I have had the exact same question for a long time. Thank you for asking this. Now, for the answer to your question...

They are both completely different, based on different islands and with different races of people.
Ages is more about puzzles, Seasons feels more classic Zelda.
Its totally upto you, I prefer Seasons personally!

One problem I heard about the two, is one gives you the sword, while the other you have to fend for yourself via other methods. I don't know if that was true or not.

cool, thanks for all the info, and about that sword thing, I hope thats not true, although I guess it could make for some interesting fighting...lol, anyway, I might try seasons first, and then see where I go. I wanted to play majora's mask, but I never really liked the story line, to me fighting someone else at the end of a zelda game other than gannon, is a jip. Anywhoo, thanks for all the input.

Nope, sword in both.
Well, the bosses do feel a bit lack luster, these should be half-way through game bosses, but then you link up the completed games and save zelda from Ganon and... fab games!

Also make sure that when you beat one, transfer that data to the other. The other game will vary slightly if you were to play it with out completing the first one. Also after beating them both, you get to fight a final boss only reachable by beating both games. I think it's Twinrovia but I'm not sure, it's been a while.
It is definitely worth doing both games. You will have fun finding all the rings.

I actually just beat Oracle of Seasons, and I always thought that it was supposed to be the first one in the series.... After you beat it, it even says "Continued in Oracle of Ages"

I'm pretty sure Ages' ending says "Continued in Oracle of Seasons" as well since the "true" ending isn't available untill both games are completed. You have to transfer info from the completed game (Ages or Seasons) to the new cart (Seasons or Ages) to carry over weapons and pretty much "tell" the new game that you beat the other one.

I guess that makes sense. I just assumed that I picked the correct one to start with when I read that. ;)

well, I started Seasons last night, and it is good, thanks to all for contributing, and as soon as I beat that, I will be moving on to ages, and I will migrate my data over then. thanks again for all the feedback.

so I'm guessing you have to have a gbplayer or another gbc/gba/sp (and a link) to transfer the crap from seasons to ages?

No, its a password based system, you just write it down and key it back into the other game.

oh, so does anyone know for sure what game to play first?
Does it matter?
so let me get this straight
1. beat AGES for password to unlock some slight changes to SEASONS
2. beat SEASONS in the unlocked mode to get alternate ending
or vice versa.
so is the ending in both unlocked games the same then?

Yes the final ending should be the same. You can beat them in any order you want.

I'm playing through these games as well!!
:D
I just finished Seasons and have started Ages.
For what it's worth . . . the Nintendo Power Guide covers Seasons first . . . so that might be the prefered order.
A few notes on these games . . .
The linked side quests are a lot of fun and reward you with some awesome upgrades early in the second game . . . like a heart piece . . . a larger ring box early on in Ages . . . some useful rings . . . etc.
These games will allow you to use a link cable to transfer codes back and forth if you have two GBC units and the cable. Stupid me thought I could do this with a GBA cable linking my GBA:SP and GBPlayer . . . but it does not work. The linking will ONLY work with true GBCs and cable.

You play whatever one you want first, put in your ending password into the other game when you start it, and it'll continue the story. That's it.

Capcom designed them to be reversable -- ie. as it was pointed out above, that you can play either one first.
BTW, if you play it on a GBA instead of a GBC, you get some minor extras like an extra shop for more rings.
