Well, its due to oxidization of the plastic so maybe being in the box would matter if it was still in the plastic in the box. Otherwise, all consoles don't necessarily yellow. There are still some minty snes consoles with no yellowing on them.

My first SNES that I got for Christmas 1992 turned yellow. It was a Super NES SUPER SET like the one in the picture below. I think it took about 5 years before I really noticed it turning the yellow color.

My other SNES that I bought from my friend after my first one broke down hasn't changed colors at all. My first one was manufactured in 1992, and the one I have now I think was manufactured in 1994 or 1995...if that has to do with anything.

when it was made is the factor i am looking here.

I was talking with a customer where I work once, and he brought up that the old SNES systems that were made in China had impurities in the plastics that were used. Those systems are the ones that apparantly went yellow over time (Had sand or some other foreign substance in the plastic goo mix).
Not sure how much validity that story holds, but its an interesting one.

Both of my Model 2 SNESes (still the only rev I own...I want S-Video, sigh) are unfaded/pristine gray. If looks matter (even over video output), the Model 2 has a lot going for it, apparently. Good plastic and it saves space, but you can't hook it up via S-Video, just the three RCA jacks (red/white/yellow).
I used to have an Adam, which turned even darker yellow (keyboard)
also my C-128 turned yellow, my Atari Mega ST, always mostly the keyboard (with ST also the HDD casing)
I got a Game Boy.
First I thought it's due to smoking, but I don't smoke.

I have a SNES model 1 that I bought at a flea market, it has no yellowing in the plastic, only on the controller ports (weird huh?)
How can I tell what year it was released? My g/f's SNES is yellowed, and they have another one that is yellowed.

I've been told it was because Nintendo used cheaper recycled plastics for some of their Super NES's.
Which would fall in line with the impurities mentioned above.

As far as I know the only way to find out the age of your Super Nintendo is to open it and check the date on the circuit board.
There were at least two major releases in the original SNES style, one with the sound chip component, and one with the sound integrated.

I have some cartridges that look like that, except the darker top half is fine, but the back half isn't. I think I have a few games like this, but the one that comes to mind is my import copy of Super R-Type for SFC.

I own 3 SNES Systems.
One is Half yellowed, and is an Ex Rental, so it could have been in the hands of smokers.
One is the Bulky type, and is Grey. The previous owner smoked a lot, too.
The last one is a Mini, wich is the one i use. It is not yellow. (Someone show me a picture of a yellow, Mini SNES that has NOT gone through a paint mod)
I also have a few SNES carts that are partially yellowed, but not completely. I bought most of these with the grey, bulky SNES. Not every SNES cart bought with it is yellowed.

my snes has ZERO yellow, and is form 1993 and is made in japan. my famicom that i use has zero yellowing. but my friends famicom looks like someone pissed on it, and his SNES has a super yellow top, but fine bottom. and HE DOESN'T SMOKE. he's cleaner than a mofo, and his stuff wasn't exposed to light. i wonder wat's up with that crap? also i noticed the yellowed plastic is brittle as hell, it just breaks with no effort.

Some of my SNES carts are doing that. And finally after 10 years the system itself is starting to show some signs of it. I think it's inevitable. Lesson here is never use gray plastics.
I've got 4, all of them well played and some of them well abused, look like an animal got at them.
No yellow.
From what I've seen, it's the plastic, older models seem to have "new" plastic, while the later batches had recycled plastics.

I got my US SNES in 92 and it has gradually gone yellowish over the years. Not that bad at least... it isn't that far.
be honest guys, it's slowly tints to the exact color of your soul, as you well know nintendo is connected to us from youth.
Sick yellow bastards, repent!

i purchased an snes and an nes about 10 months ago for about $45 shipped, the snes is not yellow at all. I wonder what nintendo says if you call them up and yell that your snes turned yellow from sitting in the box?

My first SNES I bought brand new in January 1997. Back then the pack-in game was Yoshi's Island. Anyway, it never yellowed. So it's possible that Nintendo reverted to using a non-yellowing type of plastic toward the end of the SNES era...

My SNES has yellowed over the years (made in Mexico). My gf's uncle has a SNES that hasn't yellowed at all (made in Japan). I'm just saying.

My snes is still as grey as it was in 1994. Oh yeah, some people's sneses are brown, just like your mexican cousins.
