Though I haven't eaten live goldfish, given the right circumstances, I would.

Aside from that, I generally refer to them as jewel cases, though occasionally as CD cases.

Family jewels cases for me too. I never understood why they were given this name. Clear plastic squares don't really look like jewels to me...

I call them jewel cases and CD cases.
So i voted i eat live goldfish.
It wouldn't surprise me if i did.
I had a tank full of fish that steadily dissapeared as a kid.
We blamed it on a cat we had though....

CD cases for sure. I've just always called them that for some reason. But I also eat goldfish. I don't know why you didn't make an option that would satisfy both of my needs.

I've gotten into the habit of calling the big ones like for Sega CD/Saturn/Early PSone jewel cases while calling the others cd cases.

I call 'em jewel cases, though I know one guy I used to work with in radio would consistently transform that simple name into "crystal packs." LOL

Origin of the name: the case does not derive in any way from containers for jewelry. Instead, the name apparently originates from the watchmaker's use of the term jewel to refer generally to a polished hemispherical bearing used in a mechanism (high-quality mechanical watches and clocks commonly use gemstones, typically rubies, for such bearings because of their low friction properties). A jewel case has two moulded hemispherical plastic bearings, in its hinges, hence the use of the term "jewel".

I used to work for a videogame shop back in Austin 8 years ago; we always referred to them as jewel cases.

I call them jewel cases, and I hate them with a passion.
There's absolutely no reason for the front cover not to extend all the way to the left side and reinforce the hinge bearings.
It's a no brainer, and yet somehow noone in the CD business noticed this obvious design flaw.

I voted goldfish for this reason:

I use "CD" cases for music cd cases

and jewel for games.

Always used CD cases, I just think that you never have to explain it. I am sure that there are people that do not know what a jewel case is, stupid should never be underestimated.

CD cases.

Jewel case seems to be a more American term for them as I rarely hear them referred to them as that over here.

I've gotten into the habit of calling the big ones like for Sega CD/Saturn/Early PSone jewel cases.I called those big crappy cases. Thank God that RE got scratched up or we would still be buying those worthless space hogging fragile piece of crap.

My theory is the Japanese thought Americans love big things. It would be like a vhs movie on disc and the large size would advertise by itself on the store shelves. A very lame marketing ploy by Japan.
