AWESOME. I just saw this and I'm at work until Midnight. I don't really do a damn thing at work though, so I'll be able to chunk through some of this before I leave tonight.
The easiest way I've thought about doing this is just by how much sheer enjoyment I've recieved from any game, ever. Even though you'd never find and EverQuest icon on my desktop, or even any of the physical games (threw them away a while ago), it's easily taking my #1 spot. Any game that can entertain me for 3000 hours is special, something fierce.
Putting it in that light, it'll be pretty easy. Even though I've only ever played through FFII maybe 4 times and other RPG's have definitely commanded more of my time, it's definitely the one I enjoy the most.
Yeah, this'll be easy and will give me something to do for the rest of my shift. Awesome.

I finally sent mine out...about 5 minutes ago, still before midnight in the Eastern time zone. I asked if I'd get a special prize for being last but now it sounds like I may not even be the last one to submit one. Ah well...I just typed it out ratta-tat-tat...no time to think, just type 'em up and send 'em out.

yeah, I'm getting impatient myself.
BTW couldn't you put everyone's lists into an array in C or matlab and rank them according to their address?
i.e. each column is a different person's list and corresponds to a score array, row 1 woudl be the top picks and be given a score of 25 in a scores array.
so list[1,#]= scores[1,#] ==25,
list[2,#]= scores[2,#]==24
etc
Then you could construct setup a scoring count in a "for" with embedded "if" statements. the for statement is a reference cell content, and the embedded if statement(s) compare the reference cells value (a game name) to that of the next column's values (game names in the next list), if the values (game names) are the same then their corresponding scores are added together and put into a third array for total scores.
it might be a pain in the butt to standardize each list, but it might be worth it. you could even use the DP online guide numbers as their names to make it easy. (this would have been a heck of alot easier if each individual had done this in the first place)
I don't remember my code very well, and what I have above probably doesn't make any sense whatsoever, but I know someone around here could write a code to add the scores up quickly.
anyway HURRY UP!

I had I think 7 PC games on my list. And I think SMB will be #1 as well, but we will see.
It was hard making a top 25 list, because I had to leave some of my favorites off the list. It would have been easier to make a top 50, but then I think I would have included some questionable games. Top 25 made you really make some tough choices, which is good.

That's sort of the way I feel about it as well. I'm sure that Baseball Stars is the best baseball game available on the NES, but It has seince been surpassed by newer generations of baseball games. I feel the same way about Tecmo Bowl. Now I love that game, but it didn't make my list because I don't feel as though it stands the test of time. The kinds of games that I put on my list are games that transcend the "Generational" nature of video gaming. It doesn't matter that Star Control 2 (to go back to that example) is old and therefore has extremely dated graphics and sound. Within it's little sub-genre, I don't feel as though it has ever been surpassed in terms of quality gameplay, etc. Now, if you feel that way about Baseball Stars, then by all means put it on your list. But if you give me the choice between playing baseball stars or whatever the top current-gen baseball game is, then I am going to take the latter.
So I don't think that there is an "irrational" hatred of Sports games here, but I think that people sometimes tend to pick whatever is newest because it is generally more robust. This of ocurse is not always the case though.

It's nothing like a current verison of any baseball game. New baseball games have NO character to them while Baseball Stars had plenty. It's not a realistic sports game it has cartoony grapics and music which is also part of the appeal for me. Seeing your player walk off into the sunset after you've fired him is part of the fun. You cut a player in MVP what happens? A line with his name on it disappears? I'm sure its much more accurate to the game of baseball but that's never why I put Baseball Stars on my list.
The way you earned money to build your team was a lot of fun. If you never spent hours doing this then I'm not sure I can really explain it.

Well, certainly then I have not spent enough time playing the game to fully appreciate it from what you are saying. I think the big turn off for me is that the acutal gameplay during the baseball games isn't all that great, due I'm sure to the limitations of the system.

Awesome to see support for this amazing game (which has definitely stood the test of time - I'm still playing it in 2006). I have never been a sports game fan, but that one is something else. If you loved baseball (I mean really loved it), that was the game to get if not only for the customization option (anybody remembers "What is a wren?" LOL ) but also the fantastic gameplay that has never been duplicated. All in all, this is certainly the game I spent the most time playing in my life. Sorry to come so late to the party, but I'm totally on the bandwagon with Tecmo Super Bowl and Baseball Stars. Both were in my top 10 (I'm thinking 5 and 8 respectively?). Sure, part of it is nostalgia, but I think a lot of it, like classicb says, it's all about the character.
MVP is fine for people who want to sit down and take an hour or so to play a game. Also, who seriously has time to play 162 games? It takes a full real-time baseball season to play through one. With Baseball Stars, you can sit down and play a game in 20 minutes tops, less if you invoke the "mercy rule".
It was essentially the first "dynasty mode". Hiring, firing, renaming your players, with a fair amount of stat tracking. I think the unique qualities such as choosing the strengths of your team upon creation aid it tremendously. I always chose "strong pitching" while my friend always took "fast runners" for some reason.
Tecmo Super Bowl holds many of the same qualities, first game with in-depth stats for all (then) 28 NFL teams. The fact that they rated as low as they did speaks to my undying love for the games ahead of it (Tetris was my 1st with Link to the Past and Super Metroid also very high up there).
With the rise of EA Sports games, they've really lost their character. Don't get me wrong, I love recruiting a dynasty in NCAA Football, but I haven't been able to touch any baseball game or Madden for years. In striving to be "realistic" it just loses the appeal. To each his own though, I'm still eager to see the list.

i realy like basebal stars - and the japanese nes soccer game thats kind of matches the feel of it -- i also hold sentimental value for NHL 93 on the genesis but becasue of the way i classify sports titles i dont include them on any favorites list -- id include them on a sentimentality list but on a games list? I dont know why i just cant see them as being the same.
I certainaly do understand other peoples views about it. At thier core they are and were intended as games. Its just me - i dont have the same view.

LOL combat ended up being 29th for me it was actualy in the 20s but as i was trying to weigh it with other titles it kept gettign lower and lower and probbaly would still fall -- mainly becasuse of trying to play it nowdays -- it isint as fun - especialy when player 2 is barely interested in playing against you. all my recent experiences with the game were downers. Also, i was trying to keep nostolgia out of my evaluation. Like i complained before about only being able to choose 25 titles - its one of those games i felt that needed to be on a list like this -- im glad someone put it on theirs. :) My formula didnt alow me to

There is a simple matter of tastes on any of these lists. I figure you would likely need a sampling of around 500 or so people to get a relatively unbiased listing of the greatest games, which of course is probably not that easy.

The hardest part is the waiting. I keep checking and checking and it keeps getting more and more pages but still no list. It's like standing in line waiting to use the restroom and you know who ever's in there is taking their sweet time reading some mag or picking their nose and you keep waiting and waiting and waiting. It's realy annoying this waiting bit. An estimated time of posting would greatly be apreciated because atleast then we would know to not bother checking untill then. Instead we just keep waiting and waiting and fighting over Baseball stars and suddenly I feel the urge to go to the bathroom. Thanks AB, now I've got to go to the restroom.
BTW, I hate waiting weeks. Yes, I know you are trying. Yes, I know it takes time. I still hate waiting though.

I also don't want to sound like a whiner, BUT i'm really looking forward to this list to see which games on it I haven't played and get them - and to see where my favorites fall on the list. It's hard to be patient.

Trust me Fuyukaze, Baseball Stars is placed....
...somewhere in the list ;)
It's still being edited together, there's a LOT of games to consider, over 800 different ones were voted on by people.

I think baseball stars even made my list. It's one of the few sports titles I enjoyed if only for the RPG elements. Beore it, I couldnt stand sports titles because of control issues and how it never felt like you were doing much more then playing an advanced form of pong. I hate most of the recent ones because while they have gained better control, they have also gained real teams, real players, and sadly just dont have the feel of stars. That probly isnt being fair to the current generation of baseball titles, or the ones which were released after it, but that's what I've come to feel about it.
I still wonder how many Koei or Atlus titles made anyone else' list. Also, how many RPGs in general or Racing games made it. There were a few I voted for in hindsight, I realy wish I could have changed around.

Good lord.
Both those teams are in serious need of prestige!

Tecmo Bowl >>> Baseball Stars
I'll agree with that since Tecmo Super Bowl was #1 on my list and Baseball Stars was #3
