I like the look of the system but I don't think this thing will ever take off.

It looks pretty neato, but I doubt it'll get much market share. iRiver makes pretty good products -- for example, the original H10, which soundly whooped the iPod's ass in terms of quality -- but they aren't bought by the vast majority of consumers. They do pretty well for themselves, but they're not number one. I can see this thing turning a decent profit for them, but becoming a bonafide handheld contender will take a lot of clever marketing and some luck as well.

Will this actually use physical games? Or will it be more like a PMP?

No joystick? No thanks. If a system is based on 3D games it needs to have analog control, no exceptions (that is unless it has a touch screen ;)).

I don't really think they're trying to fool anyone. I doubt they even have a working model yet. The image is just to give you an idea of what it might be like.

Ok time for my handheld talk:
GP32 was made by a company called Gamepark, the company for some reason made a sub-division called Gamepark Holdings. Well the two companies split up and GPH released the GP2X which is aimed at being the ultimate free source machine, although it was released with a shitload of bugs. Gamepark took a different route by offering PSP-like qualities in their XGP, which has yet to be released.
About the Gizmondo Widescreen, that thing might have caused the death of the original Gizmondo. It was announced before the original even hit the US! Comeon if that's not poor managemen then I don't know what is. Anyways it's supposed to be released sometime late this year. It's going to be at CES but I doubt it will ever be released.

Ok time for my handheld talk:
so right now in the US we have 5 handheld formats with the GBA, DS, PSP, Gizmondo and N-Gage. Now 3 (iRiver, GP2X, XGP) more want to enter the market and the Gizmondo is already looking for a redesign. Now is there anything else in the handheld market that's coming out?
Also what are the odds that we see the GP2X and XGP in the US?
Slipdeath
01-03-2006, 09:04 PM
Well actually Phil the Gizmondo Widescreen is a new platform all together and not a redesign and that is why so many Gizmondo fans feel ripped off now. The GP2X I guess will never really see a US launch similiar to the GP32. But it was made with an international thought of mine. Some retailers in the US like Gp32z.com carry them. There hasn't been much detail about the XGP besides those pictures and some specs, I doubt if it will even have a Korean launch. Oh and that digiblast that it is popping up in random parts of Europe is kind of an oddball.
and then there's all those edutainment handhelds, leapster, vsmile pocket, leapster xtreme (?)

Sure.
I believe I read somewhere that this thing was planned for an August 2006 launch. I'll try and find that link again.
Either way, it will be really interesting to see what happens. It is always great to see a new competitor coming into an already heavily dominated handheld gaming arena.

You know outside of the big names DS, PSP, and GBA. I think the iRiver actually sounds pretty good with that built in hardrive. If all those system were out right now I think I'd get the iRiver.

I'm enjoying these pictures you guys are supplying. A lot of these hand-helds are looking really nice, the only question is where is the marketplace for the less known systems? I don't look too far into the handheld market because 99% of the time I'm playing a game at home in my room. Now, if I get something like this and dump good money, I would spend some time chilling at a bar or in a lab playing this.

By the way, this thread (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=78193) mentions another portable from Polaroid (well, it's branded as Polaroid, but made by someone else, apparently). I posted a link to this thread there too.

My question is will any of the newcomers put their marketing muscle behind their systems? They've got quite the uphill battle ahead of them all.
As a consumer I love the idea of more handhelds. More competition means better selection and prices for me :)

wow i hope that comodore thing takes off - i hope they offer individuals the ability to make games for it - or atleast a place to submit games for it - to be sold via those kiosks they mentioned in that article
although i doubt it would fly in the US

Haha, the Cenix GIMP LOL Eveb so, that game looks nice, and so does the handheld.
The commodore device...I'll wait to see on that one; that picture makes the screen look iffy (but that could easily be a problem with the photo not apparent when actually using it).
Quick question: on Slip's collage, what's the wide one in the bottom middle?

I did some reading...they announced the Gizmondo Widescreen before they released the regular widescreen, and then (in the press release) blamed it on the leaking of screens, or something. x_x
