No for costumes, but i believe it does still count for unlocking Tengu. Or so i've been told.

OK for normal story characters, will count towards tengu
Not OK for unlockable characters (if you want costumes), you must keep them on default to get them. You get costumes for the story characters in story mode.

Kinda sucks that it needs 2 rounds for costumes...Spartan has freaking 7. Luckily I've gotten 4 in Zack's store, as well as 5 in Zack's store as a "random gift". I actually kicked Alpha's ass with Spartan strangely, about 6 minutes through. Bayman though, took !@$#ING FOREVER.

Spartan-148 has a cheap technique that works wonders against Alpha-152. Use her charging punch (Hold Back + P + K)! Alpha will usually teleport right when the punch is executed. If she teleports early, just let go and it'll probably hit her.
