Am I right in thinking that F-Zero GX has the most racers on a track with 30 at a time? This is mind-blowing to me, there is always someone with you if you're doing ok, and their tail burners light up the dark tracks, they really add to this game's insane visuals.

What about Pole Position-type games where there are ALWAYS more cars in front of you, no matter how fast or slow you go?
As far as counted racers, though, I can't come up with one that has more than 30 off the top of my head. Doesn't one of the new NASCAR games have a full field?

Daytona with 40.
That's Daytona USA, Sega, 1994. AFAIK, you can actually have 40 players at once if you chain 40 cabs together.

The newer Nascar games have 43 drivers on the track.

The most i have seen of those was 12-16.
Waste of space IMO.
The most i ever saw use it at once was 4 people and that was me my cuz, my uncle and my bro.

That was my first thought too. Going back a bit, there was a Spectrum game called Road Race (http://www.webmad.co.uk/roadrace.jpg) which had you starting 680th in a race. ;)

GTR for the PC with 52 cars. On consoles, modern NASCAR titles have 42 cars (Not including yourself).

Model 2 hardware (or at least Daytona) can only link up to 8 machines at once. But yes, on the Beginner track, there are 40 distinct cars total, counting the drones.
Shutokou Battle Online (the series known as Tokyo Xtreme Racer in the US) is probably worth a mention here, as it was basically an MMORPG version of the game. The web site seems to indicate it was closed down back in September, though.

I'd imagine it was still one-on-one battle races like the console games, but with any number of players roaming the highways of Tokyo or wherever.
Now I'm curious to find out the greatest number of human players in a racing game. Heh. I seem to recall Toca 2 for PS2 being at least 10, but I doubt that's the record.

That's easy, 43 can race NASCAR Racing 4/NASCAR Racing 2002 Season/NASCAR Racing 2003 Season online assuming one of the drivers is also the host (Though the best situation would be 42 drivers with 1 slot reserved for a dedicated server hosting). That's assuming the track has 43 pitstalls though. Even in real NASCAR, some tracks only have like 40 stalls requiring a few teams in the back to share a stall until a few cars retire.

Just a SLIGHT breakaway... Micro Machines 64 can have up to 8 (yeah, EIGHT) players (that's us) playing at the same time!!!
.... Though I've yet to try it.

Hmm, 8 is probably the record for most players on a single console. Street Racer for PS1 is another one I know of that can do it (with a pair of multi-taps, obviously).
Leo: those Nascar games are for PC, right?

There's also the J-Cart version of Micro Machines 2 for the Mega Drive - 8 players on one console with no multi-tap required.

The most players on one console is 12 and was done by a saturn with two multitaps with I think something like death tank zwei. Someone be not lazy like me and search for saturn multitap games and it'll come up.

I think you can get up to 10 with a pair of 5-port multi-taps. But as cool as Deathtank is, it's not a racer, so we don't need to count it. ;-)

Yes, those three games were PC titles developed by Papyrus Racing Games and published by Sierra.

Yeah, Micro Machines 2 and Micro Machines 96 for the Mega Drive could do 8 players simultaneously, without a multitap - and with only 4 controllers neccessary! Great fun squishing up and sharing half a controller with someone.

Aww...there go my plans for a fun summer project. :D
BTW, I think you're right about TOCA2 being 10 player. I kinda wish I still had that game. Even though it looked like a pile of ass, it still had the best driver AI I've seen in a racer.
