View Full Version : Why a DP'er should NEVER go to the Nintendo World Store

Hey everyone!

I went to New York for New Years this year and had a hell of a good time too. I wanted to check out a few used game stores or thrift shops but I really didn't have the time. We did however get to check out the new Nintendo store. As soon as I walked in all my thoughts were about the community and how much information has been shared with me over the time I have been a member so my goal was to share this with everybody. (I will be putting up my short little video soon where I even shout out DP!)

http://www.wellingtonplacecondos.com/images/dp9.jpg
I have been wanting to buy a DS for quite some time and I figured what a good place to buy one if they had any Mario Kart Bundles left.

First thing I notice is a case with really cool Nintendo DS's that are decorated in Crystals. They are constantly attracting ooohhh and aaahhhhs and so I took a picture of them.

http://www.wellingtonplacecondos.com/images/dp8.jpg

The store is two stories, has a cool layout with gaming machines all over the place. There is probably 25-30 DS's you can play, 10 Advances and 10-15 GC's at any given time. There is a decent game selection which usually has the more popular titles. Everybody is friendly and reasonably informative on the items there. You can also play either DS or some advance games on television screens which I thought was cool.

So after checking out all of the newer stuff I proceed upstairs to where they have the classic items I have been hearing about, now we're talking!

Game and watch stuff

http://www.wellingtonplacecondos.com/images/dp3.jpg
Gotta love good old rob!!!

http://www.wellingtonplacecondos.com/images/dp4.jpg
This is the famous GB that was damaged in desert storm, they actually keep it running 24/7 in the store!

http://www.wellingtonplacecondos.com/images/dp5.jpg
Damn I wish my GF took a better picture of this one, its called the Nintendo AVS I believe. I was like Holy $@%! I have never seen one of these things before! The card said it was shown maybe once at an electronics show in 1984 or something like that. Yes, that IS a Nintendo TAPE DRIVE, I couldn't believe this thing even existed. Couldn't remember seeing it over at Assembler or anything like that.

http://www.wellingtonplacecondos.com/images/dp6.jpg

They even show some japanese products in the store, a famicom! I wish they showed some of the accessorys/addons like the FDS, that would of been cool

So after checking out the museum section we go and check out the apparel which consists of cool tee-shirts and stuff like that, Then I get this very bad ass picture in front of one of the TV screens. This was some commercial and I don't think the timing could of been any better!

http://www.wellingtonplacecondos.com/images/dp1.jpg

Unfortunatly they had no more DS systems with Mario Kart so I continued on to one or two stores the next day to try and find one (It would of saved $10)

After forgetting about it for a while and enjoying the city, my girlfriend says "lets go back to the Nintendo store and I'll buy one for you as an early christmas gift"

I reluctantly accept after she asks for the tenth time and we go into the store, so we're back.

http://www.wellingtonplacecondos.com/images/dp8.jpg

These things are looking pretty good, so I playfully inqure a little more information. Come to find out they are custom made by a company called NYC Peach. This company at Nintendo's request made 24 of these for the store.

Hmmmm.

......

........

..........

............

So I go and make the craziest decision of my gaming life, I BUY SIX OF THEM.

http://www.wellingtonplacecondos.com/images/dp10.jpg

The four silvers and one blue are $499 apiece, the Pink one is $599.

They tell me this is the most expensive purchase ever made in the store (Hey and it's by a DPer!!!)

My reasoning is, these 24 were made FOR Nintendo and sold in the store. I see them as an investment and I figure they have to go up in value.

There was also 6 advances made for this special promotion they said.

My personal fav is the one that looks like a checkered flag you have to see it in real life to really be able to appreciate it although for some reason I can't keep my eyes off this pink Nintendogs DS. It's so cool, if I was a chick I would HAVE to own this one. My favorite part is that white is used for all of the buttons, the stylus and the bottom, it is REALLY badass.

So that my story, it's all true too.

By the way, I never got that DS for my gift, guess I'll have to play with one of these instead......but which one?

(I'll try to have a video up by the end of the week)

I'm back

Happy New Year

Great pics! I was there for the opening and *tried* when Miyamoto was there. Anyone know when they added those crystal DS' and how long they might be there? Were the variations of the GBAs still upstairs?

$2000 worth of DSes?

wow.

Anyway, I'm always down with more pics of the place (another DPer visited and took pics a while ago, but didn't get the shot of the side of the building...nice!) Did you notice metal buttons on the AVS controller? :D

Cool pics! I was at Nintendo World on its opening weekend, and I took plenty of pics. If anyone would like, I could post them and my own story, to compare how NW has changed since it opened. I got me some pretty sweet grand opening goodies, but nothing remotely like those DSes :-P

Crazy! I was wondering when you were going to get to the point of why we shouldn't go in there. Who buys 6 DS's LOL.
Good stuff. I've been to the store, but it was a while back, still a cool place.

<-- was simply nodding along... then... "six of them" ...holy #$@#! LOL

Wow... I've made a few gaming/resell investments, but $2k was my limit - and those were broken up into vast amounts of quickly resellable items. I couldn't imagine dropping $3.1k.

Did you get some sort of proof/authenticy to go with them - it'd be awfully nice to be able to back up your story when you do go to sell. Did they mention why the pink was $100 more?

Better hope that they don't decide your purchase is indicative of a high demand for this product and they start cranking them out heheh

THat's a great story! I hope they do rise in value. I've seen a few of the crystal encrusted systems and no offense to anyone, they're ugly. Perhaps playing is the only way to ultimately appreciate em?

01-04-2006, 10:59 AM
That's some hot shit right there. The blue one is gorgeous.

I don't know if I'd say they're investments, as I just can't see an aftermarket-modified system going for that much(at least not much more than you paid for them IMO). If these things have special Nintendo paperwork/packaging, the sky's the limit, though.

But you do certainly have some special items, and if they bring you joy, then that kicks ass.

Oh yeah, and that pink DS is Japanese, so that's probably why it costs more. Someone else on the forum here posted about the same system that was won via a Nintendogs contest. (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=75308)

Holy Crap, CGT, you crazy bastard! LOL That's awesome! I seriously hope you get them insured, put in a locked display with bullet-proof glass and keep it airtight. Wow....cool finds, but man, that is hardcore.

Or, are you going to sell any of them? They are, after all, one of a kinds. You may be able to get more than the original price, if you find the right collector.

I was thinking about it, I mean I want to keep at least 2 but I may offer a few for sale at some point. My thoughts were to offer them to DP for maybe just a day or 2. If that is the case I might make a seperate sale thread.

Whoa, $3100? @_@

What a coincidence, i'm listening to ACDC on my PSP and the song playing is "Moneytalks". I didn't select it.

Anyway, Great purchase! I'll have to go to that store sometime.

Wierd, the music stopped as i was about to hit "Submit". LOL

That's not a sure thing, but for his sake, I hope so.

Personally, I wouldn't value them at much more than half what he paid, even given the brand name...

My advice would be to sell a couple if you can. $3100 is way too much to have tied up in sparkly ds's. I mean, I wish you the best of luck, but it doesn't seem to me that many systems (hardware) go up much beyond what you paid, and rhinestones just don't seem that compelling a reason for someone to overpay. I think you could do way better taking that $3100 and buying some rare software like an NWC or mint complete 2600 rarity or a few stadium events or something. My two cents. :)

Just wondering, what exactly was that Nintendo AVS? Was it a Nintendo 8-bit computer? An add-on to the NES?

Hey Ill glue some beads on a Genesis for 500 bux if you want it....

I knew that "Bedazzler" that I bought on QVC 8 years ago would come into use some day. Time to encrust my 360 with Cubic Zirconias and sell it on eBay!

No offense, but IMHO those are ugly. I know you are all excited and I am happy for you, but I wouldn't get caught holding one of those, let alone buy 6 of them.

It was shown at 1 CES, kind of an early version of the NES with more computer features, search google for some real interesting facts about it.

very cool... i knew they sold the nintendogs one there, but i had no idea about the others.

that pink nintendogs one is certainly not as limited as the others though. as people have been saying, it was given away to a bunch of people (including one DP member!) as the grand prize in the nintendogs tour... plus, it's been sold at the nintendo store for a few months now. it's shown up on ebay once, but only sold for about $300. i was outbid by like $10 in the last seconds.

i'm one of the (if not the) biggest DS collectors on here, and i'd love to grab one from you in your other thread, but there's no way i can justify spending that much cash on another DS, even if it is splashed with crystals.

still... color me impressed... and jealous!
