superior, and more "hardcore".

I realize many of you here may be exceptions to this generalization, and that's great. My experience so far, seems to indicate that there are 2 camps primarily, with very little cross migration.

What's "funny" about all his, and the path I've taken, is that my weakest area of knowledge in games, is the modern console era. Games wise, franchise wise, peripherals wise, from PS1 and on, I have a LOT to learn still. I stopped paying attention after the 3DO came out. I saw DOOM running on the 3DO, snorted derision at the control scheme and graphics, and stopped paying attention. Totally. I know far more about the 8/16 bit and pre crash eras than I know about what most people would say is common knowledge (in the DP community anyway). Thanks to this place, I'm learning about what's great about the 6 or 7 years I missed.

Whew! Got that off my chest. Don't blame ya if no one read all that! ;)
