I was just wondering how would you read it unless you take lessons.

I don't read anything. I either guess my way through or hope the game's easy enough to play without a knowledge of the language.

Lessons aren't even necessary to understand some of your imports. Since a large amount of text used in games is already in English, all you need to know is how to translate the katakana into the Roman alphabet, which just takes a katakana chart and a little practice. It won't get you far when it comes to understand plot lines, but it'll make most of the necessary info, like menus and names of characters/places/items/etc., readable. It's so simple that I really don't understand why anyone would want to continue to stumble through their imports for years when it takes so little effort, and it's quite fun. :)

Indeed, quite a bit of text is in katakana/hiragana and so it's just a case of learning the symbols and what syllables they translate into. After that, just working out what the word actually is in English!

Perhaps to find your way through the menues.
but if you wanna understand for example the story of an rpg you shoud be able to understand japanese quite good.

bit OT but MGS3 Subsistence LE 1st print pack comes with 3rd disc which is basically the compilation of all FMV scenes so you can just sit and watch the whole story in one sitting. Sadly it's in Japanese but I will tell ya the story plot is fairy decent though I find bit too much of cliché.. :p
I'd love to see the story of BigBoss and his downfall from the grace... O_O

There are even a few games that don't require ANY Japanese. Two that come to mind would be Phantasy Star Online on Dreamcast and Rez on PS2. Both of these games detect what language your system is currently set to and translate everything that way.

I have the Mrs. translate what I need. It takes about five minutes for her to get sick of that shit. Not the best method ... but I'm pretty fucking lazy.

I used to only import the games I could read. But that got a bit old so I'm learning Japanese :) Rosetta Stone is an awesome program to teach you. I think I'm up to lesson 5 (which means I can't say jack, I have some idea of simple words, and I'm starting to learn hiagana characters).

Euro games are superior in the fact that there is around 5 languages to choose from at the start of most games. America and Japan need to sort their shit out and do the same.

What I hate about about import gaming:
Hi, would you like 4324324677 Gil and be my friend?
> Nah, I don't need your money get out of my face!
> Yes, please!
"Shit... Uhhhh... I'll go for the first one."

Ummm... should I bother, or just wait for the mods to delete your trolling?

Actually Lozza does have a point about the multilingual part. One Japanese game I know of that has that feature is PC Engine Ninja Gaiden where you put a code in to put it in English or Chinese.
