View Full Version : Have you sold or traded a game you DON'T have a double of?

The only game I've sold in the past year that I didn't have a double of was Mario Sunshine. Other than that, I NEVER sell/trade in games. You?

I sell mine constantly because, firstly, I'm not a collector. Secondly, I think most games as a whole arent worth keeping: Some are just outright horrible, some are OK, and some i just dont have desires to play through again (usually story heavy adventure games). Out of the few I do have, i consider em the best of the best of their genres and are untouchable.

Hmm...I voted yes, but I'm not sure if that was what I meant. I don't trade every game after I'm done playing it, but since I decided I don't have the space, money, or desire to be a completist, I get choosy about what I hang on to. Actually, that's not entirely true either, because I only get rid of doubles of 2600 and 5200 games. Everything else is kind of based on if I'll ever play the game again or if there's some other reason I want to hang on to it.

I used to be the worst for doing that, until I whittled my collection down to my "keeper" games. I realized that I was really screwing myself over by impulse buying too much stuff, then trading it back in soon after.

I'm not too bothered by trading games in towards others since the money I've spent is staying within my hobby, and the loss I take on some games is offset by the great deals I have gotten.

Last game I traded in was DOA Volleyball, due to it's xtreme(pun intended) amounts of suckage.

It really depends on the system for me. I once sold Tunnel Runner because someone offered me $20 for it, but other than that I've never sold/traded an Atari 2600 double. NES games on the other hand, I will gladly trade away unles I really like it and can't get it for another system.

Still need to get another copy of Tunnel Runner...

Probably my biggest example of doing this was a copy of Fathom for the Intellivision. I got a fair price for it on Ebay, however at the time I didn't realize how rare it was. I don't regret it because I don't play my INTV and when I tested the game, I thought it was horrible. It would have been nice to hang onto it a while longer and use it as trade bait, but I was just getting started in collecting and the money allowed me to buy some other stuff I wanted.

I traded in Rat Attack (PSX) and Asteroids (PSX) for credit, as I didn't care for either. Sometimes I think I shouldn't have gotten rid of Asteroids, but I have no regrets about Rat Attack.

Shortly after that, I pretty much decided that I'm hanging on to everything, because some games can at least serve as bad examples (MST3K type fun to be had).

My collection of unlicensed NES carts has actually become my greatest source of trade bait. After collecting them for a couple of years, I realized just how much drawer space they took up. So, I cut 'em loose to expand collections that I care more for. There was only one time I almost regretted it, packing up my Tengen Tetris for mailing, but then I was better once I got my 2600 stuff in return : )

The only things that I will *not* trade away at all (unless I have multiples of course) are 2600, Intv, SMS, and Arcadia... as well as Sonic and Mega Man stuff. Everything else can be charmed off of me with the right trade.

I do that VERY often. For one of two reasons. 1) the game I'm getting is harder to find than the one I'm parting with or; 2) I'm helping someone - with a much better collection of that system - get closer to completing it.

You couldn't even pry a game cold dead hands!
I would have to be buried with it :D
Although Doubles are tradeable Singles are NOT!
I wouldn't even trade NHL 95 unless I had doubles ;)

I'll trade away any game in my collection thats not a prized possesion, or any game that I just never play. I'm a gamer first, collector second.

That's pretty much how I feel about it. I collect a tiny bit, but mostly I get games only to play or resell. I resell a lot of games that I don't have doubles of because they were bought for the sole purpose of reselling, but I also sell some from my own collection that just aren't that great.

I came across the Zellers Front Line (VCS) not too long ago. Since I need another Combat cart like I need another hole in my head, I swapped it for Aliens (since they're roughly the same rarity level).

I'd do something like that again in a heartbeat. But I'm not as hardcore as others.

Well, I can't vote, cause I traded a game that I didn't have a duplicate of that I wanted to keep this week. You don't have a category for that. I'll replace it later, but I traded it cause the ones I'm getting in return are MUCH harder to find. Makes it worthwhile. Normally, I don't trade games that I like that I don't have two of.

I've traded my single copies before but it's extremely rare and usually when I know what I'm getting is better than what I'm trading away for.

I figure maybe 5 or 6 such trades in my life, the last one being about 3 years ago.

If I'm collecting for a system, I never trade away games I don't have doubles of. The one exception is when I find a very rare game for cheap that just sucks to play and I've been willing to sell it for big bucks. I'm just not into rare games, I like having large game collections but if I'll never play it, I can be tempted to sell. My ratio is usually finding a rare game for 1 or 2 bucks, I can then be tempted to sell it if I'll get at least 30 bucks.

Unless I KNOW I'll never see it again I'll trade or sell just about anything.

Even stuff I might never see again I've done this with. It all depends on what you get in return.

The only exception to this are items which were given to me with the specific instructions not to sell (internal company items and modern prototypes etc)

Being an NES exclusive collector, i tend to trade away certain games/items for other items i want more. I will trade my games away for others that i want more, but i almost never sell them. The only exceptions have been with rare games that i didnt pay much for, and was able to make an insane profit off of.

this reminds me of the flea market hunter's motto " you only regret the things you DONT buy".

once upon a time i came across a nice little handheld burgertime game and traded it for a few colecovision titles i needed and the guy threw in a copy of astrocade biorhythm as a bonus. i then traded off the biorhythm as it sounded stupid and i didnt have an astrocade. so of course now i'm collecting handhelds and biorhythm is one of the few titles i need to complete my astrocade set. turns out i got the short end of the deal anyways since burgertime is a fairly rare handheld and i've had plenty of chances to aquire the colecovision titles since...

i also traded off a bit of aquarius stuff a few years back, i have yet to regret that but you never know down the road. for now whats in my collection will stay in my collection.

I traded or sold Cubicolor and Lochjaw for the 2600 pre ebay. I don't regret either really. I do wish I'd kept Rubik's Cube though since I'm going for a complete first party Atari 2600 collection..

I do wish I'd kept more of my Jaguar Games (Rayman, Ultra Vortek, AvP come to mind) since even some of the crummy ones cost more to get back. Heh...

I'm more likely to trade or sell off from current systems.

I would never think of selling any of my games anymore.
I only did it once, when I was like 7, and I am still kicking myself for doing it. Not that they were rare or anything, but just knowing that I could have a few more boxes checked off in my DP Collectors Lists is enough to drive me up a wall! :-D

No!

Though I have seriously started to re-think this policy. I just can't stand to trade/sell something that oneday I might have to get back. Plus, invariably when eventually I did reaquire the game it would be for more than I parted with it for in the first place... I guess I'm just pesimistic.

I keep all my DC games, but I'll trade or sell my Genesis or PSOne games. I bought some games at gamestop and sold the ones I didn't like to play. I collect Genesis games I like to play, since I never had one as a kid, there's a lot of games I want!

I traded Liberty or Death, Asterix Great Rescue, Mystic Defender, and a double of Gunstar Heroes to Collectors Cards and Games.

I'd never trade or sell stuff back to a store since the prices they offer are insulting. However, I'm perfectly happpy to part with non-Sega stuff I have no use or fondness for, since it lets me get more of the stuff I do want.

Since I started re-collecting in 2001, I've only sold two games that I didn't have duplicates of. I sold a copy of Suikoden 2 to help pay my rent. And I sold a boxed copy of Mega Man X3 because I wanted to fly to California to visit my gf. Ironically, I found another copy of Mega Man X3 at a thrift store in San Diego while I was visiting her. :D

Uh yeah...

Mint complete Q*Bert's Qubes for 2600
Starfox Competition cart
Minty Stadium Events and manual for NES
Sealed Zero for SNES
Boxed Flintstones Surprise at Dino's Peak for NES
Sealed NES games
Complete minty Dragon Warrior IV for NES
My ENTIRE NES collection

The fucking list goes on and on...

Happy about any of them. NO WAY.

However, I'm retarded, and sometimes spend more than I should. When that happens, I'll end up selling something that I wish I didn't have to.

Please shoot me, and put me out of my misery.

I've noticed that I have difficulties to part with games, even if I really don't like them at all and even if I know I wouldn't play them anymore anyway. The same goes with DVDs, I guess I'm way too much of a collecting person to give away stuff.

I've still managed to sell some games that annoyed me. The last one was Dino Crisis 3 for the X-Box. The intro and the graphics looked so great but then I saw how bad the controls and the camera angle was. Some other games I've sold are Master Blaster for the NES (this was a fault, I could have sold it over Ebay and make more money with it), Dracula for the S-Nes and Contra for the PS2. Oh and of course my N64 together with Zelda - Ocarina Of Time and Mario 64. I don't miss that sucker at all...

Occasionally...it depends what I'm getting for it.

If I'm getting something I REALLY WANT in a trade, yes, I might very well trade right from my collection (Like when I traded my Ody2 Demon attack for a Sega 32x I wanted More. and I do NOT Regret it.)

HOWEVER, thats the only time I'll trade non-doubles. Usually when I trade, I perfer to have more than one of the item off hand.

Unless indeed...the game is *bad* and I can get something BETTER for it.

Funny, I thought the same thing about that trade since the 32X I traded you was also not a duplicate. (However, I had already decided I was no longer interested in the 32X so I guess that's not quite the same.)

I've only gotten rid of some. Diddy Kong Racing because I just got tired of it and I didn't like it anymore. The second was Lego Racers for the Nintendo 64 because I had the 2nd for the computer and it was way better so I got rid of it. There were a few Game Boy games I got rid of because they came with the Game Boy and they weren't games I was interested in so they're gone.

Have I sold a game I only had one of?

I'll have to admit that I have done this numerous times in the past, mainly due to the productions of multi-carts, and not wanting to collect everything for all the systems I have. (Note: I don't really have anything of rarity anymore, besides the O2 stuff I will not part with, so no PMs please)

Here's some of the things I've had, but no longer....

Atari 2600:

Halloween - Wizard Video. This rarity 7 game I sold for a measly $20 back at the World of Atari show in Vegas (1999 if I remember correctly). I had bought the cart originally for $1 years ago, and was just looking to get rid of it, as I didn't like it (the only cool thing about it was that crazy intro music). I don't regret selling it, as it was to a guy that was supposedly collecting anything to do with horror games based on movies. (I sometimes wonder if the guy sold it on ebay). Years later, I found out how rare the game was, and regret that I didn't ask a bit more for it! (This was pre-DP Guide time, at least for me).
Miner 2049'er Vol. II - Tigervision. Now this I sold for a rather low price too, but I did it because I wanted to help a guy with his collection. I wasn't very good at the game, so I just sold it off. I can be a rather nice guy when it comes to practically giving away rare games. I know at the time, the guy was very suspicious of me selling it for a low price, but in the end, he was a happy camper (err... video collector).
There are other less rare one I've sold too, but the list would get a bit long. I don't regret getting rid of them (so-to-speak), as long as I helped someone out. If I ever knew they went on ebay, I think I'd go crazy - which is why I'll never look or ask.

Atari 5200:
Gosh, almost all the games for this system, with the exception of the ones I really like. I had almost all of them that I bought from a lady who had put an add in a local paper in the late 80's. I sold most of these through my website to whomever wanted them (I still have Soccer, which never sold). Only a few went on ebay, with Pitfall II going for the highest amount (which wasn't too high, but better than the other ones).

Vectrex:
Now here is the big one. I have sold more of this system and games than anything else I've had. I have traded and sold two consoles and the 3-d glasses to the big DP guy down in Chicago. I sold most of the cartridges off of my website (I had almost all of them at one time), and I gave the rest to Sean again, so he could use them for multi-carts (this was before he got someone to make the plastic cases). All I have kept is two working units, and the circuit board for my favorite game, Space Wars (the case went to Sean). And, of course, I have three multi-carts - an original, and two that Sean made - one with switches, and the new menu select one.

I voted yes, but only because I have traded games for systems that I do not collect. I collect primarily NES, and will pick up occasional games for systems that I still play once in a while, but whenever I buy a large lot that includes games from systems that I never play, those will go in the trading bin. Since most of these are not duplicates, I voted yes, even though I've never sold/traded any of my games/items from my NES collection - but I may sooner or later anyways. ;)

I collect, but if I don't have the system, or it's a game I don't particularly like, I'll just get rid of it. If it doesn't really get any play time and I don't really want it, it goes into the trade bin.

BetaWolf47
06-08-2009, 01:04 PM
Well, I try my best not to buy anything I don't want, so I don't really sell anything. The only problem with this is that I've got virtually no trade bait, and would probably have to part with something vital if someone wanted to trade for something I wanted more. Other times I'll pick up something impulsively, and then decide I don't want it.

I can't see myself parting with anything I own right now unless someone offers me something I really want, like a Sega Master System or a set of Mega Man games.

I've only sold four games in my entire life, Ms. Pac-Man for the Lynx, Maken X and Space Channel 5 for the Dreamcast, and Myriad 6-in-1 for the NES. I have since bought replacement copies of those games, other than the Myriad. I never liked the NES, I don't collect for it, so I didn't feel any need to keep it in my collection. I sold it on eBay (the only thing I've ever bought or sold on eBay) for a tidy sum to our own Jumpman Jr.

I tend to go through phases where I sell off large amounts of the games that have built up that I know I'll never get to or have no interest in (I tend to impulse buy alot of games if they're cheap enough). I also sometimes will sell off stuff if I'm looking at making a large purchase (like when I picked up my two arcade machines and a new bike recently).

I have sold at least 4,000 games online .... sometimes is pretty tough to keep up with the new releases and i have to sell rare or sought after games on my collection to keep up ...

I don't care if i don't have a spare, if i have not used that game in a year or more, there's no reason to be greedy :P

Usually I get rid of some games during my "new year's cleaning" of my collection. Every year in January, I go through my collection and get rid of the "dead weight" (Games I don't care to finish or have multiple versions of, systems I never play with, controllers I don't like or don't need, etc.) to shrink it down to just the stuff I like too much to get rid of. Usually, everything I sell off is something I can easily repurchase without any effort in finding it (Any of the Guitar Hero games, for example).

Sometimes, I simply get rid of a title because I need the money to make a big purchase (Like when I sold off Super Mario Galaxy to pay for Pokémon Platinum, or selling my entire Xbox collection to make enough money to buy a replacement PS2).
