Probably my favorite back in the day was Red Baron. I used to like to go balloon busting.

OK -- so it's 2 years past the Golden Age, but it's still beautifully flatshaded 3D polygon cool!

What years are you defining as the "Golden Age"?

Unless theres two A-10 Cuba's, that game came out in 1995.

Somehow I don't think you'd find anyone that agreed with you in saying the golden era of gaming ended in 1993. lol

The Golden Age is from 1984 to 1993.

1984 > The Introduction Of The Macintosh Computer
The Golden Age is remembered for classics like these:

"Alone in the Dark"
"The Bard’s Tale"
"Battle Chess"
"Captain Blood"
"Chessmaster"
"Chuck Yeager's Air Combat"
"Civilization"
"Damocles"
"DOOM"
"Dungeon Master"
"Earl Weaver Baseball"
"Falcon"
"Front Page Sports:Football"
"Incredible Machine"
"Indianapolis 500"
"Killing Cloud"
"King’s Quest"
"Leisure Suit Larry"
"Lemmings"
"LOOM"
"Magic Carpet"
"Maniac Mansion"
"Neuromancer"
"Pirates!"
"Populous"
"Prince Of Persia "
"Red Baron"
"Rise Of The Dragon"
"Rocket Ranger "
"Secret Weapons Of The Luftwaffe"
"Shadow of the Beast"
"SimCity"
"Starflight"
"Star Control"
"Star Trek: The 25th Anniversary"
"System Shock"
"Tetris"
"The Fool's Errand"
"The Secret of Monkey Island"
"TIE Fighter"
"Total Eclipse"
"TRINITY"
"Trust & Betrayal"
"Their Finest Hour"
"Ultima Underworld"
"Under A Killing Moon"
"Uninvited"
"Wings"
"Wing Commander"
"Wolfenstein 3D"
"Zack McKraken & The Alien MindBenders"
"ZORK"

These are all 16-bit games.
Creative, cool, different, engrossing making every byte of the 1,440,000 they had ta work with count.
The world's first 16-bit computer was the APPLE Macintosh.
The APPLE Macinosh went on sale on January 24th, 1984.
Hence, the Golden Age began in 1984.

1993 > "DOOM" Is Released.
So groundbreaking/cool/wonderous is it, developers proceed to make nothing but first person shooters from then on.
Pretty much every game made after that has some sort of harmful tool sticking out of the lower righthand corner of the screen.
The realization that that was going to be the case was in 1994 with "DOOM" engine clones being flung out.
"DOOM Clone" appears in the lexicon.
Hence, the Golden Age ended in 1994.

Chuck Yeager's Air Combat kicks ass.

There's nothing like shooting down an F-4 Phantom with a P-51 Mustang and being able to replay it over and over :D

When I was very young, I remember playing Chuck Yeager's Flight Simulator(this may have been before the Air Combat one) on our Tandy. The ground was always pink, and buildings were represented as gigantic red boxes. Good times.

To me, the golden age of the home computer was 83-92.

So my vote for best flight sim from back then, would have to be Sublogic's Flight Simulator 2 from 1983. My Apple ][ got quite a workout from this 'game'. My more recent faves would have to be the Falcon (3.0 = best combat flight sim ever.) series.

My all time favorite flight sim is Microprose's F-117A Stealth Fighter.

Say....
Would Pilotwings (SNES) count as a golden age flight sim?
It may not be first person, but you still fly around and it was released in 1990/1991.

I was asking for something more along the lines of Golden Age computer flight simulators such as "Secret Weapons Of The Luftwaffe".

I am going to have to say A10 - Tank Killer for the PC. It came out in 1989 with a 1.0-1.5 release in 1991. Spent many hours with this game. Not to mention it is one of my favorite aircraft. I also played F15 Strike Eagle a lot. I got this ol' DOS game to play on my now extremely old Radio Shack Tandy 1000TX. DOS is BOSS! :D

"A-10 Tank Killer" (http://www.migman.com/ref/1980_combat/A10TankKiller/A10TankKiller.htm)

And Yago, it was done by Damon Slye -- the same genius that gave us the computer flight simulator classic "Red Baron" !

One of my favs was F/A-18 Interceptor on the Amiga. It was one of the early sims on the Amiga, but those beautiful flat-shaded polys were a sight to behold, and the rush of cruising around with afterburners aglow was something to see.

And when I say cruising, I mean cruising. My friend and I tired quickly of the missions (I don't think we ever completed a single one) and moved on to just driving the F/A-18 into San Francisco and toodling around the downtown core at full afterburner.

Smashing into buildings at 600 MPH=bad.

Two things to note:

1) You couldn't drive over the Golden Gate Bridge, the plane would "fall through" the road when you first get on the bridge.

2) By pulling back on the joystick, while cruising under takeoff speed (you know, like 150 MPH), you create a remarkable facsimile of hydraulics in your pimped-out F/A-18. "Hey baybeee, joo wanna ride in my fiiiine automobile?!"
