Just got a 2nd s-video cable for my n64 and SNES so I can keep one with each system. tried the new one out with my SNES earlier, hooke dit to the switch box and booted up Castlevania 4. loaded up but the colors seemed washed out, didn't seem so apparent with Zelda 3 though. I tested my other cable, which was a gold plated 3rd party and the picture looked bright and colorful.

Is there possibly something not so great about the cables and is the gold-plated ones the way to go?

I would go for the gold, because what the gold does is that it pervents the color and single to be loss before it gets to the TV. Because the new cable doesn't have gold on it, some single is loss before it gets to the TV, which can cause the colors to be "watched out."

Ok so here's a question: is the washed out as I called it, typical with a regular s-video cable, compared to the gold plated? I should check it later with my N64 too. New one i got is all black, other definitly 3rd party is a clear-ish grey where you can see inside the connector (kinda like the N64 color).

I'm not sure that "washed out" is typical with an regular S-Video cable, but some cables are not made well. If you compared it to an gold-plated S-Video cable, then its more often that "washed out" will occur. You can get the same effect with an composite cable if the cable wasn't made well. Golded composite connectors are great if you want to hook up a long video composite wire to a TV. What I do is that I get a 20 ft. composite wire hook up to my tv, then on the other end, I put an golded composite connector on it, and then the other side of the connector I put an video composite cable in it.

I've been looking for a good s-video/gold plated cable, where did you get your first one, and where did you get your 2nd one (so we can avoid them if they look washed out)

I'm surprised at that. The highest frequency in an s-video cable is a little over 4mhz (versus 10s of mhz for RF). Should be very easy to pass the signal unless the cable has a lot of broken strands inside.

The gold one I don't remember where I got it, I think it was a b-day gift a year ago. One I got today I got on ebay from the seller importparadise2004. Found this gold-plated one also:

I'm just wondering if this is natural or if I should try exchanging it (seller has a no refund policy). Screwed up part is it looked great at first play. Turned system off and when I went back later it came out washy..

I don't believe the Genesis supports s-video, so it would be pointless to have it on a cable...

just for your information a gold plated connector will not get you any better color or picture than a regular non-gold connector. what it does is reduces to amount of corrosion and tarnishing that happen on a regular connector since gold dosent corrode. "gold has a better picture" is one of those sellsmans myths. If you cleam your connections the picture should be fine...as long as the cable itself isnt crap

The gold plating on the connectors doesn't do much, if anything for the transfer of signal. The whole point of the gold plating is to prevent corrosion.

*edit* heh. A topic that has been around for hours and I get beat to this post by less than a minute.

The Genesis does support S-Video, but you have to mod it in order for the Genesis to output S-Video singles.

Now I'm getting pissed. Got the Universal cable I mentioned in an above link from Best Buy and one the prongs inside the s-video cable is bent up and won't connect.

I just want a working cable without all these problems!

The Genesis does not support s-video. That's why it has to modified in order to do so.
