Talk about not knowing which forum to put a topic in. Heh.

OK, can anyone think of any music CDs that were pressed on black PSX style discs but have nothing to do with Playstation? I'm not talking about actual PSX games with red book audio (meaning you can play them in a CD player,) I'm talking this is a music CD on a black bottom CD.

What got me thinking about this is around Xmas, I bought the Johnny Cash Legend box set. The CDs are all black bottom discs like PSX games. Kind of approporate for the Man in Black and the label putting it out is Sony. I was just curious if there were any more CDs out there like this that have nothing to do with the Playstation.

8-bit Weapon's C-64 CD is black. They also have a CD, titled Official Bootleg that is red.

I couldn't get either one to work on the CD drive on one of my computers (the color of the discs probably screwed up the laser somehow). I finally got them to work on another CD drive.

Good question. I picked up some CD-r's at a yard sale that were black-bottomed. Couldn't beat the price at the time though, 10 sealed with jewelcases for $1 :)

The first printing of the Fall's Fall Heads Roll album (came out a few months ago) is pressed on a black bottom disc as well, and as far as I know, not a CDR.

Soulwax - Too Many DJs - single
nice black bottomed CD because the whole artwork was set out to look like a proper vinyl record

Sigur Ros - Untitled #1 (Vaka) - 3" single
This is nice, its a 3" CD and it has a black bottom, the whole package looks brilliant, plus the music is amazing

And thats all I have

Now as I'm sure we all know, all official PS games used black [well in actuality they were dark blue] discs. A sure fire way to spot pirates is looking for a PS games on a regular silver CD.

Which leads to the question, what are the differences between the 2 forms anyway?

I dont think there are much diffrent. I used both black CD-R and normal CD-R. Havnt noticed anything diffrent.
Maybe the black discs are smoother on the laser.

If you bought a Jay Z album you should be shot in the face.

It's interesting. I didn't realize there were others out there who used the black CD for music. I know you can get CD-Rs in any color of the rainbow, but I hadn't seen music CDs in color until my Johnny Cash set.

And I don't think black CDs offer any benefits, per se. I think there's some kooky way out audiophile people who think so, but I don't see how that's possible.

I got some Rolling Stones Singles 1968-1971 Box Set that also has the black CD bottoms. All the CDs are made to look like little records, which is why they chose the black CDs I'd bet.
