Well, I've had this commodore monitor sitting on my bench being used for s video thru the luma/chroma for months, So I figured i'd give genesis RGB a try....
Not having much luck.
Here's what I did so far:
I happened to have some old mac cables of some sort with the right pinout for a genesis 2. So I plugged that into the genesis 1 to 32x cable adapter cord, and put it on my genesis 1.
On the commodore monitor, i plugged the cord i have into the 8 pin RGB. (I don't have a 6 pin end.)
I used the following pin connections :
Genesis end Commodore end
Red Red
Green Green
Blue Blue
Ground Ground
Sync(one line on gen) H sync
Sync(again) V Sync

I have to check my connections to make sure i hit the right pins, but as of now i get a white background with a blue bar rolling through it.

Any general ideas as to where i fucked it up? Do i need to connect +5v off the genesis to "intensity" on the 1084 end? Do I need to track down a 6 pin DIN end and use the analogue RGB?

The Genesis outputs analog RGB, so yes, you will have to do that. The digital RGB only allows 16 colors - 8 combinations of R/G/B on/off and an intensity pin to double that.
