View Full Version : Services Needed: Someone to compile and create a PS1 game

I need the services of an experienced ps1 programmer. The user must currently have a psx development setup and is able to compile a game if given proper source code and libraries. The user must sign an Non Disclosure Agreement. I am willing to pay for these services if success is met. I have limited contact with the original owner of the work, who must remain anonymous, but can offer help if the user has questions.

If interested, please PM me. Tell me what compiler(s) you own. I have an email out to the programmer to find out what compiler needs to be used (Psy-q, Metroworks, PROdg, other).

I'm assuming if anyone is interested that they will PM me and not respond in the thread. I was hoping if I find someone to keep him/her identity confidential so that people don't bug to know what game it is and if they can get a copy.

You're probably better off asking over at Assembler (www.assemblergames.com) - lots of techy types over there ;)

Yeah, Anagrama's right, go ask over at ASSEMbler.

Now, I'm sure there isn't much you can tell us about this game, what with a NDA and all, but surely before excitement levels rise you can confirm if the game is either:

1. An unreleased proto that is never gonna see a release

2. An unrelesed proto that the owner may release once compiled and running

or

3. A homebrew game that, I assume, the creator will want to release once it's all compiled.

However, I'd assume that any brewer would beable to compile themselves. So surely this is an unreleased game?

So, a fully complete ready to compile unreleased PSX game, eh? Now that is interesting......

1. Yes
2. No
3. No

And yes, this is interesting.

If the person is successful, I have source code to another complete one. Then I will go ahead and get source code to a third one which wasn't totally complete (I know the reasons but can't specify why). IMHO this third game is a high profile game which never made it out (died quietly). Dating between 1997-1999 (I put a date range because I'm too lazy to find out when).

Are you still a Quake III player? I'm on all the time. (different name of course)

Anyhow, this is the latest game I got for ps1:

(Multi-cd game. No one should recognize the inside cover because it's so small thanks to Kodak.)

if noone is going to recognise the cover, why the hell did you bother posting a pic of it?

So you have 3 unreleased PSone proto games, all ready to compile, but you're not gonna tell us what they are? Even though these games are never gonna see a scene release?

Hmmm.

Depending on what the games are, I'm sure people would be willing to pay for a release.

Guys, don't be stupid. Here's the d/l: many people get protos directly from programmers/industry contacts. Releasing the compiled code (or even mentioning where it came from, which is pretty easy to figure out for some games) ruins any relationship you have with the programmer/designer who sold you the code, and makes it much harder to get code in the future. When the people complaining in this thread start throwing down big money for unreleased code and actually know something about how the unreleased game scene operates, then their comments will have some value. Until then, quit with the uninformed jaw-jaw.

My favorite part is watching them start to drool and beg. It's so predictable, you could set your watch by it. Everyone takes a shot the first time someone uses the "h" word!

I never said I have 3 unreleased. I have 2 source codes, one unreleased and one is an early version of a game already released. If someone could compile the 2 games, then I will go ahead and get the third source code (which will cost a lot of money). The third one, in my opinion, is a high profile game but wasn't finished (not even sure it is playable). The companies who made the games have long been dead.

Kevincure couldn't have said it better.

If you all must know it is David Jaffe and his unreleased games. (j/k in case Jaffe actually visits here...for those who don't know him, look him up)

Ohhhhhhhhh! So you have a source code for Dark Guns then....

Interesting... It all makes sense now...

EDIT: Straight from Mr. Jaffe's Blog

Man, this was a depressing time in my life. I had finished TM2, left Los Angeles and moved to FOSTER CITY,CA and started building a team to make my next game. This was the first time I tried to design AND produce. So now, besides worrying about fun factor, commercial ideas, and tuning, I was also stressing about people coming in late for work, our computers having the latest versions of Alias (3d model program), ttrying to fill out the rest of the team by sitting in interview after interview. Producing a title- when you are good at it- is a full time job. Doing it when you suck at it (like I do) WHILE ALSO trying to design a game, is asking for death. I was miserable and it ranks as one of the most unhappy times of my life! I was like 215 pounds, I hated where I lived, hated the game. Man, I'm glad that's over.

GAMEWISE, DARK GUNS was my attempt to capitilize on the growing mainstream market the PLAYSTATION ONE had created. Games like FROGGER were hopping off the shelf and I wanted in on the action. So Dark Guns was a modern update to the classic overhead shooters that used to rule the arcades and 16bit consoles. In DARK GUNS you played a UFO attacking Earth. It had lots of Twisted Metal 2 style mayhem, with your UFO being able to blow up Dodger Stadium; Hollywood; Skyscrapers in New Your (pre 9/11 of course); and do all kinds of other anti social acts (like abducting hot cheerleaders, taking them on your ship, and then POUNDING THE BUTTON- track and field style- to...to uhm...well, let's just say I did it BEFORE GTA 3 did...dammit!)...The matically I was really inspired by R CRUMB's overtly sexual cartoons and wanted the game to feel the same way....many on the team didn't get it and tried to fight against this vibe....end of the day, none of us won. It ended up feeling more WARNER BROS. cartoons than Crumb, but it's cool.

Also of note:

*Mark Anderson- who is on GOD OF WAR- desiged a kick ass opening shell that we ripped off for TM BLACK.

*Shannon Studstill was a lead artist I hired for DARK GUNS who ended up producing GOD OF WAR and is now head of production for Sony Santa Monica.

*Marketing at the time were pretty dense and if it didn't say GAMEDAY on it, they didn't know how to sell it. My understanding is that they pushed to get it canned and never even gave me a focus group to see if my ideas were valid. So while it was canned, I dodged the bullit from a standpoint of calling it a failure. For all I know, it could have been a huge mainstream, pick up and play success. But we didn't even get to test it!

*I learned a shit load (most important lesson is I AM NOT A PRODUCER)...

*I was always annoyed that people thought I had lost my mind for making an overhead shooter. I wamted to yell at them: I KNOW IT'S AN OVERHEAD SHOOTER, YOU HARDCORE GAMER FUCK!!! I AM TRYING TO HIT A DIFFERENT AUDIENCE THAN YOU!!!
Again, it may not have been the best idea and it may not have worked, but I was thinking of the MAINSTREAM gaming audience that was emerging and I took it personally that people just thought I was a dummy who thought the same hardcore folks who played FF7 would care about an overhead shooter...I KNEW they would not....but not all games had to be made for that crowd!!! Hmmm...guess that still bugs me...ah well....

Anyway,....

I still have the alpha of the game. Will try to put some screen shots up soon if people care to see it. Would love to get the alpha version to people one day...pushed to get it on the PSP but the code is all over the place and many of the key team members have noved on....end of the day,it's a fun little shareware style game (that cost way more than a share ware game should)....certainly not worth buying these days (and maybe not even back in the PS ONE days) but there's still lots of neat stuff to see in it....

I've been monitoring these forums off and on as a guest. I always find them entertaining and informing. I finally decided to register and make my first post.

Why has there been so much negativity lately??? I hope these forums don't turn into flaming sessions like other putrid sights have turned into. Anyhow I digress. I think this post is very interesting. I'll talk to a few friends to see if they can help.

You might not be able to tell us the games in question, but as one dedicated gamer to another, I wish you luck!

Dunno. Maybe the post-holiday bills are coming in? I'm feeling bitchy lately. That picture of the CD was lame. This tends to be a pretty cool board most of the time (my comments notwithstanding.)

Thanks for the bit about Dark Guns, Grand Am. Stuff that that is facinating.

Welcome to the forums! And yes, there does seem to be some angry people out there recently. I try to ignore them. However, to please some ppl I made the picture referenced above bigger.

I just donated meseta to vgextreme for being new and posting his first message to show his support for me. I also donated some to kevincure for his work on the PSX book and supporting me. Thanx guys!

hmm...Crumb's stuff was supposed to be a joke (so he said, hehe, he is a decent family guy now though), but you can't blame anybody for not taking to it (look up his site to see what I mean).

Hey PS1Expert... do you know why the European market got about 200 more games than the US market? Was the PS1 even bigger over there compared to the N64? Are the extra games mostly soccer(football) games and soccer simulations? I have 3 shooters and 1 platformer in PAL form that I can't play but they look pretty cool. I'm wondering how were the games that got a release in Europe but not in the States. Any idea?

The PS1 sold about the same number of systems in Europe and the US (actually, both the US and EU had more systems sold that JP, but JP had 4000+ games released!). I think you saw more Euro releases because 1) "regional" games, such as country specific soccer titles, and 2) the PS2 came out later in EU than in the US.

KJN

Another reason, and it's probably even more apparent on the PS2, is that Europe has a much larger budget scene.

I never considered regional titles.

How do those work? What languages are included on any major PAL release? Are there games that are translated into Finnish or Dutch or Swedish or Hungarian or whathaveyou and then released in that specific region?

Just an update if anyone cares. I was able to find someone who is currently looking at the code. I sent it to him last night. According to him it looks already compiled. He sent it to his debugging station but nothing prety happened so he's going to do some code debugging this week on it. He said the code looks very simple so it shouldn't be too difficult (crossing my fingers). If it works I'll give DP a preview.
