"Clocktower" for the Super Famicom
Man, no joke: I was staring at the titlescreen for 5 minutes,Sort of like hypnotized. The "music" alone at the titlescreen....unholy mother of all fears.
A 2D horror masterpiece with lots of adventure elements and really frightening atmosphere. This one really puts the playstation ones to shame.

I played it on my gamecube via SNES emulation. There is a english patched rom out there, so grab it and play it.

Any other "classic" (pre playstation-era) horror games which you can recommend me?

It's the original "Clocktower"....the mother of the playstation ones.and far better IMO

I wanted to check out "Sweet home" for a long time but I simply forgot about it.thanx for the reminder dude!

I heard that "Sweet Home" was possibly the very first survival horror game ever and that the Resident Evils borrowed MANY things from it(even the name "RE").

I gotta watch the movie too someday, although it isn't really based on the game(or vice versa)

Far as I know, there's no relation between Sweet Home (also "Suito Homu") and the Clock Tower series. Sweet Home was based off a movie, and Clock Tower is just Clock Tower.

Resident Evil borrowed the door opening sequences, and there was some item management, but it's pretty simple and doesn't involve chests.

The "name borrowing" myth arose from a gag the translators put into the game (when you're on a balcony near 2/3rds into the game, you'll find a note), and wasn't in the original game.

Clock Tower [the First Fear] was the orig title that got me totally interested in horror.

Unfortunately, all its sequals don't stand up to the first.

SFC Clock Tower was indeed the first in the series. Clock Tower on PSX was a remake I think?

I don't know the 2nd one (clock tower PSX) was a really great followup, direct sequal to the storyline and improved upon Scissorman's AI. In the first game you could reuse the same hiding spot to your heart's content, but in the sequal if you didn't mix things up a bit the killer would catch on and kill you.

My only complaint is that the game really looked like ass in 3D, especially compared to great 2D visuals from the first one.

Never tried the 3rd game, but the PS2 one was decent. Hard as balls though. Once the game thrusts you into panic mode there's too long a period before the gameplay calms down again. You'll run to five or six hiding places in a frenzy while the killer's on your ass. Then of course you die and have to repeat the whole process. I did like the whole first person perspective while hiding, you can hear your character's breathing and the camera bounces to reflect it. The whole series as been really brilliant about making the player tense with the use of sound, like the slow methodically footsteps in the first game.

Really want to try out Haunting Ground, not part of the series officially, but like the 4th Clock Tower (PS2) was developed by Capcom and supposedly plays exactly like Human's original Clock Tower.

Clock Tower's my favorite Survival Horror series. :P

The PSX version we saw here in the US was the sequal, although there is a PSX port of the original SFC game in Japan. The only real difference between the two is that the PSX game includes FMV cutscenes.

How well does the GC handle SNES emulation?

clock tower for the sfc is a great game! I also love clock tower 3, i know alot of people dont like it-most of the complaints ive heard is about lack of weapons, but they fail to see thats its allure-its not a shootemup. They clump all horror under resident evil.. anyway- at first i didnt get ct3, but after dying a couple times i really got into it! played in the dark-and in surround sound works wonders, especially when that music kicks in letting you know that the killers on their way-and i loved how they would call alyssa.. and the panic meater=awesome! I honestly really liked the story, but ive noticed alot of guys wont give a game a chance if its too girlie-ffx2, etc.. anyway-thats my two cents!

CT on PS1 gave me the biggest heart attack a video game ever did.

When Scissorman JUMPED outta that painting in the mansion HOLY SHIT!!!! I dropped the controller to the ground as a natural reaction I was so scared... and ain't afraid to admit it :P

I loved that game and played it to death I felt it was very overlooked and innovative for its time.

Sweet-Home question: Just began to play it and I'm already stuck...oh well.In one of the first "rooms"(the right one....just after the entry),there's no light just darkness and something like "You have to fall to continue" written on a letter. What do I have to do here?
thanx

Understood!

Still, thought I'd take a moment to clear up a common Sweet Home misconception (one I had until recently, as well).

The thinking goes like this: "Resident Evil" is not the name of the series in Japan (that was "BIOHAZARD"), and the name was changed to that at the behest of Capcom USA. Unless the original script does have a "place of residing evil" quote, which somebody at Capcom USA picked up on (which is highly unlikely), this is just a myth started after people (like me :D ) played the translated ROM.

Haven't played Sweet Home in forever, but don't one of your characters have a flashlight? Try using them in the darkness.

I was shocked in third one when... erm... spoiler alert...

The killer bashes that little girl to death with the sledge hammer. Even horror movies won't go as far as to kill children on screen.

mmhh..I've tried that already....didn't work.
I'm pretty sure that you have to do something in team-mode(or at least the letter says so)
argh....this makes me crazy

Struggle Within wasn't given a PAL release, I still want it though, even if most reviews dismiss it as highly flawed. Haven't seen it ever here yet.

my two pennies...

I was a late bloomer to horror gaming, it was not until silent hill 1 that I got hooked in college.

Before it I had tried RE1, but could never get fully into it, though the first hunter made me send the controller flying.

Clock Tower 3 on the PS2 was the only one of that series I have played, but I thought it was a blast. Truly SURVIVAL Horror indeed...

i know what you mean! that scene made me sad-but also cemented my interest in the whole story.. and i at first detested the boss battles- till i learned how it worked (didnt have a manual) after my first boss fight i couldnt wait till the next one!
well that one and the one about-SPOILERS KINDA..

the toymaker and his blind mom being dumped in a vat of acid-then wandering around looking for each other..

i think im gonna go play that game again! and ive beaten it multiple times..
