A slightly egotistical quote from Kaz Hirai:
----------------------------------------------------------

when it came to the fourth part of Sony's digital future vision, PlayStation, the Sony keynote address disappointed. Stringer, a masterful presenter, ceded the floor to Kaz Hirai, the similarly smooth president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America, who talked about...the PlayStation 2. Hirai said the console actually saw a 10 percent year-on-year increase in holiday sales, contradicting many analysts' predictions. He also elicited chuckles by pointing out that both the PS2 and the PSP outsold the hard-to-find Xbox 360 over the holidays. He also took a verbal swipe at Sony's next-gen rival, saying, "The next generation doesn't start until we say it does."

When the subject did turn to the PlayStation 3, Hirai offered no major new information. He did say that the console is a "key pillar of Sony growth in 2006"--reconfirming its release this year--and said Sony has shipped out 4,000 software development kits for the console worldwide. Otherwise, though, Hirai merely restated previously known information about the PS3. He said its CPU, the vaunted Cell processor, would use only seven of its eight cores, and, yes, the console would be backward-compatible with both PS2 and original PlayStation games.
----------------------------------------------------------

heh well at least we know that the PS3 will be backwards compatible with both the PS2 and drumroll.....PSone lol

Backwards compatible with itself? That's impressive ;)

I think the backwards compat issue is way overblown. I could really care less if my xbox games work on a 360 or if my ps1 games work on a ps2. Remember the days where that wasn't an issue or point on which system you bought?

I think, for me, the only time it'll become an issue is if I get a 360.

There's no way I've got room for an Xbox AND a 360 in that set-up!

I personally, DO care about backwards compatibility. Especially if it does some nice load time decreases. I don't want to bring my ps1 upstairs to play castlevania SOTN again. and if they completely eradicate loadtimes from ps1 games, I have FF4,5,6 and chrono trigger just sitting there BEGGING to be played.

Plus, I'm sure I'll still have 10-20 ps2 games backlogged when I get a ps3, and it will be nice to not have both systems up there while I work through the rest of my ps2 games :)

Same here I luv backwards compatibility and think its a great PLUS for avid gamers when one can play all their "old" games on their new system.

"The next generation doesn't start until we say it does."

Well, it's been that way for the last two generations of hardware, so I kinda agree with him.

Ummm, since a next generation machine is actually out, that's just a really dumb thing to say.

Devilman, what is that thing on top of the two stacked PS2s?

LMAO! Kaz Hirai can kiss my ass.... (actually I'd prefer if he didn't). LOL

The new gen started on November 22nd if I'm not mistaken, just like the 128 bit gen started on 9/9/99! (in the US atleast)

Sorry but the man is right. Who cared about Nintendo and Xbox when PS2 launched? Just like now, I bet there will be a few deaths involved of the PS3 launch, and if I don't get mine at launch I'll be inflicting one...

Unfortunately, as we discovered with the PS2 "fast load" option, PS1 games often have their programming reliant on the load times when the disc is spinning at 2x speed. Attempting to run the games with shorter load times can actually cause lock-ups and other problems. The PS3 will undoubtedly default to spinning PS1 discs at 2x and possibly even keep the 32x max speed for PS2 CD games, although I can't imagine that any PS2 games rely on long load times.

The thing I don't really get is how people are still so adamant about how great the PS3 is when they keep stripping features from it. This is the first I have heard about them only using 7 of the 8 cores. So now the consumer will now probably foot the bill for this ultra complex chip that will not even be running at full throttle. Seems that Sony has hit their arrogance peak on the third run. Same as Nintendo did on their third home console.

HEH Nintendo hit their "arrogance peak" back in the NES days my friend it just took a couple of generations for Nintendos self indulgence to catch up with them.

Although Sony has shown similiar signs of over inflated egos they would have to really fuck up and I mean MAJOR FUCK UPS one after the other to lose their lead going into the next gen console war , although I dont give a shit who wins as long as I get to play some great games in the process.

Thats why I finally chose the PS2 as my main gaming machine in this generation and for the foreseeable future FOR THE GAMES the Metal Gears, Silent Hills, the RPGs, the Devil May Cry games, the Onimusha games , the Ratchet and Clank games and the many great 2-D fighters and shooters ALL ON ONE SYSTEM I dont care if its called Playstation , Xbox or Revolution ITS ALL ABOUT THE GAMES MAN NOT THE CONSOLE.

Also whats with the "stripping of features" thing?

Im not a fanboy but the PS3 will play cd,dvd, BLUE-RAY,PSone and PS2 games among other formats.

and the whole number of cores thing and all that hypathetical bullshit doesnt hold water at all.

Hell most developers admit to only using ONE of the 360s processors thus far on the majority of their 3rd party games.

It all comes down to the developers and their overall knowledge and techincal know-how when it comes to how good games look and play on a any given system , a few quick examples : Kojima (Konami) and the PS2 , Itagi (Tecmo) and the Xbox 1, Capcom and the Gamecube AND the PS2.

No matter how many useless specs are put out there or tech geeks try to rant about what matters most is how developers USE EACH INDIVIDUAL SYSTEMS FEATURES and STRENGHTS TO THE FULLEST to create FUN and entertaining games.

Erk.. only just seen this - sorry!

I picked it up from Toys R Us last year sometime. It's basically an AV selector type thing with a few extras -

- mini PS2 DVD remote (also used to switch scart inputs) and a little slot for it to hide away into.
- a cable to plug into the PS2 memory card and controller port. Handy in my case as it enables me to switch between UK and Jap machine with one cable.
- If you look at the top left and top right corners of the unit you'll see two sockets and two dials. These are actually for Karaoke microphones to be plugged into it - it came with the microphones included too!
- I think there are sockets for three scart inputs and one scart output round the back. If I remember rightly though, RGB isn't supported through this device which was a pain until I got a TV that supported NTSC.

Handy little gadget for £5 anyway.
