Is this cartridge required for the original Sega CD unit to work or is it simply for saving games?

If you get into Sega CD gaming one of these is an eventual purchase since the onboard RAM is tiny compared to the cartridge. Nothing like wiping out your hard earned save data to make room for other saves.

If you're looking for one I have a loose SCD RAM Cart in my B/S thread...

Couple games kind of need it, like Shining Force CD, internal RAM only has enough space for 1 quest, but with the cart, you can finish quest 1, 2, and that gives you acsess to quest 3.

I've got one in my sale thread as well, but I might keep it as a spare since I've only stumbled on one.

Thanks for the information and the offers but the reason I asked was because I've got a Sega CD unit that I can't seem to get working and thought the RAM cartridge might be the answer. It didn't come with a manual so I'm not sure if I have all of the cables and/or parts needed to connect it correctly to the Genesis console.

Funny thing is, it would almost be cheaper to buy another Sega CD unit than the Ram cart. :D

I tried that, worked for a while until I tried playing through Shining Force CD and couldn't advance past the first chapter. Had to eventually break down and pick up a card.
