I'd been looking forward to this for years but thought that they'd burnt out and quit a while back. It wasn't until someone from the team posted a thread on SA that I realized it was damn near done, so I ran out and bought a copy of Dungeon Siege that day.
Been playing it a bit here and there, and I gotta say...it's pretty fucking nice.
I strongly recommend everyone with a copy of Dungeon Siege to check it out. Even if you haven't played any previous Ultima games, it does a nice job of easing you into the game and even has a nice summary of the events from Ultima IV during the intro so you won't feel lost.
Just remember: talk to everyone!
Oh, and don't pick up random crap like you would in a jRPG. You don't want to get accused of shoplifting :(

Don't have Dungeon Siege, but i may actually get it if this mod is up to par.
I've been noticing a trend in recent years of player-made mods, being more innovative and just plain fun then the actual games themselves. Picked up Warcraft 3 just to play the DOTA mod, and it's been a blast.

I'm kind of pissing myself about this mod, although I don't know the gameplay. I'm going to be looking out for a copy of this game now. I assume all I need is Dungeon Siege, not Dungeon Siege 2.
When is there going to be a mod like this of Ultima I or II? I just can't wait to see those pirate ships replicating in 3D.
Anyone have a list of the most interesting and fun mods out there?
Wow, excellent, Ultima V was one of the best C-128 games.

Downloaded and started playing it - it's most excellent. I never played fully through any of the Ultimas prior to VII (VII was so cool that all the others really paled in comparison), but this one looks and plays really well.
There are a couple of minor bugs here and there, and you really need to play this in 1024x768 - but overall it's good. Almost like what Ultima IX was trying to be, in some sense.
It's too bad this is a remake, and not a new game. I wish they made new games like this nowadays. A game like this, with so much text and dialogue, would almost certainly get thumbs-down from any publisher, as they're all eager to pander to the thumb-twitch generation. The pace is a lot slower, the plot unfolds gradually in thousands of lines of dialogue, and the world is fleshed out much fuller than any JRPG could ever hope to be. Funny how the "Name / Job / Bye" paradigm is, IMO, far superior to anything in the past 10 years...with the possible exception of Planescape: Torment.
I like it - a lot.

It really does feel and look a lot like what Ultima IX (http://www.moongates.com/screens/ScreensU9.htm) looked like before the major overhaul and what X looked like at one point.
Oh, how I wanted to love Ultima VIII and Ultima IX ... :(
Edit
VVVV- No, it's a single player RPG and reason enough to rush out and buy the $10 jewel case version of Dungeon Siege! :)

What are you smoking? No, this isn't a MMOG. Just follow the link on the first post.

In fact, the more I play this, the stronger my reaction is.
At first, I was like: "This is pretty cool."
Then I said: "Wow, this is a lot of fun. Almost like the old days of PC gaming."
Now: "Why have I wasted so much time and money on those stupid console games? None of their so-called RPGs can top this."
I'm going to have a hard time playing any JRPGs after this remake. I'm just not going to settle for less any more. I'm not going to put up with the boring battles that any monkey could play, the paper-thin characters and the stupid one line that they'll continually spout at you all game, and all that nonsense. The detail of the characters in this game is great, and the world itself is a lot of fun to explore. No hook is put through your nose to lead you from place to place - you can walk here or there or wherever you can physically get to. There might be some giants in your way, but if you really want to you can try running past them (and sometimes succeed). There might be mountains, but there is also a path. It's just so refreshing to be able to explore a world rather than just walk along the narrow path the game makers set for you.
The only thing that begins to approach the genius of these Ultima games are the Elder Scrolls, and even those don't quite stack up. And Dungeon Siege itself...please. That hack-and-slash nonsense isn't even worthy of having this remake use its engine.
Ah...it's painful. PC gaming like this is dead and / or dying. And to think that we have EA to thank for this.

To be fair, Origin dug their own grave (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/issue/14/4) and EA just shoved the dirt on top of them.
I sure as shit do miss them, though :(

I just posted a comment over at Joystiq (http://www.joystiq.com/2005/12/27/ultima-v-reborn-via-dungeon-siege/) on this very subject...then noticed who commented directly above me. LOL
As I said there, I'm planning on picking up Dungeon Siege this week just so I can play this. These comments are only making the wait more and more unbearable.

I've decided to hit up local stores tommorow in order to purchase Dungeon Siege. Old School Ultima 5 is just too good to pass up.
I actually completed Ultima 4 on the C-64 way way back when. Played Ultima 5 only a little bit, so it should be all "new" to me as well. You can chalk me up as another person who grew up playing RPGs, but who has been less then impressed with the current Japanese take on the genre. While some are at least playable(Suikoden), the Final Fantasy series to me is just abysmal.

As an update: I picked up Dungeon Siege - Aranna something or other today from Gamestop for 19.99. But according to Ultima 5 Website, they are patching the game very shortly to fix some bugs. Which will then be immediately followed by a rather large and comprehensive patch that will fix everything. The 2nd patch will most likely(according to them) render all saved games unplayable if you install it.
So i decided i may just wait a lil bit before playing the mod, as i imagine such a thing would bother me. I am glad they gave advance notice though. Wish more actual companys that charged money for games were as forthcoming.....

Thanks for posting that, it makes it a little easier to wait a while before buying it. :)
BTW, if anyone's interested I heard that Target has a jewel case version of the original for $9.99. A cheaper alternative if you're buying Dungeon Siege just to play Ultima V like I will be. :)
