I'm looking to pick one up but need to know which one is the best. Also this is with a Phantom 1 so no SNK-Playmore.

As far as charachter selection I see 98 has 50 but want to know for sure before I buy one.

its most common to see KOF 98 voted as best.
also.. any reason you left off KOF 2003?

KOF 2003 is a SNK-Playmore Release and doesnt work well with a Phantom 1 because of the new encryption.

You can't really go wrong with any of them. I think '98 has the best selection but 97 was probably the one that felt the most 'right', especially if you're going against other players, and not the MVS AI.

I'll always hold 95 dearest to my heart though :)

what about the 4 on 4 matches and what is this about strikers and stuff? What games are the strikers in and is it good?

2001 is the best KOF with strikers, and it's the one I voted for.
You pick four characters, and you can make 0-3 of them strikers, and you can re-assign your team before each match.
It also has some of the series best art and animation.

I like 98 as well, but I'm getting tired of it now.
2002 is just redundant.

2002 was the best one gameplaywise-no gamebreaking glitches, no uber-characters, plus a great lineup.

Yeah, but it had bad music, and the roster was basically 98 with a handful of eolith characters.

Except that the game played better than 98. Is it really a bad thing to be based on 98's legacy? :P

And woh's Eolith in there? K9999, Angel, and May Lee? They're all pretty fucking sweet.

I just didn't care for the reduced movesets or the power gauge system in 2002.

I'm also not a fan of the horribly inconsistent animation and art style for the sprites.

I'll admit that it's better than 98 in terms of gameplay, but not by much.

2002.

Got rid of the dumbass strikers system in 2000/2001 and it has probably the most complete character roster.

Favourite King of Fighters to date, and as a Street Fighter fan, I believe it's the only one in the series that comes close being as good a fighter as SF is (and always has been).

98, it was balanced well imho

97' is another vote I'd cast for 2nd place

But it still plays fine on MVS boards.

Anywho my vote is for kof 2k3. Love the tag team system.

Ya I know but I made this poll to help me decide which one to buy first for use on my AES.

Also I hear KOF XI kicks major ass. But my local arcade doesnt have it which I thought was weird since they host tournaments all the time.
