I just recently got a PS2 ( yes I know I'm behind the times ) and I heard that the PS2 version of RE 4 was better (including a mission with ada in the town) than the GC version. I'm a fan of the series so I'd be interested to know if it would be worth getting a copy and trading in the GC Version. I dont need both, so I was wondering which of the 2 was worth playing.

Personally i find the GC version to be the better one because the sound isn't horribly over compressed, the cutscenes are all real time so when you change your costume it stays during the cut scenes, and the control scheme is more comfortable.

The only thing the PS2 version offers over the GC is a new mission with Ada (which is cool) and some new weapons and costumes, which are questionable.

All in all it more or less comes down to personally preference.

Within days of the PS2 version's release (or...before its release, perhaps), somebody on a foreign forum had taken pictures of a whole bunch of locations in the PS2 and GC versions to compare.

Leon's hair is darker, more brown.
When jumping out of the house, it seemed like the glass that hits the ground around your impact point wasn't there.
Some trees were smaller/shorter.
Textures in the village were different (some rock walls in the GC version had little flecks of color - like red or green). Again, it's simply gray this time.
The Thompson submachine gun looks awful now. The stick magazine has been taken off in place of a very polygonal looking drum, and (maybe it was the screenshots I've seen, but I doubt it) the texture on it looks worse.
There are two more extra costumes...as said, they aren't the greatest stuff you've ever seen.

Those were really the only things that stuck out to me. I don't know about the framerate, but the loading times are said to be longer.

The extra mission (about 5 hours according to the BradyGames guide) probably makes this one a no-brainer if you don't mind playing through the game to get to it. I would keep the GC version, though.

Thanks. Its kind of a toss up for me. I wouldn't mind the extra mission but in the same respect I dont know if I want to sacrifice the quality. I'm a fan of the series which kind of makes me interested, but, I dont know if its worth paying for a 2nd copy basically. maybe i'll wait till the price comes down more and when I trade in a few games.

My advice is keep the GC version and rent the PS2 version.

Ditto. The extra mission is nice, but to me not incentive enough to sacrafice the beauty that in the GCN version.

i've heard alot of love for this game everywhere i go, just wondering if anyone can compare the gameplay to other titles?

i don't have a gamecube and my ps2 doesn't get much love, so i was wondering if there are any xbox titles with the same type of gameplay elements so i have a point of reference? resident evil games in the past have turned me off for various reasons, and i haven't played any from this gen, and to be honest why pay $5 for a rental when you can get it used for $20? so i was hoping for some input

Thx

Cold Fear has sort of similar gameplay, but really there is no comparision.

If you have a Gamecube I would by the GC one over the PS2 version. If you don't have a Gamecube but have a PS2 then pick it up. The game is better on GC but the PS2 one isn't by any means bad and the extra content makes up for the graphics, the controls in the PS2 version are well done, but the GC one is much better.

As far as the core game is concerned GC does it better.

I have the Gamecube and PS2 versions of RE4. The extra's on the PS2 version are nice, but the Gamecube blows the PS2 version out of the water in terms of graphics and sound.

I love my PS2, but the Gamecube wins this round without question.

Between the two,

the Cube would have to be the best, because of the full feel and sound purposes. Plus it's direct and to the point when it comes to storyline. You get the Mercs mode and "Assignment Ada" as well.

PS2 verison however, I really considered a good rental. The extra costumes and Ada's side mission is so-so. Yet you do get all the goodies from the Cube verison as well.

Sure the PS2 sounds good, but if you want to play the game as it was truly meant to be, then go with GameCube.

I'm probably go with the PS2 version now if given the choice, because of the extra content. I got the GC version the day it came out, played through it, solid lovely game. Played the PS2 version a bit at my friends house and doesn't quite look as smooth but the difference really isn't mindblowing and hardly an issue, to me anyway.

This is directed at no one in particular. Honest.

It's interesting to me that alot of Nintendo "fanboys" or what-have-you will swear up and down that gaming is about gameplay and not graphics. Then we come to the RE:4 debate ... Here we find those very same GameCube fans swear that RE:4 is better on the GameCube, primarily due to the graphics. Some people may prefer the GameCube controller to the PS2 controller (god knows why ... j/k), but clearly the PS2 version delivers significantly more gameplay, without much loss in graphical quality at any rate. Just an amusing occurance.

The reason why is that the GC controller was designed for RE. Just try playing with the GC then Playing with the PS2.

The Diamond position doesn't work as well.

Actually the controls on the PS2 verison of RE4 isn't that bad at all I'd say.

Another possibility on why some would say it's comfortable on Cube, because we spent the past few years playing Resident Evil on Cube then PS2 before RE4 showed up.

Think of it this way, Quality to quantity really. I have both. Just my ps2 is chipped ;)

I'd have to agree that it's purely preference. I loved the GCN release and got it on day one... I loved the PS2 release just as much because I got to experience the game again with some more extras. All in all the real winner here is RE4 fans... get both :)

I'm sorry to go off topic a bit but is it just me or are extra costumes the most retarded and un -useful unlockable ever? Why does so many game companies think that they're offering us a huge bonus by including an unlockable wardrobe?

"Oh look, now she's wearing a nice blue dress. Let's play the whole game all over again" x_x

The armor...does it add a 30% bonus? The "gangster" clothes make Leon look stupid, though.

/me imagines Ashley dressed up King-style... o_O

Also off-topic: quick, is there a way to determine whether a copy of RE2/3 on the GC is original, or reprint? Just curious (saw a couple in lousy shape at GameStop).

I personally prefer the PS2 version. Why? Because the PS2 version allows me to enjoy the game in a truly widescreen presentation, unlike the Gamecube version. No matter what style television you play the cube version on, you get the black bars. On the PS2 version, I can change that and set it up in 16:9 and enjoy the experience on my widescreen tv....without the bars.

Also, I'm used to the Resident Evil control on a playstation controller...so it feels more natural.

Plus I love Sony. Please Nintendo fanboys, put down the sniper's rifles and stay out of the watertowers near my house.

Wow, who would have thought one question would get such interesting responses. I do appreciate them all though. I might end up getting it on PS2 just because I can play it there and see if i think it sworth keepin them both. Either way I'm going to have fun with it just becuase I love the game.

When the hell are you gonna realize that you are a SONY FANBOY! I prefer the PS2 version over the GC as well, but you always seem to want to turn any fucking Nintendo thread into a fanboy thread.

I too am a huge fan of this game (got the cube version on release day) and have been asking myself the same question lately. I play the cube version zoomed on my WS TV as someone mentioned above and it looks excellent. I am however still considering getting the PS2 version just for the extras.

Personally, i like the PS2 version better, mostly because of the extra game, that alone is well worth the price of admission. :)

the PS2 version is a bit harder (a lot less ammo and some of the "bosses" are harder) the GC version just floods you with ammo!

i do perfer the GC controller! (it just fits so well) :)

if you can live with the poorer graphics, you will love it!

happy gamming!

My advice is keep the GC version and rent the PS2 version.

I've beaten both, the Cube version is simply more superior.

Yes, the PS2 version has some extras, but sadly weren't as good as I thought they were going to be.

I'd rather have tighter controls, better graphics, and better sound than a few extras. The Ada mission was fun thought, but the 5 to 6 extra hours they were claiming it was going to be is ridiculous, it took 2 hours.

Chill out chief. This is a RE thread debating the merits of both versions. I put my opinion in and you cream your pants. Flattering. I've lived and played through EVERY console-era, and I've shouted the merits of Nintendo from the rooftops on many an occasion. There's a blatant pro-Nintendo anti-Sony trend on the boards, and the PS2 vs. GC Resident Evil debate is a fine example of it. Quit making fanboy threads and I'll quit posting in them.

I must say the man has a point here. I've heard this come up plenty of times as well. Gameplay usualy wins over graphics for me.

The gameplay vs graphics arguement doesn't apply in this case. I think it's safe to say the gameplay is the same in both versions of RE4. It's just that the Gamecube version has better graphics, and sound and therefore is the better overall game.

Its easier actually, since its a variant of the PAL release. Just they made it harder by giving you less bullets.

But in this case the gameplay "enhancements" is essentially a bonus mission -- not the end of the world. The game itself plays identical and half of the experience of RE4 *are* the amazing sound and graphics. If you're playing through the game for the first time -- and you have the choice of both -- you're depriving yourself of the total RE4 experience by playing the PS2 version.

Well I love the GC version, and I bought the GC mainly because of the RE Games becuase I was under the impression they had an exclusive deal for those games. Ironically, it was the first Nintendo system I ever bought lol. I was a Sega person myself ( still have my original SMS ) so it seemed odd buying a nintendo =)

Having played though the GC version 3 times and working on the ps2 version my second time, I must say both are excellent and neither is greater then the other.

A graphical difference that no one seems to notice is that the lighting effects in the ps2 version are fake while real in the GC version. Dont belive me? Knife a torch and see what happens.

Sound isn't gread on the ps2 it sounds muffled.

On the other hand mission ada is really fun and give you a good 5 hr quest.

I like the mafia suit it goes well with the tompson. I haven't goten as far as the armor outfit but I hear that it protects her for being arrowd and picked up and taken away.

Get both and have a blast.

Edit _ I forgot some time very rarly the ps2 version will drop frames mostly during merciaries only seen it one or twice in the main missions.
