I can't stand it, damn near every game I really want, just to play (I don't give a damn about colector's value, rarity
issues etc.) just happen to be worth a fortune! WHY?! It's like some god is up there setting prices just to keep things out of my range, so I can stew here tiring of the games I have.

Here are some games I'm itching to play, check it out-
game -average price (USD)

SEGA SATURN

Batsugun -$70.00
Tengai: Sengoku Blaede -$70-90.00
D&D collection -$120.00 (I got this for $60! including it as an example)
Cotton Boomerang -Cant find it!
Elevator Action Returns -$80.00
Radiant Silvergun -$100-200.00
Dracula X -$70-200.00

PC ENGINE/DUO

Sapphire -$100.00+ (Plus the cost of an arcade card, also expensive)
Sylphia -$80-100.00
Spriggan $60-70.00
Fausette Amour-$80.00+
Dracula X -$90-160.00

NEO GEO

Ninja Master's -$600-1,000.00
Blazing Star -$600-1,000.00+
SvC Chaos-$120-200.00
Breakers Revenge -$150-400.00
Sengoku 3 -$185.00

I really don't know if I'll ever get to have any Neo Geo games beyond the cheap old ones. I just don't have $200.00 or whatever to spend on one single game, when I can use that to get more Saturn and PC Engine titles (There are a few that are at a decent price)

I can get a couple of those things on PS2 collections but my PS2's not modded and I don't feel like getting into that right now.

Woe is me, you know? Back to playing Star Soldier.

You know, if you only want to play the games, you really should invest in an MVS or a converter for your AES (assuming you have one). There's absolutely no reason to buy all the games in AES form beyond collector's reasons. You could get Blazing Star for 50 bucks on MVS.

Also, when possible, you should give the games a try before you buy if you haven't already. You may just find that not all the big bucks games are all they're cracked up to be, so then you could scratch some off your list.

Oh, and regarding the arcade card, to the best of my knowledge, it only came out in Japan, right? Because mine wasn't expensive, and I saw a brand new, still sealed one sell for about $16 on eBay not long ago. The Arcade Card Pro is more expensive than the Arcade Card Duo, obviously, but it still shouldn't break the bank.

Ugh. Yeah, your taste in games seems to exceed your budget.

They don't seem that expensive to me. I can get them, but it's always my mind telling me don't be stupid to waste $100+ on 1 used game. And I always backed out.

SEGA SATURN

Cotton Boomerang -Cant find it!

There are three on ebay now... average price is $103. I guess that doesn't help much. Oh, well. It can be an expensive hobby depending on what you collect!

Elevator Action Returns ain't $80. It's not $50 anymore, but $80...well, maybe if it had the spine card and was mint.

Nice list there, don't really care for some of those Saturn games (they're lower on the list, far, far lower for me), and I flat out refuse to get the Saturn Dracula X.

The damn thing has a text file hidden inside from the developers apologizing for the unpolished nature of the game. Yes, it does have new music, and it does have a couple new areas, but it's really not worth the price, IMO.

I also wasn't impressed by Sengoku 3, but I want to play it again. I'd be infinitely happier with Sengoku 2, myself. Don't knock the "cheap old" AES games; some of them are all time classics. :)

Ninja Master's is good, but I would go for the whole Samurai Spirits series and both Last Blade games first (in my case, just missing Samurai Spirits V Special - I'll skip V regular and non-fixed Special - and the Last Blade games). Curious lack of Metal Slug on there too.

Good news on Elevator Action Returns. It's on the Taito Memories Joukan compilation for the import PS2. A pretty faithful port, along with 24 other arcade classics to boot (Warning: Unfortunately there is no TATE mode for the vertical monitor games, just a standard yoko mode)!

that's not good news for the OP though....he said he doesn't have a modded PS2 and doesn't want to get into that right now.....

Just buy the games and resell them after you are done playing them. Most of the games you listed all have high resale values, so you should have no problem selling the game for the price you paid.

Same sort of deal with Sengoku Blade. There was a import PS2 rerelease a few months ago. (http://cgi.ebay.com/Sengoku-Ace-Sengoku-Blade-TAITO-BEST-PS2-IMPORT-JP_W0QQitemZ8250334828QQcategoryZ62053QQssPageName ZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)

See, Sometimes it IS worth it to get games when they come out. :D

Some collectors like to say they dont buy new games and wait for the price to go down.. but that doesn't make sense to me. If you want the game.. get it fresh and new when it's easy to get at the store! As you can see it just might get hard (or pricier) to find later on the second hand market :P

I'll focus all of my mental power and try to make all of those games cheaper for you.

::massive mental strain::

Nothing? Damn.

I want several of those games too, but there is no point in complaining about it. It's called capitalism. Supply and demand, ya know? Things are worth what people are willing to pay for them...and apparently, many people are willing to pay more than you.

I'm sorry if you just want to play them, but a lot of other people want to play them too...or display them on a shelf, or whatever. The fact that you just want to play it doesn't mean games should be cheaper. If you just want to play, maybe you should be going after beat up, or less than perfect copies of games...or bootlegs (ick!) and Roms (ack!).

Either bite the bullet or live without. I prefer the prior.

Lots of collectors on this board. Many don't want to buy, play, and then resell. Maybe the original poster does, though.

This is not an attempt to take this thread in a sour direction.

To be the devil's advocate, many of those listed above can be found in the seedy realm of the internet for free. If you have no interest in collecting said titles for their value, a mod chip is your answer, with the exception being the Neo Geo stuff. I know these systems fall into the area where DP does not advocate emulation, and I apologize if I have crossed the line (mods don't kill me), but it remains an option if you are not morally opposed to it.

I will admit that I have taken said route to get the chance to "see what all the fuss is about" with certain games due to the same reasons this thread was started. :shameful: I will also add to that the fact that, for me, it is never quite the same as opening the package and seeing a personal grail shining in your hands. It can be an incredible and tough investment that may not retain its value every time, but its worth it, isn't it? I bought Rakugaki Showtime toward the end of last year and, despite the fact that it is notoriously mediocre, finally holding it in my hands was truly mind-blowing. Radiant Silvergun and Dracula X held the same joy and I wish everyone could get some.

On the other hand, it was cool to finally play something like Psychic Killer Taromaru and not feel like I'd been had. :-D

Have you ever considered (not just the original poster, all of us in general) that you want to play the games because they're pricey, as opposed to wanting to play them and they happen to be pricey?

It's an easy trap to fall into - after all, the pricey ones are the ones we talk the most about.

They're only expensive if you ignore the resale value.
You could buy any of those games, play it to death, and then sell it, and only lose the cost of shipping.

a lot of neo geo people with that thinking probably had a bad awakening when the prices dropped extremely because of the re-releases.

I usually oppose emus, but nobody is gonna kil you when you play Sapphire on emu.

I have one of those already. It's just that all these guys keep taking my money.

I want several of those games too, but there is no point in complaining about it. It's called capitalism. Supply and demand, ya know? Things are worth what people are willing to pay for them...and apparently, many people are willing to pay more than you.

Yeah, I know how all that works, but what I'm complaining about is how my taste in games always seems to lead me to these rather obscure things that turn out to be really valuable.

I mean, when I go to video game stores, I go the the Ps2, Xbox etc. racks and see hundereds and hundereds of popular video games that don't interest me at all; I mean nothing... When I finally do find a game I want, I have to buy a mod chip, tear my console apart, pull the guts out, do surgery, pay some ridiculous ammount of money for this game plus shipping across the pacific ocean... why's it gotta be so hard? Just whining about my luck, that's all. Everyone gets to whine about their luck every now and then, right?

Oh, and I have played all of these on emulators and whatnot. (Otherwise I wouldn't know if I want them!) But... you know how it is... it's not the same...

Elevator Action Returns

Try MAME for this one. I play it all the time. Some of those others are probably on MAME I'll have to check. MAME is perfect if all you really want is to see how they play before you buy them. 8-)

I guess that I’ve found that many (not all) of the more expensive games aren’t expensive because they are amazing titles, it’s because they’re rare. Some are great to play (Metal Slug on the NEO is one good example) but others, like Dracula X on the Turbo Duo I found disappointing. I prefer the much cheaper and more attainable Symphony of the Night for the PS1. Cheaper game, easy to find system.

Nobody wants to say it because the only people who ever *do* say it are typically warez doodz who pay for zilch and can't understand why anybody else does. Not exactly an attitude that supports the hobby. Plus who wants every thread to end with "but just get the romz dood!"
