I've just joined this excellent website and I'm trying to track down the name of an arcade game from the late Eighties, possibly early Nineties.

It was a side scrolling, 2D, shoote em up. The main character was a flying robot and you added bits of artillery as you flew along.

I've racked my brains and I just cannot remember the name. I'm hoping once I've found the name out that it might be on a PS2 arcade classic disk by a Taito or Camcom.

Any help will be most helpful, and I promise my next post will have a bit more substance!

Cheers and a happy New Year to you all.

Hey CaryMG

Thanks for getting back to me, but your reply just takes me to another forum, how does that help?

Can you not just give me the name of the game?

Cheers my man.

Nath

The problem is, that describes probably a thousand or two games! In almost every 2D side scrolling game, you're a robot that can add bits of artillery as you flew along!

Is it possibly MagMax?

Can you think of anything else that might distinguish the game?

Your absolutely right, it does describe a million games.

It isn't Magmax, but thanks for guessing. Its something a bit older than that, around the turn of the decade (80s - 90s). I used to play two players in the arcade and the robots were chunky muthas... that doesn't help much either eh?

I'll keep searching on my quest for the holy grail, but thanks again for having a guess.

Cheers

Thats good advice. I've posted the same idiotic question on the webmagic website, lets see if there are any mystics on there!

The first game that poped into my mind was Armored Warriors, but I guess that is more of beat m' up.

Might be worth to check out the reviews section here. Maybe you can find it there.

Thanks dude, Armored Warriors is a kick ass game but a little too modern for what I was thinking. The vague game I'm trying to remember is basically R-Type with a robot, certainly from around the same sort of era.

Thanks for guessing though.

Just to say that I think your website is very cool.

Reading your reviews, you make a lot of sense. I just wanted to say though that Paul's Boutique by the Beastie Boys is one of the greatest albums of all time and that to the five boroughs wasn't quite up to it, but apart from that you are spot on (in my opinion).

Unlucky about the VW as well. I bought a supped up 1275 GT mini for £2k and then decided it would be a great idea to drive it on the motorway the day before my test! When a truck squashed the car like a tin can and I ended up in hospital for 3 months, losing the £2k because I wasn't technically insured, I learned a big expensive lesson. Thats what lifes all about!

Anyway, I'm still racking my brains about this game, but have a mooch at your website was very pleasent.

Take it easy.

Thanks man, its Side Arms!

Trouble is now, do they do a copy for PS2? Was it on Capcom classics?

Thanks for solving the riddle dude.

Unfortunately it wasn't on the recently released Capcom Classics disc for the PS2 or the PSP. If you're wanting to play the original, your best bet is to fire up MAME and Google for the Side Arms rom.

BTW, here's the KLOV entry for the game, if you wanted/needed more information: http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=9537

Thanks for letting me know.

Looks like a Rom is what it will have to be. Man I loved that game, probably could have paid the mortgage with what I slotted into it!

Cheers for help Flack, happy New Year.

Unfortunately I'm across the pond in the UK. I'm not allowed arcade machines in my games room, the wife does not approve! Only a big TV, and eazyboy and my beloved PS2.

Hey, but thanks for looking for me, I think if I was near Texas there could well be a divorce looming!

Cheers

Dangit!
I live in Fort Worth and I just spent money on Christmas gifts. Dadgummit!!!
Judging by the house in the background the seller might live in summerfields, about 10 minutes away from me!

What about Pc engine/TG16 HuCard. Side arms is a relatively cheap game for the that system. I can get one here sealed at a local swap meet. That guy probably wants 15 bucks for it. He has a ton of video games, but always over charges.

Thanks, I used to own one of the wonderful NEC PC Engines, what a machine! I'll try and download the Mame rom, but I'll keep my eyes open on Ebay for a PC Engine.

Thanks for your help.

Eh, just get the machine and if she notices it, just say you've had it for years and she just never noticed it among the rest of your collection. Say, "Oh, I thought you meant no MORE arcade machines." My bad.

Or, just act like it isn't there. "What arcade machine?! What on earth are you talking about?!!" Continue to play the arcade machine as this dialogue unfolds. She will give up, eventually.

That's what I'd do -- or pretend it's a fancy new planter. Just stick a flower on top of it and pretend it's for her!

Yeah, but that only works on four or five cabs until she starts thinking you're feeling guilty about something for buying her so many flowers. You could probably pull this off for a year or more with just one cab, though.

Shit, just buy her Nintendogs and she'll STFU forever even if you have a house of cabs. Hell, she won't even want to talk to you at all at that point. Bonus.

but I'll keep my eyes open on Ebay for a PC Engine.

Forget eBay - I've got a PC Engine setup that needs a new home right now. AND it's got Sidearms Special to go with it. PM me if you're seriously interested. (Don't mean to turn this specifically into a selling thread, but do want to ensure floating camel sees it upon his next visit. Carry on.)
