So.

A lot of us have Famicoms. A lot of us have Famicom Disk Systems.

Unfortunately, not a lot of us can speak/read Japanese.

This thread is devoted to those Famicom and FDS games that gaijin like us would have no problem playing, regardless of our native language.

So how about it? Obviously, most RPGs are out due to the sheer amount of text within them. But there have to be a good number of games released for the Famicom and FDS that contain a minimal amount of Japanese.

I think it would be best to keep this thread limited to Famicom/FDS games that did NOT see a port to the US. So "Pro Wrestling" is out, but "F1 Race" is welcome.

What would the best idea be? Just have everyone add his/her suggestions below? Or would it help for me to continue editing this first post into one master list? It might help for followup posts to contain a VERY brief description of the game in question (ex. "RPG," "overhead shooter," etc.) followed by a description of just how much Japanese is in the game. For example, "Devil World" = No Japanese text at all, "Metroid" = Title/Menu screens in Japanese, etc.

Any takers?

SMB 2 and All Night Nippon-no Japanese text
Doki Doki Panic-No Japanese text
Falsion-No Japanese text (the 3D function doesn't seem to work too well, though)

From all the Famicom Disks I have, some of them are highly playable without much knowledge of Japanese. (I personnaly can read Japanese but it is still a slow and painful process). It is funny that you mention FDS, I'm about to add game reviews on my site :)
Anyway, from what I have been able to test

Esper Dream (Action/RPG) - some Japanese, especially in the village, but most of the rest of the world is action based.

Moero Twinbee (Shooter) - released in US as Stinger without the 3 players option

Zanax (Shooter) - Released in US

Arumana no Kiseki (Action/Platform)

Nakayama Miho no Tokimeki Highschool (Digital Comic) - a lot of Japanese text. But no Kanjis are used as far as I remember, so it is possible to translate some of the text without a deep knowledge of Japanese. But strong basics are needed.

Breeder (action) - but the game sucks

A lot of FDS will be reviewed on my site soon, I'll let you know as soon as they are online.

Famicom titles that are EASILY playable and good without Jp knowledge and haven't been ported here:

Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti
Star Wars (Namco)
Crisis Force (Konami)
Devil World (Nintendo)
Getsu Fuu Ma Den (Konami)
Holy Diver (Irem)

All ones I have and IMO some of the best out there. Holy Diver is BRUTALLY difficult tho :D
