Sega Saturn internal battery

How hard is it to change the internal battery in a sega saturn? Anyone know how? How long does the battery usually last?

Simple, just open up the door on the back of the unit and there it is.

It's insanely easy. I think it's just a standard CR2032 (check to be certain). There should be a little plastic door on the back that you can open up, and you'll see it quite clearly on the board. The hardest part is popping it out of that little holder. A small flat-head screwdriver might help here, but be careful you don't damage the clips. I'm not sure exactly how long they last, but I'd imagine you'll at least get a couple years out of it.

I think the first battery on my #1 Saturn console lasted 5yrs roughly before it had to be replaced.

Yeah, they're really easy to change, just open the flap, remove the old one and put the new one in. They generally last about 5 years or so, and can be found at places like CVS.

And yes, it's a small door on the back of the console, easy as changing batteries in a remote control.

THey're CR2032's (VMU batteries). Mine have never lasted more then three years. Very easy to replace, though.

What about the Dreamcast battery? My DC system battery is dead.

The Dreamcast battery is almost impossible to replace. I dont know what kind it is but first it has soldered on connectors, second its like a CR2064 or somthing (Larger than a CR2032) I know some people know how to fix them,im glad mine still works.

It's a rechargable 2032, so no CR. You should know these things alec006 since you've started many a threads concerning these cels. LOL

that starts off as a comparitive discussion between button cel sizes turns into an explanation about rechargable cels (that don't have a CR before them and most of the time will read rechargable) and standard cels (which have a CR before the number).


What I was saying is that the rechargable battery has gone bad in one of my many DC's (they WILL go bad over time, rechargables don't last forever), and was pointing out that you can't simply replace the cel with a standard CR2032. So if the SCD battery is indeed rechargable, then "CR2016 vs CR2032" shouldn't even be an issue since it will try to charge either, causing possible damage to the battery - unless you modify the feedback circuit as DogP noted.

And "authorized Sega repair center" ha, they won't work on your DC's. And the "no user-serviceable parts" crap concerns everything, they just don't want a lawsuit if you fry your ass replacing a power supply or laser assembly.

Why they hell couldn't they just keep it simple like with the Saturn?

You must replace a bad internal Dreamcast battery with another RECHARGABLE 2032 cel, NOT a CR2032 which notes that it is NOT RECHARGABLE. Again, for the record, if it has a CR it is NOT RECHARGABLE and CANNOT be used in place of a rechargable cel. The reason for this is the Dreamcast will attempt to recharge the non-rechargable cel and cause it to burst or leak.


Yup, if a 2032 cel is rechargable it'll usually say "RECHARGABLE" on the positive side of the cel itself.

I will admit that the thread I linked up there has a lot of BS posts which make things confusing but stick to what DogP says as between him and myself we seemed to get it back on track by the end.
