Polaroid seems to be branching out even farther from their traditional instant-but-washed-out photography model (they already sell all kinds of CE gear that tends to fly below the radar), as they were showing off yet two more non-imaging devices at CES. The first was an 80GB PMP with a nice-looking widescreen display that will supposedly be available in the fall for $600. Even more curious was some sort of PSP-like portable gaming console that may not be destined for the States judging by the non-English characters on its screen. Whatever regions are getting this will see it in August, although neither price nor other minor deets (processor, graphics, resolution, titles, networking capabilities, PMP features, etc.) were available.

Dude wtf? That looks a little bit too much like a PSP. The buttons have the exact same configuration. That circle under the buttons is exactly the same, and the color on the letters of the buttons is exactly the same (and in the same positions) as the 4 buttons of the PSP.
The texturing towards the top is also just like the texturing on the PSP, although in a different location.
The charge button is also in the same location, and is the same amber color.
If this is real, someone's gonna get sued.

Interesting comments on the article; somebody found the company the name is being licensed to.

Polariod for $600? Either they got some tips from Nokia or this is too early for an April Fool's joke...

Check the link in my second post. Polaroid's just lending their brand name.

HAHA. What does a camera company know about games?
Ask Fairchild Camera & Instrument, inventors of cartridge-based games!
Oh...wait. Never mind. ;)

I'll never buy anything that says Polaroid on it. I live in Rochester, home of George Eastman founder of Kodak. My mother has worked at Kodak for 30 years, it would be a mortal sin in my family. Viva la Kodak!

Good call, I recently bought a Kodak Digital camera for my father during Christmas. Why Kodak? Because it's a product we have always trusted for 30 years almost

Actually, this thread (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=77672) talks about a lot of these new devices. If you haven't seen it, you might want to check it out...

Funny, I lived in Rochester for about 23 years, and I'd say almost the exact opposite.
It's sad to me that Polaroid has reached this point. As a company they made some poor choices. Hopefully they can find a way to save the film division.
The handheld looks like a cludge. Maybe it was made just to test people's reactions. If so, I'd say the reaction was pretty clear.

Ah, this is interesting - the company that developed this portable (the Peters Group, so it seems) bought Polaroid in April last year. So I suppose you could say this really is a Polaroid product...in the sense that the brand name is being used to lend credibility.

Hmmmm, "A, B, X, Y," maybe it's some kind of portable reverse SNES emulator.

Kodak and Polaroid are both in some financial trouble, Kodak only less so. They both missed the boat of the digital age big time to Canon and Nikon.

HAHA. What does a camera company know about games?
Um, Sony makes digital cameras too you know.
If they are trying to emulate Sony they won't have to make too many games before they catch up with the PSP's game library.

$600? That's a good way to enter the gaming industry and draw potential buyers to build a fan base.
By the way, what's the most expensive handheld that's out there thus far?

Unless i'm wrong, The most expensive one would be the gizmondo, without the ads. ($400)

nintendo has nothing to fear by this. sounds similar to the launch of N-gage. i just picked up an N-gage and games only because i got half the library and a system for less than $200. I don't know many people that will jump on board with a $600. hand held system. people complain when a console is more than $500. thats one of the reasons why nintendo is successful. they market their products at a price that nearly everyone can afford.
bring on the new polaroid hand held and as soon as i can pick one up with half the library for less than $200. i'll own one. LOL
